Book Statistical Account of Upper Canada

Download or read book Statistical Account of Upper Canada written by and published by . This book was released on 1822 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author examines the differences in politics, policy, and culture in leading Western democracies and offers an explanation as to why lesbian and gay citizens in Europe reap more benefits of equality. This analysis of the political economy of care calls attention to the ways in which care is negotiated by various investors (the state, families, individuals, and the faith-based voluntary sector) and the power dynamics of this negotiation. historically, Christian churches have been leading primary investors in care, providing a direct safety net for children and the elderly. Despite European secularization, the involvement of the Christian church elites in both the provision of service and the setting of the values frame for welfare cannot be underestimated. The historical involvement of Christian churches is unique in each country, but one common factor is the normative interpretation of "the family." The role of Christian values-from left-leaning social justice, Reformed Protestant individualism, or social conservatism-in relation to the political economy of care gives a distinctive flavor to questions about under what circumstances policymakers are compelled, or not, to expand policies to include lesbian and gay citizens.

Book Emigrant Worlds and Transatlantic Communities

Download or read book Emigrant Worlds and Transatlantic Communities written by Elizabeth Jane Errington and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2007 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1831, Mrs McIndoe and her children left Scotland to join her husband, William, a labourer on the Rideau Canal. When they arrived they discovered that William had already moved on, forcing Mrs McIndoe to appeal to the public to help reunite her family. As Elizabeth Jane Errington illustrates, the nineteenth-century world of emigration was hazardous. Emigrant Worlds and Transatlantic Communities gives voice to the Irish, Scottish, English, and Welsh women and men who negotiated the complex and often dangerous world of emigration between 1815 and 1845. Using "information wanted" notices that appeared in colonial newspapers as well as emigrants' own accounts, Errington illustrates that emigration was a family affair. Individuals made their decisions within a matrix of kin and community - their experiences shaped by their identities as husbands and wives, parents and children, siblings and cousins. The Atlantic crossing divided families, but it was also the means of reuniting kin and rebuilding old communities. Emigration created its own unique world - a world whose inhabitants remained well aware of the transatlantic community that provided them with a continuing sense of identity, home, and family.

Book The Canada Company and the Huron Tract 1826 1853

Download or read book The Canada Company and the Huron Tract 1826 1853 written by Robert C. Lee and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2004-08-20 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canada Company, with its base in England, was responsible for settling over two million acres of land in Upper Canada. Author Robert C. Lee focuses on the Huron Tract and on the dominant personalities (many of them Scottish-born) ranging from John Galt and Tiger Dunlop to the bishops Macdonell and Strachan, who had an impact on the company's operations. The politics of the day, coupled with the diversity of the players, create an astounding blend of vision, intrigue and mischief as a backdrop to the bottom-line profit aspirations of the company's shareholders. The founding of towns - Guelph, Goderich, Stratford, St. Marys and others in the area - is one of the legacies of the company. Lee's extensive research reveals a significant period in Ontario's history.
