Book Statistical Thermodynamics Of Surfaces Interfaces And Membranes

Download or read book Statistical Thermodynamics Of Surfaces Interfaces And Membranes written by Samuel Safran and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the structural and thermodynamic properties of surfaces, interfaces, and membranes is important for both fundamental and practical reasons. Important applications include coatings, dispersants, encapsulating agents, and biological materials. Soft materials, important in the development of new materials and the basis of many biological systems, cannot be designed using trial and error methods due to the multiplicity of components and parameters. While these systems can sometimes be analyzed in terms of microscopic mixtures, it is often conceptually simpler to regard them as dispersions and to focus on the properties of the internal interfaces found in these systems. The basic physics centers on the properties of quasi-two-dimensional systems embedded in the three-dimensional world, thus exhibiting phenomena that do not exist in bulk materials. This approach is the basis behind the theoretical presentation of Statistical Thermodynamics of Surfaces, Interfaces, and Membranes. The approach adapted allows one to treat the rich diversity of phenomena investigated in the field of soft matter physics (including both colloid/interface science as well as the materials and macromolecular aspects of biological physics) such as interfacial tension, the roughening transition, wetting, interactions between surfaces, membrane elasticity, and self-assembly. Presented as a set of lecture notes, this book is aimed at physicists, physical chemists, biological physicists, chemical engineers, and materials scientists who are interested in the statistical mechanics that underlie the macroscopic, thermodynamic properties of surfaces, interfaces, and membranes. This paperback edition contains all the material published in the original hard-cover edition as well as additional clarifications and explanations.

Book Statistical Mechanics of Membranes and Surfaces

Download or read book Statistical Mechanics of Membranes and Surfaces written by David Nelson and published by World Scientific Publishing Company Incorporated. This book was released on 1989 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth Jerusalem Winter School on the Statistical Mechanics of Membranes and Surfaces was held from December 28, 1987 to January 6, 1988. The School focused on the theory of the highly convoluted surface fluctuations which appear in such diverse condensed matter system as microemulsions, wetting and growth interfaces, bulk lyotropic liquid crystals, chalcogenide glasses and sheet polymers. The delicate interplay between geometry and statistical mechanics in these systems can be described using tools from the fields og polymer physics, differential geometry, and critical phenomena. Our theoretical understanding of these problems can be tested by a wide variety of laboratory experiments, which probe fluctuations ranging from relatively benign capillary waves at interfaces, to wild undulations in biological membranes. The School was fortunate to have many lecturers who were outstanding teachers as well as distinguished scientists. Virtually all the lecturers contributed manuscripts to this volume, which can serve as a useful introduction for theorists and experimentalists who wish to learn more about this rapidly developing field.

Book Two Dimensional Quantum Gravity And Random Surfaces 8th Jerusalem Winter School For Theoretical Physics

Download or read book Two Dimensional Quantum Gravity And Random Surfaces 8th Jerusalem Winter School For Theoretical Physics written by David J Gross and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991-12-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years there has been much study of random two dimensional surfaces. These provide simple models of string theories with a few degrees of freedom, as well as toy models of quantum gravity. They have possible applications to the statistical mechanics of phase boundaries and to the development of an effective string description of QCD.Recently, methods have been developed to treat these theories nonperturbatively, based on discrete triangulations of the surfaces that can be generated by simple matrix models. Exact solutions with a rich mathematical structure have emerged. All these matters are discussed fully in this book.
