Book Private and Public Sector Collaboration in Guam s Tourism Industry Is Guam Prepared for the Future

Download or read book Private and Public Sector Collaboration in Guam s Tourism Industry Is Guam Prepared for the Future written by Fred R. Schumann and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008-01-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of tourism development has been explored by a number of scholars and increasingly, over the past decade, more literature has become available on tourism development on small islands . For many of the small island territories or nations, they share a number of major issues in the area of tourism. These include vast distances from source markets, foreign investment and the resulting leakage of revenue, over-dependence on tourism (mono-structured economy), dependence on imports, and an overburdened infrastructure, just to name a few (Gössling 2003; Harrison, 2004; McElroy, 2006). Most island destinations rely on stakeholders from not only a single sector, but from both private and public sectors to tackle these issues (Buhalis, 1999). As a tourism-dependent economy, Guam receives at least sixty percent of its governmental revenues from tourism. Japanese visitors had made up over 80 percent of Guam s visitor arrivals in earlier years, but numbers started to drop in recent years due to a number of reasons, such as natural disasters, world events, as well as stiffer competition from similar resort destinations. Still, the market remains the largest source of visitors for Guam, with South Korea coming in a distant second in ranking making up approximately 12 percent of Guam s visitor arrivals. As background information to illustrate the importance of public and private sector collaboration efforts on Guam, this research examines some of the changes occurring in Japanese overseas travel. It also reviews how tourist industry stakeholders in a nearby destination like Guam can adopt strategies to meet the changing expectations of this important market. The primary research of this thesis involves the analysis of qualitative data generated from in-depth interviewing in examining the issue of collaboration between the private and public sectors as a method for assisting Guam s tourism industry to prepare for the future. This is followed by multiple case research (Yin 1994) that investigates strategies used in destinations to enhance tourist experiences through attractions. The SWOT Analysis is also utilized as an example of a tool to assist stakeholders in understanding the environment of the present to prepare strategies for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SAGE Handbook integrates basic research on social dimensions of aging. It presents programmatic applications of research in areas not often seen in Handbooks including imprisonment, technology and aging, urban society aged, and elderly migration. The authors constitute a Who′s Who of international gerontology, and the focus on globalization and aging is unique among Handbooks today. This Handbook should be in the library of every social gerontologist. - Vern L. Bengtson, Professor of Gerontology, University of Southern California This volume reflects the emergence of ageing as a global concern, including chapters by international scholars from Asia, Australasia, Europe and North America. It provides a comprehensive overview of key trends and issues in the field, drawing upon the full range of social science disciplines. The Handbook is organized into five parts, each exploring different aspects of research into social aspects of ageing: Disciplinary overviews: summaries of findings from key disciplinary areas within social gerontology. Social relationships and social differences: explores area like social inequality, gender, religion, inter-generational ties, social networks, and friendships. Individual characteristics and change in later life: examines different aspects of individual aging, including self and identity, cognitive processes, and bio-social interactions and their impact on physical and psychological aging. Comparative perspectives and cultural innovations: topics include ageing and development, ageing in a global context, migration, and cross-cultural perspectives on grandparenthood. Policy issues: covering policy concerns such aslong-term care, technology and older people, end of life issues, work and retirement, and the politics of old age. This will be essential reading for all students, researchers and policy-makers concerned with the major issues influencing the lives of older people across the globe.

Book The Well Being of the Elderly in Asia

Download or read book The Well Being of the Elderly in Asia written by Albert Isaac Hermalin and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2010-09-22 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the broadest sense, The Well-Being of the Elderly in Asia is a study of social change and of anticipating future social change. It examines the effects on the current and future elderly of the rapid demographic transition that has occurred over much of Asia, accompanied in many countries by equally dramatic social and economic transformations. Policymakers in Asia have been aware of these trends and their potentially deleterious consequences for a decade or more, and have sought to fashion appropriate policies and programs that anticipate and mitigate their effects. Accordingly, any study of the sociodemographic trends and their impact must be examined in the light of policies put in place and under development.

Book Framing in Sustainability Science

Download or read book Framing in Sustainability Science written by Takashi Mino and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book offers both conceptual and empirical descriptions of how to “frame” sustainability challenges. It defines “framing” in the context of sustainability science as the process of identifying subjects, setting boundaries, and defining problems. The chapters are grouped into two sections: a conceptual section and a case section. The conceptual section introduces readers to theories and concepts that can be used to achieve multiple understandings of sustainability; in turn, the case section highlights different ways of comprehending sustainability for researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders. The book offers diverse illustrations of what sustainability concepts entail, both conceptually and empirically, and will help readers become aware of the implicit framings in sustainability-related discourses. In the extant literature, sustainability challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, and rapid urbanization have largely been treated as “pre-set,” fixed topics, while possible solutions have been discussed intensively. In contrast, this book examines the framings applied to the sustainability challenges themselves, and illustrates the road that led us to the current sustainability discourse.

Book The Economics of Aging

Download or read book The Economics of Aging written by David A. Wise and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economics of Aging presents results from an ongoing National Bureau of Economic Research project. Contributors consider the housing mobility and living arrangements of the elderly, their labor force participation and retirement, the economics of their health care, and their financial status. The goal of the research is to further our understanding both of the factors that determine the well-being of the elderly and of the consequences that follow from an increasingly older population with longer individual life spans. Each paper is accompanied by critical commentary.
