Book A Web of Our Own Making

Download or read book A Web of Our Own Making written by Antón Barba-Kay and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-11 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There no longer seems any point to criticizing the internet. We indulge in the latest doom-mongering about the evils of social media-on social media. We scroll through routine complaints about the deterioration of our attention spans. We resign ourselves to hating the internet even as we spend much of our waking lives with it. Yet our unthinking surrender to its effects-to the ways it recasts our aims and desires-is itself digital technology's most powerful achievement. A Web of Our Own Making examines how online practices are reshaping our lives outside our notice. Barba-Kay argues that digital technology is a 'natural technology'-a technology so intuitive as to conceal the extent to which it transforms our attention. He shows how and why this technology is reconfiguring knowledge, culture, politics, aesthetics, and theology. The digital revolution is primarily taking place not in Silicon Valley but within each of us.

Book Equity in Data

  • Author : Andrew Knips
  • Publisher : ASCD

Download or read book Equity in Data written by Andrew Knips and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building a better data culture can be the path to better results and greater equity in schools. But what do we mean by data? Your students are not just statistics. They aren't simply a set of numbers or faceless dots on a proficiency scale. They are vibrant collections of experiences, thoughts, perspectives, emotions, wants, and dreams. And taken collectively, all of that information is data—and should be valued as such. Equity in Data not only unpacks the problematic nature of current approaches to data but also helps educators demystify and democratize data. It shows how we can bake equity into our data work and illuminate the disparities, stories, and truths that make our schools safer and stronger—and that help our students grow and thrive. To this end, the authors introduce a four-part framework for how to create an equitable data culture (along with a complementary set of data principles). They demonstrate how we can rethink our approach to data in the interest of equity by making five shifts: * Expand our understanding of data. * Strengthen our knowledge of data principles. * Break through our fear of data. * Decolonize our data gathering processes. * Turn data into meaningful, equitable action. We have an opportunity to realign school data with what students want out of their educational experiences. When we put equity first, we put students first.

Book Planning to Play in Tune for Flute

Download or read book Planning to Play in Tune for Flute written by Kathy Blocki and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with flexibility exercises and begins with having the ability to easily bend pitches. Planning to Play in Tune offers a variety of exercises that will not only develop this flexibility, but also greatly improve core tone quality. The "Full Spectrum Tone" exercises use the concepts of polyphonic singing and apply them to flute. The Just Tuning System is explained in the second section of the book. Learning to hear difference tones is a key element of playing with excellent intonation in an ensemble. It begins with exercises that help to zero in on these quiet tones and progress to using the difference tone as a reference for being in tune. A variety of methods of training ensembles is given in the third section. I use these faithfully for warming up flute ensembles and find them to be highly effective.Of course, one the most difficult aspects of playing in tune involves the use of dynamics. An entire section of the book is dedicated to progressively mastering the art of playing in tune when tackling extreme dynamics changes. The final section applies all the concepts to the famous flute solo in Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé. The harmony is discussed so that flutists are well-informed of how to listen and adjust pitch while playing with the orchestra.

Book Popped

  • Author : Carol Higgins Clark
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster

  • ISBN : 0743260961
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Popped written by Carol Higgins Clark and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003-09-23 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's up, up, and away with sleuth Regan Reilly -- in a lively new caper from beloved New York Times bestselling author Carol Higgins Clark. L.A.-based private detective Regan Reilly flies to Las Vegas -- the mythic city of cash and flash, glamour and kitsch -- to help an old school chum, Danny Madley. Danny is producing the pilot of a reality TV show, Love Above Sea Level. The show features three couples who all have experienced the proverbial Seven Year Itch and are now vying for the chance to renew their wedding vows and win one million dollars. But someone is trying to sabotage the show before Danny can shoot the final scene at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Danny's show is in competition with the sitcom Take Me Higher for a coveted permanent slot on Hot Air Cable, also known as the Balloon Channel. Both shows involve hot air ballooning, and both have casts of characters who are more than capable of disrupting production of Love Above Sea Level. Regan's job is to find out who is making trouble and why. Is the culprit one of the contestants on Love Above Sea Level? Could it be the advice columnists Danny has hired -- Aunt Agony and Uncle Heartburn -- who are there to help rekindle the sparks between the husbands and wives? Is it Danny's right-hand man, Victor, a local Vegas boy Danny met while gambling? Or his cameraman Sam, who would much rather be surfing than working? Is it Bubbles Ferndale, producer of the sitcom, who is desperate to make her show the one that wins the competition? Is it Danny's ex-girlfriend, the Vegas showgirl Honey? Or her friend Lucille, a dealer in one of the casinos? Could local entrepreneur Roscoe Parker, the owner of the Balloon Channel and mastermind behind the TV competitions, be the source of all Danny's problems? There is no shortage of suspects and no shortage of mishaps. From their base in the Fuzzy Dice Hotel, a decidedly third-rate establishment, Regan tries to help Danny keep his production on an even keel. Danny's well-meaning, meddlesome parents complicate matters. Jealousy among the Love Above Sea Level contestants escalates. Mysterious, inexplicable events keep occurring. Regan is determined to keep Danny's show on schedule, and she'll do whatever it takes -- on land and in the air! Popped is a funny, fast-paced jaunt that takes readers from the fancy Vegas casinos to the run-down hotels off the Strip, from the grounds of the hot air balloon fields up into the heavens as the balloons fly over the arid Southwest. Popped is written with Clark's expert light touch and filled with the richly drawn, quirky characters so relished by her fans. As Nelson DeMille says, "Clark keeps her readers entranced and entertained from cover to cover."

Book Prayers God Always Answers

Download or read book Prayers God Always Answers written by Nancy Kennedy and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have a secret prayer," confesses humorist Nancy Kennedy. "Every night before I go to sleep, I pray that I will wake up with a body like Cindy Crawford's...that the pile of Hershey kisses I ate won't go directly to my thighs...that one day someone will push a refrigerator-size check in my face and say, 'You've just won 11 million dollars!'" But Kennedy has also prayed for "nobler" things - like patience, strength, and a deeper trust in God. But, as she's found, prayers are not always answered in the way one expects. Like many others, she has wondered: "Why do I sometimes get immediate answers to my prayers, completely unexpected answers to others, and occasionally no answer at all? What can I legitimately pray for, according to the Bible? Will God respond to my prayers if I lack faith that He'll answer? Does God even need my prayers, since He must know what He wants to do already? With lighthearted humor and godly wisdom, Nancy Kennedy explores readers' most burning questions about prayer, solving a great deal of the mystery through an examination of those wonderful prayers God always answers: ones that lovingly conform us to the image of Christ.
