Book Statistical Methods in the Non linear Theory of Elastic Shells

Download or read book Statistical Methods in the Non linear Theory of Elastic Shells written by V. V. Bolotin and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The correct solution of the problem of hazardous loads may be obtained only by means of statistical methods. The considerable discrepancy between the experimental values of the critical loads is explained by the fact that the value of the latter is very sensitive to initial deformations, defects in the preparation and attachment, and to non-uniformities of loading, etc. In turn, the factors mentioned have an accidental character and are subject to some statistical laws. Knowing the laws of the distribution of these accidental factors, one can establish laws of the distribution of the parameters characteristic of the deformed state of the shell. The problem of the engineering calculation of the shell is then reduced to the determination of the load values at which the probability of 'buckling' (or of the hazardous state determined in any arbitrary sense) does not exceed some previously established value for a given construction. The statistical approach serves also as a basis for the correct interpretation of the experimental results and of the tabulation of the results of different authors.

Book The Nonlinear Theory of Elastic Shells

Download or read book The Nonlinear Theory of Elastic Shells written by A. Libai and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nonlinear Theory of Elastic Shells: One Spatial Dimension presents the foundation for the nonlinear theory of thermoelastic shells undergoing large strains and large rotations. This book discusses several relatively simple equations for practical application. Organized into six chapters, this book starts with an overview of the description of nonlinear elastic shell. This text then discusses the foundation of three-dimensional continuum mechanics that are relevant to the shell theory approach. Other chapters cover several topics, including birods, beamshells, and axishells that begins with a derivation of the equations of motion by a descent from the equations of balance of linear and rotational momentum of a three-dimensional material continuum. This book discusses as well the approach to deriving complete field equations for one- or two-dimensional continua from the integral equations of motion and thermodynamics of a three-dimensional continuum. The final chapter deals with the analysis of unishells. This book is a valuable resource for physicists, mathematicians, and scientists.

Book Non Classical Problems in the Theory of Elastic Stability

Download or read book Non Classical Problems in the Theory of Elastic Stability written by Isaac Elishakoff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a structure is put under an increasing compressive load, it becomes unstable and buckling occurs. Buckling is a particularly significant concern in designing shell structures such as aircraft, automobiles, ships, or bridges. This book discusses stability analysis and buckling problems and offers practical tools for dealing with uncertainties that exist in real systems. The techniques are based on two complementary theories which are developed in the text. First, the probabilistic theory of stability is presented, with particular emphasis on reliability. Both theoretical and computational issues are discussed. Secondly, the authors present the alternative to probability based on the notion of 'anti-optimization', a theory that is valid when the necessary information for probabilistic analysis is absent, that is, when only scant data are available. Design engineers, researchers, and graduate students in aerospace, mechanical, marine, and civil engineering who are concerned with issues of structural integrity will find this book a useful reference source.

Book Discretization Methods in Structural Mechanics

Download or read book Discretization Methods in Structural Mechanics written by Günther Kuhn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of the digital computer has given great impetus to the development of modern discretization methods in structural mechanics. The young history of the finite element method (FEM) reflects the dramatic increase of computing speed and storage capacity within a relatively short period of time. The history of the boundary element method (BEM) is still younger. Presently, intense scientific efforts aimed at extending the range of application of the BEM can be observed. More than 10 years ago, O.C. Zienkiewicz and his co-workers published the first papers on the coupling of FE and BE discretizations of subregions of solids for the purpose of exploiting the complementary advantages of the two discretization methods and reducing their disadvantages. The FEM has revolutionized structural analysis in industry as well as academia. The BEM has a fair share in the continuation of this revolution. Both discretization methods have become a domain of vigorous, world-wide research activities. The rapid increase of the number of specialized journals and scientific meetings indicates the remarkable increase of research efforts in this important subdolll.ain of computational ulechanics. Several discussions of this situation in the Committee for Discretization Methods ill Solid Mechanics of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) resulted in the plan to submit a proposal to the General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) to sponsor a pertinent IUTAM Symposium.

Book Bifurcation and Buckling in Structures

Download or read book Bifurcation and Buckling in Structures written by Kiyohiro Ikeda and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bifurcation and Buckling in Structures describes the theory and analysis of bifurcation and buckling in structures. Emphasis is placed on a general procedure for solving nonlinear governing equations and an analysis procedure related to the finite-element method. Simple structural examples using trusses, columns, and frames illustrate the principles. Part I presents fundamental issues such as the general mathematical framework for bifurcation and buckling, procedures for the buckling load/mode analyses, and numerical analysis procedures to trace the solution curves and switch to bifurcation solutions. Advanced topics include asymptotic theory of bifurcation and bifurcation theory of symmetric systems. Part II deals with buckling of perfect and imperfect structures. An overview of the member buckling of columns and beams is provided, followed by the buckling analysis of truss and frame structures. The worst and random imperfections are studied as advanced topics. An extensive review of the history of buckling is presented. This text is ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in engineering and applied mathematics. To assist readers, problems are listed at the end of each chapter, and their answers are given at the end of the book. Kiyohiro Ikeda is Professor Emeritus at Tohoku University, Japan. Kazuo Murota is a Project Professor at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Japan, as well as Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and Tokyo Metropolitan University, Japan.

Book Geometric Method for Stability of Non Linear Elastic Thin Shells

Download or read book Geometric Method for Stability of Non Linear Elastic Thin Shells written by Jordanka Ivanova and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE This book deals with the new developments and applications of the geometric method to the nonlinear stability problem for thin non-elastic shells. There are no other published books on this subject except the basic ones of A. V. Pogorelov (1966,1967,1986), where variational principles defined over isometric surfaces, are postulated, and applied mainly to static and dynamic problems of elastic isotropic thin shells. A. V. Pogorelov (Harkov, Ukraine) was the first to provide in his monographs the geometric construction of the deformed shell surface in a post-critical stage and deriving explicitely the asymptotic formulas for the upper and lower critical loads. In most cases, these formulas were presented in a closed analytical form, and confirmed by experimental data. The geometric method by Pogorelov is one of the most important analytical methods developed during the last century. Its power consists in its ability to provide a clear geometric picture of the postcritical form of a deformed shell surface, successfully applied to a direct variational approach to the nonlinear shell stability problems. Until now most Pogorelov's monographs were written in Russian, which limited the diffusion of his ideas among the international scientific community. The present book is intended to assist and encourage the researches in this field to apply the geometric method and the related results to everyday engineering practice.
