Download or read book Sri Lankan Society in an Era of Globalization written by S. H. Hasbullah and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2004-08-30 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of social, economic and political crisis in Sri Lanka today, this volume investigates the possibilities of building a new, Sri Lankan, model of organizing society. The book is divided into four parts. Part One looks at societal reorganization. Part Two focuses on the rift generated by ethnicity, while the third part draws lessons from the struggle of NGOs and other groups to build a better society in Sri Lanka. Finally, Part Four highlights the larger problems faced by the state. Linking the changes in individual and family experiences to political, economic and societal changes, the book calls for the need for non-violent, participatory and collective action frameworks to address the problems in this troubled society.

Download or read book Blowback written by Neil DeVotta and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1950s, Sri Lanka’s majority Sinhalese politicians began outbidding one another on who could provide the greatest advantages for their community, using the Sinhala language as their instrument. The appeal to Sinhalese linguistic nationalism precipitated a situation in which the movement to replace English as the country’s official language with Sinhala and Tamil (the language of Sri Lanka’s principal minority) was abandoned and Sinhala alone became the official language in 1956. The Tamils’ subsequent protests led to anti-Tamil riots and institutional decay, which meant that supposedly representative agencies of government catered to Sinhalese preferences and blatantly disregarded minority interests. This in turn led to the Tamils’ mobilizing, first politically then militarily, and by the mid-1970s Tamil youth were bent on creating a separate state.

Download or read book Investing in Maternal Health written by Indra Pathmanathan and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides the most comprehensive and detailed analysis available on factors behind the decline in maternal mortality in Malaysia and Sri Lanka in the past 50 to 60 years and the magnitude of health system expenditures on maternal health. The main findings are that a modest investment in maternal health services, combined with other poverty reduction measures leads to a fairly rapid decline in the maternal mortality ratio (MMR), defined as the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. The strategies of Malaysia and Sri Lanka changed over time, from an initial emphasis on expanding the provision of services, especially in underserved areas, to increasing utilization and, finally, to emphasizing the improvement of quality. Removing financial barriers to maternal care for clients was an important step in both countries. Professional midwives constitute the backbone of maternal care in Malaysia and Sri Lanka. The MMR reduction in developing countries is feasible with modest public expenditures when appropriate policies are adopted, focused wisely, and adapted incrementally in response to environmental conditions and systems capacity.
