Book Foreign Direct Liability and Beyond

Download or read book Foreign Direct Liability and Beyond written by Liesbeth F. H. Enneking and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western societies are witnessing an emerging socio-legal trend towards transnational civil litigation against multinational corporations in relation to harm caused toward people and the planet. These 'foreign direct liability cases' arise against the background of a global governance gap resulting from the rapid globalization of economic actors and activities with no global institutions to manage their worldwide impacts. The increasing reliance on private law mechanisms to realize corporate accountability for violations of human rights, health and safety, and environmental and labor norms perpetrated around the globe raises interesting and complex issues. This study sets out the legal and socio-political framework of this particular type of transnational civil litigation. The book traces the role that Western systems of tort law may play in promoting international corporate social responsibility/accountability. It focuses on the feasibility of bringing foreign direct liability claims before domestic courts in the EU Member States - the Netherlands in particular - and sets out a number of recommendations for European policymakers.

Book Nationalism Labour and Ethnicity 1870 1939

Download or read book Nationalism Labour and Ethnicity 1870 1939 written by Angel Smith and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text looks at the inter-relationships between labour, nationalist movements and ethnicity during the Age of Imperialism. Two of the most debated contemporary issues focus on the decline of labour, particularly socialist ideologies, and the rise of nationalism. It is sometimes assumed that the demise of one led to the triumph of the other. It is also thought that labour as an internationalist movement underestimated and misunderstood the power of nationalism. This text links these historical phenomena and sets the debate in more accurate historical context.

Book Dimensions of Possession

Download or read book Dimensions of Possession written by Irène Baron and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-12-04 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few linguistic concepts are more elusive than ‘possession’. The present collection of articles, selected from an international workshop held in Copenhagen in May 1998, confronts the subject from several angles (lexicon; the semantics of possession and the verb HAVE; the syntax of genitives and other possessive structures; the interaction of verbal and nominal constructions; the semantic and textual implications of the alienable/inalienable distinction, etc.) and approaches (formal semantics; functional semantics; and syntax as diachronic and typological comparisons). The languages covered include both European languages such as Danish, French, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin, and several American, Australian, African and Asian languages. This volume in which the contributing scholars have sought to examine as many 'dimensions' as possible is of interest to all linguists, in particular those working in the field of typology and functional approaches to language.

Book The Physical Nature of Consciousness

Download or read book The Physical Nature of Consciousness written by Philip R. Van Loocke and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physical Nature of Consciousness contains twelve chapters that discuss recent and new perspectives on the relation between modern physics and consciousness. Stuart Hameroff opens with an extended and updated exposition of the Penrose/Hameroff Orch-OR model, and subsequently addresses recent criticisms of quantum approaches to the brain. Evan Walker presents his view on consciousness from the perspective of a new approach to the integration of quantum theory and relativity. Friedrich Beck elaborates on the Beck/Eccles quantum approach to consciousness. Karl Pribram puts the holographic view on consciousness in perspective of his life long work. Peter Marcer and Edgar Mitchell explain the relevance of quantum holography for consciousness. Gordon Globus discusses the relation between postmodern philosophical theories and quantum consciousness. Chris Clarke develops a theory in terms of a specific type of formal logic to reconcile the phenomenology of consciousness with the physical world. Ilya Prigogine summarizes his view on complexity, and on the future of quantum theory, which goes beyond the present formalism, and goes on to comment on the problem of consciousness. Matti Pitkanen identifies the place for consciousness in a unifying topological geometro-dynamics theory. Colin McGinn argues against classical materialism. Dick Bierman gives an overview of anomalous phenomena. He identifies a decline effect, and discusses different possible interpretations. Philip Van Loocke closes the volume with a discussion on how deep teleology in cellular systems may relate to consciousness. (Series A)

Book Ancient Lines in the Landscape

Download or read book Ancient Lines in the Landscape written by Frank Vermeulen and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, archaeological research in north-west Europe has developed a keen interest in the total landscape that was inhabited and used by man in ancient times. The present study of palaeo-landscapes constitutes an important contribution to the reconstruction of the morphology of protohistoric and Roman landscapes. By means of combined geo-archaeological methods and computer technology researchers from Ghent University have tried to understand the structure of pre-medieval landscape of northwestern Gaul. Intensive use of remote sensing techniques and the application of a Geographic Information System, combined with more traditional fieldwork and analysis, open the way to a new approach of man's delineated environment during the early formation stage of the European landscape. Although the authors have tested this new approach only in a restricted region of the Roman Empire, it can easily be applied in most other parts of the Classical World. As such this well-illustrated book not only presents a detailed account of innovative investigations on early landscape structures in parts of modern France, Belgium and the Netherlands, it also procures a concise methodological contribution to early historical landscape research in general.

Book Labour and Labour Markets Between Town and Countryside Middle Ages 19th Century

Download or read book Labour and Labour Markets Between Town and Countryside Middle Ages 19th Century written by Bruno Blondé and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labour and labour markets in and between town and countryside have been puzzling to economic historians for generations. This book brings together specialists in economic and social history to explore a series of key mechanisms related to the organisation and interdependence of urban and rural labour markets. A variety of issues, such as distribution, specialisation, and division of tasks, economies of urbanisation and -(conversely) rural de-localisation, (temporary) mobility of labour and commercial links, organisation of working time, methods of remuneration, gendered specialisation of activities, are dealt with in this book from the viewpoint of (changing) relationships between rural and urban labour markets. The renewed interest of social scientists in this research field is reflected by the diversity of the cases analysed according to geographical, demographic, and economic and political conditions. This book, therefore, provides interesting opportunities for a comparative reading of the significance of labour in the organisation of societies in the course of the centuries that preceded and led up to the 'industrial age' in Western Europe.

Book Peasants Into Farmers

Download or read book Peasants Into Farmers written by P. C. M. Hoppenbrouwers and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since his first article in 1976 the American historian Robert P. Brenner has tried to come to terms with an issue first raised two centuries ago: how can we explain the differences in growth-patterns of North Western European countries in the transition from feudalism to capitalism. In a frontal attack on both the '(homeostatic) demographic' and 'commercialisation' models, Brenner traced the roots of the divergent evolutions back to rural and feudal 'social-property relations'. In the debate that immediately followed Brenner's first article, and in subsequent exchanges, the Low Countries were significantly neglected, although areas such as Flanders and Holland played a decisive role in the economic development of Europe. This was partly because of too few publications in international languages on the relevant Dutch rural history. This important book, edited by two of the most respected Dutch rural historians, and with contributions by several distinguished historians, seeks to fill this lacuna. It draws upon substantial research, and confronts the Brenner thesis with new results and hypotheses; and it contains a powerful and detailed response by Brenner himself.
