Book STATISM ITS RECURRING CYCLES IN MEXICO ROMANIA

Download or read book STATISM ITS RECURRING CYCLES IN MEXICO ROMANIA written by Olga Magdalena Lazin and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statism, Its Recurring Cycles in Mexico and Romania is focused on governance and its pitfalls. This exhilarating book provides a political and economic analysis of the historical "recurring cycles" of Statism in Mexico and Romania. The cycle is starting with the Aztec Empire. The author focuses on these countries as prime examples of states that have "been experimenting with statism and state corporatism." Ms. Lazin identifies the cycles of Statism that begins with a period of nation building, in Mexico, and brings it up to present, with cycles of anti-statism, and state intervention, as well as complications with the military. General Genario Luna' work with narcotraficantes while being the head of the FBI, is being analyzed. That explains statist enterprise, and presidential involvement of the past 4 presidents in mixing the governmental, and governance culture with the narco-state leadership. In Romania, by contrast, the state owned everything (see GDP data), and so did the socialist Party, and only started privatizing the past 3 decades, after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Central planning went on for 45 years in Romania. The Binom and the deep state are relevant pitfalls of the Securitate-driven governance in Romania, at the apex of statism in 2021. The amparo prevalent in the Mexican legal system, proves how one can get away with murder, if the amparo is being paid. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This exhilarating book provides a political and economic analysis of the historical "recurring cycles" of Statism in Mexico and Romania. The author focuses on these countries as prime examples of states that have extensively "been experimenting with statism and state corporatism." Dr. Lazin identifies the cycles of Statism that begin with a period of "high central government authority" alternating with an Anti-Statist period of "minimal central government authority," and an "Active State" that "mediates between" the other two points." - James Wallace Wilkie, PROFMEX "The similarities and contrasts between the two juridical systems are enormous. The Mexican jurisprudence system is closer to the HABEAS CORPUS in the USA, but the Mexican AMPARO, is a very distinct feature, that is being exploited by corrupt government officials, and one can get away with anything if an amparo amount has been set by a judge. Like General Genario Luna, the dark assassin, now in jail in the U.S.A." "This critical book explains how the two countries compare and contrast. Mexico, a country that Dr. Olga Lazin has studied deeply and firsthand, she is a genius, on how she makes the case for how the government had been working directly with the military and the drug lords. Understanding of the statist Mexican government, namely general García Genario Luna's criminal activities is tantamount. Dr. Lazin astutely explains the ironies and complexities of Romanian statism." - Dr. Lyle Brown, Latin American Center, Texas" "Magnificent book, reflects vividly Romanian realities." - MARIN POPAN, Ph.D. "Historically factual, captivating, and analytical." - Mircea Valentin Moldovan, Romania EON

Book State and Nation Making in Latin America and Spain Volume 1

Download or read book State and Nation Making in Latin America and Spain Volume 1 written by Miguel A. Centeno and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-29 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of institutional capacity in the developing world has become a central theme in twenty-first-century social science. Many studies have shown that public institutions are an important determinant of long-run rates of economic growth. This book argues that to understand the difficulties and pitfalls of state building in the contemporary world, it is necessary to analyze previous efforts to create institutional capacity in conflictive contexts. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the process of state and nation building in Latin America and Spain from independence to the 1930s. The book examines how Latin American countries and Spain tried to build modern and efficient state institutions for more than a century - without much success. The Spanish and Latin American experience of the nineteenth century was arguably the first regional stage on which the organizational and political dilemmas that still haunt states were faced. This book provides an unprecedented perspective on the development and contemporary outcome of those state and nation-building projects.

Book Freedom in the World 1997 1998

Download or read book Freedom in the World 1997 1998 written by Adrian Karatnycky and published by Transaction Pub. This book was released on 1998 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Comparative Survey of Freedom is an institutional effort by Freedom House to monitor the progress and decline of political rights and civil liberties in 191 nations and 59 related territories. These year-end reviews of freedom began in 1955, when they were called the Balance Sheet of Freedom and, still later, the Annual Survey of the Progress of Freedom. This program was expanded in the early 1970s, and has appeared in Freedom Review since 1973. It has also been issued in a more developed context as a yearbook since 1978. Since 1989, the Survey project has been a year-long effort produced by regional experts, consultants and human rights specialists. The Survey derives its information from a wide range of sources. Most valued of these are the many human rights activists, journalists, editors and political figures around the world who keep us informed of the human rights situation in their countries. Throughout the year. Freedom House personnel regularly conduct fact-finding missions to gain more in-depth knowledge of the vast political transformations affecting our world. During these week-to-month-long investigations, we make every effort to meet a cross-section of political parties and associations, human rights monitors, religious figures, representatives of both the private sector and trade union movement, academics and journalists. During the past year. Freedom House staff traveled to numerous countries throughout most of the world's geographical and political regions. The Survey project team also consults a vast array of published source materials, ranging from the reports of other human rights organizations to often rare, regional newspapers and magazines. This year's Survey team includes: Adrian Karatnycky, Martin Edwin Anderson, Kristen Guida, Marshall Freeman Harris, Thomas R. Lansner, Arch Puddington, Leonard R. Sussman, and George Zarycky. The general editor of Freedom in the World is Roger Kaplan; the managing editor is Tara Kelly. This year's research coordinator was Charles Graybow.

Book World Development Report 2006

Download or read book World Development Report 2006 written by Francisco H. G. Ferreira and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequality of opportunity, both within and among nations, sustains extreme deprivation, results in wasted human potential and often weakens prospects for overall prosperity and economic growth, concludes the 2006 World Development Report. To correct this situation and reduce poverty more effectively, Equity and Development recommends ensuring more equitable access by the poor to health care, education, jobs, capital, and secure land rights, among others. It also calls for greater equality of access to political freedoms and political power, breaking down stereotyping and discrimination, and improving access by the poor to justice systems and infrastructure. To level the playing field among countries, and thereby reduce global inequities that hurt the poor in developing countries, the report calls for removal of trade barriers in rich countries, flexibility to allow greater in-migration of lower-skilled people from developing countries, and increased -- and more effective -- development assistance.

Book Social Inclusion and Economic Development in Latin America

Download or read book Social Inclusion and Economic Development in Latin America written by Mayra Buvinić and published by IDB. This book was released on 2004 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty and inequality in Latin America are easily recognizable in the faces of women, Afro-descendents, the indigenous, people with disabilities, victims of HIV/AIDS, and other groups outside the societal mainstream. Social Inclusion and Economic Development in Latin America reviews the common features of these excluded populations, including their invisibility in official statistics and the stigma, discrimination, and disadvantages they have long endured. But it also examines the region's inclusionary policies and programs that can improve access by these groups to the quality social services and economic and political resources these groups need to level the playing field. Case studies examine ethnic and racial political organization, gender quotas, and labor markets across the region, and social exclusion in Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru. Comparative studies summarize social inclusion policies of both the European Union and selected countries on the Continent.

Book Authoritarianism and the Elite Origins of Democracy

Download or read book Authoritarianism and the Elite Origins of Democracy written by Michael Albertus and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that - in terms of institutional design, the allocation of power and privilege, and the lived experiences of citizens - democracy often does not restart the political game after displacing authoritarianism. Democratic institutions are frequently designed by the outgoing authoritarian regime to shield incumbent elites from the rule of law and give them an unfair advantage over politics and the economy after democratization. Authoritarianism and the Elite Origins of Democracy systematically documents and analyzes the constitutional tools that outgoing authoritarian elites use to accomplish these ends, such as electoral system design, legislative appointments, federalism, legal immunities, constitutional tribunal design, and supermajority thresholds for change. The study provides wide-ranging evidence for these claims using data that spans the globe and dates from 1800 to the present. Albertus and Menaldo also conduct detailed case studies of Chile and Sweden. In doing so, they explain why some democracies successfully overhaul their elite-biased constitutions for more egalitarian social contracts.
