Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the fundamental statistical theory of atomic transport in crystalline solids, that is the means by which processes occurring at the atomic level are related to macroscopic transport coefficients and other observable quantities. The cornerstones of the authors' treatment are (i) the physical concepts of lattice defects, (ii) the phenomenological description provided by non-equilibrium thermodynamics and (iii) the various methods of statistical mechanics used to link these (kinetic theory, random-walk theory, linear response theory etc.). The book is primarily concerned with transport in the body of crystal lattices and not with transport on surfaces, within grain boundaries or along dislocations, although much of the theory here presented can be applied to these low-dimensional structures when they are atomically well ordered and regular.

Book XXIVth International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry

Download or read book XXIVth International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: XXIVth International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Volume 3 contains lectures presented at the XXIVth International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry held at Hamburg, Federal Republic of Germany in September 1973. The book consists of papers discussing a wide range of subjects on pure and applied chemistry. The compendium has papers that deal with advances in solid-state chemistry, atomic and ionic transport in ionic crystals, and the thermodynamics and preparation of non-stoichiometric, nonmetallic compounds. The text also presents papers covering topics on the formation synthesis and some properties of phosphate compounds, the application of valence electron concentration in crystal chemistry, and Crystal chemistry and magnetic properties of 3d transition metal fluorides. Chemists will find the book very interesting.

Book Flow Processes in Faults and Shear Zones

Download or read book Flow Processes in Faults and Shear Zones written by G. Ian Alsop and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2004 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faults and their deeper level equivalents, shear zones, are localized regions of intense deformation within the Earth. They are recognized at all scales from micro to plate boundary, and are important examples of the nature of heterogeneous deformation in natural rocks. Faults and shear zones are significant as they profoundly influence the location, architecture and evolution of a broad range of geological phenomenao The topography and bathymetry of the Earth's surface is marked by mountain belts and sedimentary basins that are controlled by faults and shear zoneso In addition, faults and shear zones control fluid migration and transport including hydrothermal and hydrocarbon systems. Once faults and shear zones are established, they are often long-lived features prone to multiple reactivation over very large time-scales. This collection of papers addresses lithospheric deformation and the rheology of shear zones, together with processes of partitioning and the unravelling of fault and shear zone histories.

Download or read book Mass Transport in Solids written by F. Bénière and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic transport in solids is a field of growing importance in solid state physics and chemistry, and one which, moreover, has important implications in several areas of materials science. This growth is due first to an increase in the understanding of the fund amentals of transport processes in solids. Of equal importance, however, have been the improvements in the last decade in the experi mental techniques available for the investigation of transport phenomena. The advances in technique have stimulated studies of a wider range of materials; and expansion of the field has been strong ly encouraged by the increasing range of applied areas where transport processes play an essential role. For example, mass transport phenomena play a critical role in the technology of fabrication of components in the electronics industry. Transport processes are involved both during the fabrication and operation of devices and with the growing trend to miniaturisation there are increasing demands on accurate control of diffusion processes. The present book (which is based on a NATO sponsored Advanced Study Institute held in 1981 at Lannion, France) aims to present a general survey of the subject, highlighting those areas where work has been especially active in recent years.
