This dissertation presents four empirical papers that investigate the role of domain general cognitive processes in the learning of linguistic structure. The first paper describes the contribution of chunking-a basic memory process-to the phenomenon known as statistical learning, which describes learners' ability to leverage the regularities present in the environment to form concrete representations of the input, such as finding the words in speech. The second paper extends these findings by showing how chunking can also account for the statistical learning and generalization of non-adjacent dependencies, a key feature of many linguistic systems. The third paper demonstrates that individual differences in statistically-based chunking of artificial language statistics significantly predicts sensitivity to comparable statistical structures in natural language. The final paper presents a meta-analysis of nearly 500 peer-reviewed studies on statistical learning in infants, children, and adults, tests its utility across different language properties, and proposes several methodological considerations that may benefit future experimentation. Together, these studies highlight the fundamental contribution of basic, domain general computations to language-and how they may even shape the evolution of linguistic structure over time.

A hybrid view of word-learning, called the emergentist coalition theory, combines cognitive constraints, social-pragmatic factors, and global attentional mechanisms to arrive at a balanced account of how children construct principles of word learning. In twelve experiments, with children ranging from 12 to 25 months of age, data are described that support the emergentist coalition theory.

The book is full of intricate reasoning, but the stunning aspect is that the reasoning moves between not only complex syntax and diverse languages, but it makes predictions about what two-year-old children will assume about the jumble of linguistic input that confronts them. Those predictions, Hyams shows, are supported by a discriminating analysis of acquisition data in English and Italian. Let us examine the linguistic context for a moment before we discuss her theory. The ultimate issue in linguistic theory is the explanation of how a child can acquire any human language. To capture this fact we must posit an innate mechanism which meets two opposite constraints: it must be broad enough to account for the diversity of human language, and narrow enough so that the child does not make irrelevant hypotheses about his own language, particularly ones from which there is no recovery. That is, a child must not posit a grammar which permits all of the sentences of a language as well as other sentences which are not in the language. In a word, the child must not create a language in which one cannot make adult discriminations between grammatical and ungrammatical.
