Book Status of the Weidemeyer s Admiral Limenitis Widemeyerii in Alberta

Download or read book Status of the Weidemeyer s Admiral Limenitis Widemeyerii in Alberta written by Norbert G. Kondla and published by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every five years, the Fish and Wildlife Division of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development reviews the general status of wildlife species in Alberta. The Alberta Wildlife Status Report is an extension of the general status exercise, and provides comprehensive current summaries of the biological status of selected wildlife in Alberta. The Weidemeyer's admiral is a butterfly that is limited in distribution within Canada to two groups of known populations along the lower Milk River of southern Alberta. The purpose of this report is to compile and summarize available information on the Weidemeyer's admiral in Alberta, with emphasis on information pertinent to determining its status from a conservation perspective.

Book Weidemeyer s Admiral Conservation Management Plan 2012 2017

Download or read book Weidemeyer s Admiral Conservation Management Plan 2012 2017 written by Doug Macaulay and published by . This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Weidemeyer's admiral (Limenitis weidemeyerii oberfoelli Brown) is a Species of Special Concern in Alberta because its breeding range is limited and it is found only in the Milk River basin of southern Alberta. Its range is restricted by the extent of shrubby riparian habitat it requires, and even in suitable habitat it is relatively uncommon. Current status of populations is unknown and little is known about trends in population. These butterflies spend their lives feeding, courting and breeding in these areas and rarely wander outside of their range. This plan recommends various ways to conserve Weidemeyer's admiral populations and habitat, including monitoring techniques and ways to avoid the degradation of their shrubby riparian habitats."--Document.

Book Annotated List of the Lepidoptera of Alberta Canada

Download or read book Annotated List of the Lepidoptera of Alberta Canada written by Greg Pohl and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2010-03-05 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This checklist of the Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) of Alberta lists 2367 species reported to occur in the province, as well as 138 species whose occurrence in Alberta is probable. Each species entry includes adult flight time and distribution status in the Cordilleran, Boreal, and Grasslands ecozones, as well as references to taxonomic works and to the literature and public collection sources of the records. Detailed notes on taxonomy, nomenclature, distribution, habitat, and biology are given for 1524 of the listed species. An additional section provides details on 171 species erroneously reported from Alberta in previous works. The authors hope it will be a useful resource for anyone carrying out species-level work on Lepidoptera in western Canada, or taxonomic work on Lepidoptera in general. An introductory section provides a general overview of the order Lepidoptera and the natural regions of Alberta, and the history and current state of knowledge of Alberta Lepidoptera. Each of the 63 families (and selected subfamilies) occurring in Alberta is briefly reviewed, with information on distinguishing features, general appearance, and general biology. The list is accompanied by an appendix of proposed nomenclature changes, consisting of revised status for 25 taxa raised from synonymy to species level, and new synonymy for 20 species-level and one genus-level taxa here considered to be subjective synonyms, with resultant revised synonymy for one taxon and formalization of seven new combinations.

Book Courtship and Mating in Butterflies

Download or read book Courtship and Mating in Butterflies written by Raymond J.C. Cannon and published by CABI. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present a readable account of butterfly behaviour, based on field observations, great photographs and the latest research. The main focus is on courtship and mating – including perching, searching and territorial behaviour – but to understand these subjects it is necessary to explain how mates are chosen and this requires sections on wing colours and patterns. A chapter on butterfly vision is also essential in terms of how butterflies see the world and each other. There have been exciting discoveries in all of these fields in recent years, including: butterfly vision (butterfly photoreceptors), wing patterns (molecular biology), wing colouration (structural colours and nano-architecture), mating strategies and female choice (ecology and behaviour).

Book Florissant Butterflies

  • Author : Thomas C. Emmel

  • ISBN : 9780804720182
  • Pages : 154 pages

Download or read book Florissant Butterflies written by Thomas C. Emmel and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a well-illustrated treatment of and guide to all the fossil and present-day species of butterflies in one of the richest areas in North America for butterfly diversity and study. For much of the year, the meadows, forests, and grassy slopes of the Florissant region of central Colorado are alive with butterflies - nearly 100 species of these fascinating and beautiful creatures. Many of them have unusual life histories: the larvae (caterpillars) of one species take two years to mature; others develop close associations with ants; and the adults of some species live only a few days, whereas others survive for months in winter hibernation. Central Colorado is also the site of the florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, which has yielded 12 of the 44 known species of butterfly fossils in the world. To find fossils of these delicate-winged creatures in such a perfect state of preservation is one of the wonders of nature, since the fossils have endured 35 million years of geologic activity, erosion, and climate change. Remarkably, most of the fossil species are closely related to various present-day species.

Book Finding Butterflies in Arizona

Download or read book Finding Butterflies in Arizona written by Richard Allen Bailowitz and published by Big Earth Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its 334 species of butterflies and rich diversity of habitats, Arizona provides amazing opportunities to watch butterflies all year round. With lands as varied as the high peaks near Flagstaff and the low desert near Yuma, it's difficult to know where to go for the best butterfly watching. Arizona's extreme range of climate also makes it difficult to plan a trip to coincide with the short flight times of many species. All these factors make this book essential-it approaches finding butterflies by species, by region, and by season. Want to know where and when to find an Ares Metalmark? This book will tell you. Want to know where to find butterflies near Tucson? All the best spots are described for you. Going to be in Arizona in June? With this book you'll know where to go. Finding Butterflies in Arizona, the second in a series of Spring Creek Press state guides, is an indispensable book for all butterfly enthusiasts living in or traveling to this butterfly-rich state. It's the next best thing to having a local guide. Book jacket.
