Book excerpt: This volume is the outgrowth of several international meetings to discuss a vision for the future of solar radio physics: the development of a new radio instrument. From these discussions, the concept for the Frequency Agile Solar Radiotelescope (FASR) was born. Most of the chapters of this book are based oninvitedtalksattheFASRScienceWorkshop,heldinGreenbank,WVinMay 2002, and a special session on Solar and Space Weather Radiophysics held at the 200th American Astronomical Society meeting held in Albuquerque, NM in June 2002. Although many of the chapters deal with topics of interest in planning for FASR, other topics in Solar and Space Weather Radiophysics, such as solar radar and interplanetary scintillation, are covered to round out the discipline. The authors have been asked to write with a tutorial approach, to make the book useful to graduate students and scientists new to radio physics. This book is more than a compilation of FASR science topics. The FASR instrument concept is so revolutionary—by extending capability by an order of magnitude in several dimensions at once (frequency coverage, spatial reso- tion,dynamicrange,timeresolution,polarizationprecision)—thatitchallenges scientiststothinkinnewways. Theauthorsofthefollowingchaptershavebeen taskednotonlywithreviewingthecurrentstateofthe?eld,butalsowithlooking to the future and imagining what is possible. Radio emission is extremely complex because it is generated so readily, and every imaginable plasma parameter affects it. This is both its great strength and its weakness.

Book excerpt: Emission at 2800 Mc/s (lambda = 10.7 cm) has been examined for 164 solar flare events in 1957-1961 that displayed type II and/or type IV emission at meter wavelengths. Characteristics of the centimeter bursts are presented and discussed in relation to the meter bursts, flares, the magnetic class of the associated sunspots, ionospheric disturbances (SWF), and geomagnetic and solar proton (PCA) effects. No centimeter bursts were detected for 13% of the events; bursts with an impulsive profile were observed for 82% of the events. Of the impulsive bursts, 74% reached maximum quickly, displaying a simple, narrow burst profile (average halfwidth 1.8 minutes); the rest had complex profiles containing a predominant broad component (average halfwidth 17 minutes). The narrow profile bursts are considered to be M type, and the broad profile bursts to evidence type IV emission. The majority of the narrow profile centimeter bursts corresponded to events in which only a type II burst was observed at the meter wavelengths. When type IV bursts were observed at the meter wavelengths, narrow profile centimeter bursts were seen in 43% of the cases and broad profile bursts in 57%. A strong association with magnetically complex sunspots, flares of importance> or = 2(+) SWF of importance> or = 3( - ), geomagnetic storms, and PCA was found for only those events in which the centimeter burst had a broad profile. Book excerpt: In previous studies correlating E> 10 MeV proton fluxes and spectra with various associated microwave burst parameters, the resulting high correlations were assumed to reflect a common acceleration process for the protons and the microwave-emitting electrons. We suggest and test an alternative explanation for these correlations, which we term the Big Flare Syndrome (BFS), that states that, statistically, energetic flare phenomena are more intense in larger flares, regardless of the detailed physics. Peak 1-8 A X-ray fluxes, characteristic of the thermal flare, are correlated with peak proton fluxes to derive correlation coefficients characteristics of the BFS. Of all microwave parameters tested for the 1973-1979 period, only the time-integrated flux densities at 8800 and 15400 MHz may be significantly larger than expected form the BFS. We fail to confirm previous results associating peak proton spectra with peak microwave spectral characteristics, thus finding no evidence that peak microwave fluxes are indicative of proton acceleration. We extend this conclusion to peak hard X-ray correlations. The strongly nonlinear relationship deduced between flare energy and proton production also appears invalid.

O. Kiepenheuer (Chairman), L. Davis, L. Dezso (Local Organizer), A.D. Fokker, R. Michard, A.B. Severny, H.J. Smith, Z. Svestka, and H. Tanaka. In order to ensure prompt publication, the manuscripts had to be supplied by the authors 1 month after the meeting. The discussions have been recorded on tape. Their reproduction in this book, however, is based almost completely on the contributors' writing down their comments and questions on the spot. Two special projects have been reported and discussed shortly during the sym posium: The world wide project 'Cooperative Study of Solar Active Regions' (CSSAR) organized by Dr. R. Michard, under the auspices of the IAU, which has put at the disposal of our solar community a precious observing material on Active Regions over a period of 6 months.
