Book excerpt: Excerpt from Statistical Report of the United States Deciduous Fruit Export Season, 1938-39 Exports of boxed apples amounted to boxes, or about boxes more than those during 1937-38. This movement was slightly above the average of boxes exported in the 5-year period 1931-32 to 1935-36. The United Kingdom accounted for boxes or around 36 per cent of the total. Exports to France, the second most important market for boxed apples, amounted to boxes, or about 18 percent of the total. European countries as a whole took over 85 percent of the boxed exports. Or 5 percent more than they took during the 1937-38 season. The largest increases in shipments during 1938-39 were to the United Kingdom, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, and Norway, while exports to Germany, Canada, Egypt, and the Netherlands were below those of the previous year. Boxed apples averaged around a box for the season, or 8 cents a box more than the average for the previous season. Boxed shipments were equiv alent to around 17 percent of the total production and an percent of the commercial production in the four Western box States. In this connection, however, allowance must be made for the increasing use of the box-crate pack in the Eastern States. Exports of Eastern-grown apples in box-crates showed a substantial increase during the 1938-39 season. No separate statistics on the volume of Eastern box-crate apple exports, however, are available. Book excerpt: Citrus greening, a disease that reduces yield, compromises the flavor, color, and size of citrus fruit and eventually kills the citrus tree, is now present in all 34 Floridian citrus-producing counties. Caused by an insect-spread bacterial infection, the disease reduced citrus production in 2008 by several percent and continues to spread, threatening the existence of Florida's $9.3 billion citrus industry. A successful citrus greening response will focus on earlier detection of diseased trees, so that these sources of new infections can be removed more quickly, and on new methods to control the insects that carry the bacteria. In the longerterm, technologies such as genomics could be used to develop new citrus strains that are resistant to both the bacteria and the insect.

A healthy soil needs animal inputs. Animals in agriculture are central; they're right in there with fungi. This message is not welcomed by those who would feed the modern world a diet of plant-based, lab-grown food substitutes that have lists of ingredients as long as your arm, and are going to save the planet using gene-spliced soybeans and 3D printed pizzas. So, the cow and her calf are on the cover to redress the balance, and also to feature as one of the stars of this book (along with sugar cane, waste pits, and public servants). She was the photogenic one. Albert Howard's text has been thoroughly re-edited in this new version of his book. The habit, common at the time, of using long paragraphs is not preferred by modern readers, so the text has been extensively 'reparagraphed'. Grammar has been tweaked, and styles have been adopted. Headings have been added, infinitives unsplit. The changes made have been to make things more comfortable for modern eyes and tastes. The sense and intention of the author has not been altered at all, of course. We hope that Albert Howard would approve of this reworking of his book. His ideas are more important than ever. Wendell Berry wrote in The Last Whole Earth Catalog "Howard's discoveries and methods, and their implications, are given in detail in An Agricultural Testament. They are of enormous usefulness to gardeners and farmers, and to anyone who may be interested in the history and the problems of land use. But aside from its practical worth, Howard's book is valuable for his ability to place his facts and insights within the perspective of history. This book is a critique of civilisations, judging them not by their artefacts and victories, but by their response to the sacred duty of handing over to the next generation, unimpaired, the heritage of a fertile soil."
