Book PEP II Status and Outlook

Download or read book PEP II Status and Outlook written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PEP-II/BABAR are presently in their second physics run. With machine and detector performance and reliability at an all-time high, almost 51 fb−1 have been integrated by BABAR up to mid-October 2001. PEP-II luminosity has reached 4.4 x 1033 cm−2 s−1 and our highest monthly delivered luminosity has been above 6 pb−1, exceeding the performance parameters given in the PEP-II CDR by almost 50%. The increase compared to the first run in 2000 has been achieved by a combination of beam-current increase and beam-size decrease. In this paper we will summarize the PEP-II performance and the present limitations as well as our plans to further increase machine performance.

Book Status Report and Future Plans for the PEP II B Factory

Download or read book Status Report and Future Plans for the PEP II B Factory written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The PEP-II B Factory at SLAC has been in operation with the BABAR detector since the summer of 1999. The peak currents and luminosity steadily increased through the end of the 2000 run on October 31. By that time, 0.75 A of electrons (the design current) routinely collided with 1.4 A of positrons in 657 bunches, to give a peak luminosity of 2.6 x 10[sup 33] cm[sup -2] s[sup -1]. We delivered an integrated luminosity of up to 184 pb[sup -1] per day and 1033 per week; BABAR logged a total of 25 fb[sup -1]. Three days of machine development at the end of the run raised the peak luminosity to 3.29 x 10[sup 33], exceeding the design goal of 3.0. BABAR then logged data for an hour, starting with a peak of 3.20. Next, we achieved the design value for positron current, 2.14 A, operating without collisions. The major limitation has been growth in the size of the positron beam in the low-energy ring (LER) due to electron clouds and multipacting. Since the arcs benefit from antechambers and a TiN coating with low secondary emission, our efforts have concentrated on the straights, where we added solenoid windings. Each straight wound allowed higher LER current without blow-up, and a consequent increase in luminosity. Measurements of the bunch-by-bunch luminosity showed that the effect becomes significant by about the tenth bunch in a train, but clears after a short gap. Careful control of the fill pattern has thus been essential in raising luminosity. For the 2001 run, which began in February, we added a third LER RF station, to collide with more LER current and more bunches, and also tried reducing[beta]*[sub x] from 50 to 35 cm, with the goal of reaching a luminosity of 5 x 10[sup 33] by year's end. In 2003, we plan to add a fourth LER and sixth HER RF station to reach 1 x 10[sup 34].

Book excerpt: PEP-II and BaBar have just finished run 7, the last run of the SLAC B-factory. PEP-II was one of the few high-current e+e- colliding accelerators and holds the present world record for stored electrons and stored positrons. It has stored 2.07 A of electrons, nearly 3 times the design current of 0.75 A and it has stored 3.21 A of positrons, 1.5 times more than the design current of 2.14 A. High-current beams require careful design of several systems. The feedback systems that control instabilities, the RF system stability loops, and especially the vacuum systems have to handle the higher power demands. We present here some of the accomplishments of the PEP-II accelerator and some of the problems we encountered while running high-current beams.

Book PEP II Status and Future Plans

Download or read book PEP II Status and Future Plans written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The PEP-II B-Factory at SLAC has reached a luminosity of 4.6 x 1033/cm2/s and has delivered 94 fb−1 of data to the BaBar physics detector by the end of May 2002. PEP-II has delivered over 309 pb−1 in 24 hours and over 6.35 fb−1 in one month. The accelerator physics issues for these performance levels include electron cloud, beam-beam effects, parasitic beam-beam collisions, and RF beam loading. Upgrades to PEP-II are underway to increase the luminosity to 2 to 4 x 1034/cm2/s by FY2007. The accelerator physics effects that must be dealt with during these upgrades include RF loading, multi-bunch feedback, IR beta function, bunch length reduction, and interaction region vacuum chamber upgrades.

Book Status and Future Plans of the PEP II B Factory

Download or read book Status and Future Plans of the PEP II B Factory written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The PEP-II e+e- collider [1,2,3,4] has been operating for two years with the BaBar detector at the energy of the Upsilon 4S resonance. The peak luminosity has reached 3.3 x 1033/cm2/s with 693 bunches with a positron current of 1.5 A and an electron current of 0.8 A. PEP-II has delivered in excess of 38 fb−1 of data to BaBar. The beam-beam tune shift limits are approaching 0.05-0.07 horizontally and 0.03-0.05 vertically [5]. The electron cloud instability ECI enlarges the positron beam size at high currents but is reduced by a solenoidal field on the vacuum chambers [6]. The beam currents in PEP-II are being raised to increase the number of bunches and the luminosity. Over the next few years the luminosity goal for PEP-II is 1034/cm2/s.

Book B Physics Cp Violation 99 3rd Intl Conf

Download or read book B Physics Cp Violation 99 3rd Intl Conf written by Wei Shu Hou and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-12-29 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CP violation was first observed in 1964, but only in 1999 did we gain much greater experimental insight. Direct CP violation finally appeared in the form of ε′/ε in the K system. Indirect CP violation in B → J/Ψ Ks decay, the raison d'être for construction of e+e- B factories, was first sniffed out at the proton-antiproton collider. The asymmetric B factories — BABAR at SLAC and BELLE at KEK — were completed, while the symmetric B factory at Cornell was upgraded to CLEO-III. It seems that everyone is positioning himself for the great competition on “B Physics and CP Violation”, racing to unravel the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, especially the size and origin of CP phases. The change of millennium provides a dramatic backdrop. To have intensive discussions at the technical level, to create broader interest in the subject, and to maximize interaction between experimenters and theorists, this book starts with the status of B factories: accelerator, detector and physics analysis. Following an overview of B physics and the CKM matrix, it delves into the details of lifetime, spectroscopy and decays, with even more specialized discussions on rare decays, direct and indirect CP violation, factorization and final state interactions, determination of unitarity phases, etc. Topics on ε′/ε, rare K decay, charm and hyperon systems, and various T, CP and CPT tests are also discussed at length. The book closes with the outlook for hadron machines and the prospects for new physics. A special feature is that there are two summary talks, one on experiment and the other on theory. The book is further augmented by two dozen excellent contributed talks.
