This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in advanced ceramics are critically evaluated in respect to their thermal shock and thermal fatigue behavior from an interdisciplinary viewpoint by leading experts. The book covers the aspects of material development, mechanical and fracture mechanical models and experimental testing methods. Special emphasis is given to the influence of a rising crack resistance on the thermal shock behavior, novel irradiation testing methods for a quantitative characterization of the thermal shock and fatigue loading as well as detailed fracture mechanical models for single and multiple crack propagation. This book summarizes developments of the last decade concerning the thermal shock and thermal fatigue behavior of advanced ceramics. The scientific articles of the book were carefully arranged in order to achieve a textbook-like form which will be of great value to researchers and students. Book Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics written by R. C. Bradt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes, 7 and 8, of Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics constitute the proceedings of an international symposium on the fracture mechanics of ceramic materials held at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia on June 19, 20 and 21, 1985. These proceedings constitute the fourth pair of volumes of a continuing series of conferences. The theme of this conference, as the previous three, focused on the mechanical behavior of ceramic materials in terms of the characteristics of cracks, particularly the roles which they assume in the fracture process. The 78 contributed papers by over 100 authors and co-authors represent the current state of the field. They address many of the theoretical and practical problems of interest to those concerned with brittle fracture. The program chairmen gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance for the Symposium provided by the EXXON Foundation, the Army Research Office, the Natio~al Science Foundation, and the Office of Naval Research. Without their support, this conference simply would not have been possible. The suggestions of Drs. J. C. Hurt, R. C. Pohanka, and L. Toth were particularly helpful in assuring the success of this symposium. Special appreciation is extended to Professor J. I. Robertson, C. P. Miles Professor of History. whose presentation following the banquet on the American Civil War was very well received by the audience. Finally, we wish to also thank our joint secretaries, especially Karen Snider, for their patience and help in finally bringing these proceedings to press.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Thermal Stresses in ~~terials and Structures in Severe Thermal Environments constitutes the proceedings of an international conference held at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA, on ~1arch 19, 20 and 21, 1980. The purpose of the conference was to bring together experts in the areas of heat transfer, theoretical and applied mechanics amd materials science and engineering, with a.common interest in the highly interdisciplinary nature of the thermal stress problem. It is the hope of the program chairmen that the resulting interac tion has led to a greater understanding of the underlying prin ciples of the thermal stress problem and to an improved design and selection of materials for structures subjected to high thermal stresses. The program chairmen gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance for the conference provided by the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, the Army Research Office and the Office of Naval Research as well as the Departments of Engineering Science and Mechanics and Materials Engineering at Virginia Poly technic Institute and State University. A number of professional societies also provided mailing lists for the program at no nominal cost The Associate Director, Mr. R. J. Harshberger and his staff at the Conference Center for Continuing Education at VPI and SU should be recognized especially for their coordination of the con ference activities, lunches and banquet. Provost John D. Wilson gave a most enlightening and provocative after-dinner speech.

Book Effect of Shape and Material on the Thermal Rupture of Ceramics

Download or read book Effect of Shape and Material on the Thermal Rupture of Ceramics written by and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the first phase of an investigation of the effect of shape and material on the thermal rupture of ceramics. It deals primarily with thermal rupture caused by steady- state radial heat flow through a circular tube. One objective of this research is to ascertain under what conditions the heat flow per unit length causing failure, Qmax, can be written as the product of two factors: M, characterizing the material, and S, characterizing the shape of the specimen.

Book Statistical Models for the Fracture of Disordered Media

Download or read book Statistical Models for the Fracture of Disordered Media written by H.J. Herrmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the century the technological desire to master the fracture of metals, concrete or polymers has boosted research and has left behind an overwhelming amount of literature. In a field where it seems difficult to say anything simple and new, the editors and authors of this book have managed to do just that. The approach to fracture taken here was not conceived by mechanical engineers or material scientists. It is essentially the by-product of exciting developments that have occurred in the last ten to fifteen years within a branch of theoretical physics, called statistical physics. Concepts such as ``percolation'' and ``fractals'', as models for the properties of fracture are not often considered by engineers. A particular aim of this volume is to emphasize the fundamental role disorder plays in the breaking process. The main scope of the volume is pedagogical and is at the same time an overview of fracture mechanics for physicists and an introduction to new concepts of statistical physics for mechanics and engineers. To this end the first half of the book consists of introductory chapters and the second half contains the results that have emerged from this new approach.

Book The Effect of Stress Concentration on the Fracture and Deformation Characteristics of Ceramics and Metals

Download or read book The Effect of Stress Concentration on the Fracture and Deformation Characteristics of Ceramics and Metals written by Volker Weiss and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of non-uniform stress distributions on fracture strength were studied on four mate rials that exhibit brittle behavior; Wesgo AL995, Mykroy 750 and 1100 (ceramics) and Plexiglas (acrylic plastic). Analysis of the results of both notch tensile and bend tests on these materials indicate that fracture in ceramic materials can be explained by a maximum fracture stress concept provided that the inherent inhomogeneity of these materials is considered in the analysis. Weibull's statistical theory of fracture appears to be ap plicable to the analysis of inhomogeneity. The be havior of Plexiglas is similar to that previously observed for high strength metals. Studies of plastic flow in metallic flat notch tensile speci mens indicate that the distribution of the princi pal longitudinal strain across the notch section is related to the distribution of the longitudinal elastic stress raised to the power b, where b is primarily a function of the strain hardening ex ponent of the material. Also, Neuber's conclusion that K sub t represents the geometric mean of the true stress and true strain concentration factors in pure shear seems generally applicable to the plane stress tension case.
