Book Heavy Water and the Wartime Race for Nuclear Energy

Download or read book Heavy Water and the Wartime Race for Nuclear Energy written by Per F Dahl and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy water (deuterium oxide) played a sinister role in the race for nuclear energy during the World War II. It was a key factor in Germany's bid to harness atomic energy primarily as a source of electric power; its acute shortage was a factor in Japan's decision not to pursue seriously nuclear weaponry; its very existence was a nagging thorn in the side of the Allied powers. Books and films have dwelt on the Allies' efforts to deny the Germans heavy water by military means; however, a history of heavy water has yet to be written. Filling this gap, Heavy Water and the Wartime Race for Nuclear Energy concentrates on the circumstances whereby Norway became the preeminent producer of heavy water and on the scientific role the rare isotope of hydrogen played in the wartime efforts by the Axis and Allied powers alike. Instead of a purely technical treatise on heavy water, the book describes the social history of the subject. The book covers the discovery and early uses of deuterium before World War II and its large-scale production by Norsk Hydro in Norway, especially under German control. It also discusses the French-German race for the Norwegian heavy-water stocks in 1940 and heavy water's importance for the subsequent German uranium project, including the Allied sabotage and bombing of the Norwegian plants, as well as its lesser role in Allied projects, especially in the United States and Canada. The book concludes with an overall assessment of the importance and the perceived importance of heavy water for the German program, which alone staked everything on heavy water in its quest for a nuclear chain reaction.

Book Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology

Download or read book Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology written by Ernest J. Henley and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology, Volume 2 provides an authoritative, complete, coherent, and critical review of the nuclear industry. This book discusses the advances in the atomic energy field. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the concept of transfer function of a system. This text then examines the classic plant cycles for the water-cooled, liquid metal, and gas-cooled reactor concepts to pinpoint those points in cycle that require nuclear grade heat exchanger equipment. Other chapters consider heat exchanger, which is applied to the full spectrum of apparatus and equipment designed to facilitate the flow of heat from medium to medium. This book discusses as well the hardware characteristics and the resulting effects on reactor calculations. The final chapter deals with the effect of digital computers on nuclear reactor calculations and discusses some of the numerical methods used in nuclear reactor codes. This book is a valuable resource for design engineers and plant operating personnel.

Book Nuclear Science Abstracts

Download or read book Nuclear Science Abstracts written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 1462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.

Book Analytical and Experimental Investigations of the Behavior of Thermal Neutrons in Lattices of Uranium Metal Rods in Heavy Water

Download or read book Analytical and Experimental Investigations of the Behavior of Thermal Neutrons in Lattices of Uranium Metal Rods in Heavy Water written by R. Simms and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the intracellular distribution of the activation of foils by neutrons were made in lattices of 1/4-inch diameter, 1.03% U-235, uranium rods moderated by heavy water, with bare and cadmium-covered foils of gold, depleted uranium, lutetium, europium and copper. The measurements were made in the M.I.T. Heavy Water Lattice Facility with source neutrons from the M.I.T. Reactor. Two lattices were studied in detail in this work. The more closely packed lattice had a triangular spacing of 1.25 inches, and the less closely packed lattice had a triangular spacing of 2.5 inches. The results of the experiments were compared to one-dimensional, 30-energy group, THERMOS calculations based on the available energy exchange kernels. The comparison indicated that the approximation that the hexagonal cell may be replaced by an equivalent circular cell (the Wigner-Seitz approximation) can lead to serious discrepancies in closely packed lattices moderated by heavy water. A modified one-dimensional, and a two-dimensional, calculation were shown to predict the intracellular activation distribution in the closely packed lattice. An analytical treatment of the problem of the flux perturbation in a foil was developed and compared to the experimental results obtained by using gold foils of four different thicknesses in the lattice cell; the method was shown to be adequate. An analytical method to treat the effect of leakage from an exponential assembly was formulated; the results indicated that only in small exponential assemblies would leakage be a significant problem in intracellular flux measurements. A method was developed to predict the cadmium ratio of the foils used in the lattice cell; comparison with available measurements with gold foils indicated good agreement between theory and experiment, except for a lattice having very large ratios of moderator volume, to fuel volume, e.g., 100:1. Calculations of the fuel disadvantage factor by the method of successive generations for gold, lutetium and europium detector foils were compared to the results of THERMOS calculations, because THERMOS was shown to predict the experimental distributions. The comparison indicated that the method of successive generations is a good alternative to the THERMOS calculation, if all that is required is 17 and the thermal utilization.
