Book Modeling Nonlinear Problems in the Mechanics of Strings and Rods

Download or read book Modeling Nonlinear Problems in the Mechanics of Strings and Rods written by Oliver M. O'Reilly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents theories of deformable elastic strings and rods and their application to broad classes of problems. Readers will gain insights into the formulation and analysis of models for mechanical and biological systems. Emphasis is placed on how the balance laws interplay with constitutive relations to form a set of governing equations. For certain classes of problems, it is shown how a balance of material momentum can play a key role in forming the equations of motion. The first half of the book is devoted to the purely mechanical theory of a string and its applications. The second half of the book is devoted to rod theories, including Euler’s theory of the elastica, Kirchhoff ’s theory of an elastic rod, and a range of Cosserat rod theories. A variety of classic and recent applications of these rod theories are examined. Two supplemental chapters, the first on continuum mechanics of three-dimensional continua and the second on methods from variational calculus, are included to provide relevant background for students. This book is suited for graduate-level courses on the dynamics of nonlinearly elastic rods and strings.

Book Dynamics in Small Confining Systems III Volume 464

Download or read book Dynamics in Small Confining Systems III Volume 464 written by J. M. Drake and published by . This book was released on 1997-06-03 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfacial science has rapidly expanded beyond the original realm of chemistry to include physics, mechanical and chemical engineering, biology, materials science, and other specialized subfields. This book in a series from MRS emphasizes the effects of confinement on the physical and chemical properties of equilibrium and nonequilibrium systems. Of particular interest is the question of how nearby surfaces or ultra-small geometries can force a system to behave in ways significantly different than it behaves in bulk. Theoretical, experimental and computational evidence of the effects of confinement on gaseous, liquid and solid systems is presented. Topics include: probing confined systems; structure and dynamics of liquids at interfaces; nanorheology and tribology; adsorption; diffusion in porous systems and reaction dynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-dielectric constant materials are needed to improve the performance and speed of future integrated circuits. In fact, the diversity of contributors to this book is testimony to the global significance of the topic to the future of semiconductor manufacturing. Presentations include those by semiconductor equipment manufacturers and chemical source suppliers, academia from six countries, four government laboratories and five major device manufacturers. Approaches to designing and implementing reduction in dielectric constant for intermetal dielectric materials are featured and range from the evolution of silicon dioxide to fluorinated silicate glass, to the use of inorganic/organic polymers and spin-on-material, to fluorinated diamond-like carbon and nanoporous silica. The book also addresses the practical aspects of the use of low-dielectric constant materials such as chemical mechanical polishing of these materials and optimization of wiring delays in devices utilizing low-k material.

Book excerpt: Perspectives in Supramolecular Chemistry Founded by J.-M. Lehn Perspectives in Supramolecular Chemistry reflects research which develops supramolecular structures with specific new properties, such as recognition, transport and simulation of biosystems or new materials. The series covers all areas from theoretical and modelling aspects through organic and inorganic chemistry and biochemistry to materials, solid-state and polymer sciences reflecting the many and varied applications of supramolecular structures in modern chemistry. Giant Vesicles Edited by Pier Luigi Luisi and Peter Walde Institute für Polymere, ETH-Zürich, Switzerland Giant vesicles or giant liposomes are supramolecular assembles of amphiphiles, surface active substances which normally contain one or two hydrophobic chains and one hydrophilic head. Due to their relatively large size, giant vesicles are easily observed by light microscopy. This volume provides an overview of ideas and results obtained from experimental studies as well as theoretical approaches. A wide variety of aspects ranging from pure mathematics and physical considerations to biochemical and biological applications are covered. Historical and fundamental aspects are discussed as well as a range of experimental approaches including the micromanipulation and micro-puncturing of single giant vesicles. 87 international contributors comment on a wide range of issues contained under the five main part headings: Introduction Preparation Methods Basic Theoretical Aspects Physical Properties Chemical and Biological Aspects. Giant Vesicles has been written for researchers in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry and biophysics, working in supra-molecular chemistry, surfactant science, liposome and pharmaceutical sciences.

Book Materials for Optical Limiting II Volume 479

Download or read book Materials for Optical Limiting II Volume 479 written by Richard Lee Sutherland and published by . This book was released on 1997-12-30 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of lasers and systems employing lasers has brought with it the potential for adverse effects from these bright, coherent light sources. This includes the possibility of damage from pulsed lasers, as well as temporary blinding by continuous-waver lasers. With nearly every wavelength possible being emitted by these sources, there exists a need to develop optical limiters and tunable filters which can suppress undesired radiation of any wavelength. This book addresses a number of materials and devices which have the potential for meeting the challenge. The proceedings is divided into five parts. Parts I and II cover research in organic and inorganic materials primarily based on nonlinear absorption or phase transitions for optical limiting of pulsed lasers. Part III includes photo-refractive materials and liquid crystals which find primary applications in dynamic filters. Part IV covers various aspects of device and material characterization, including nonlinear beam propagation effects. Theoretical modelling of materials properties is the subject of Part V.
