Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stationary Steam Engines: Especially as Adapted to Electric Lighting Purposes The following pages were written at the request of the editor of the Electrician and Electrical Engineer, from the columns of which periodical they have been reprinted. It was desired that a concise, yet tolerably complete, account should be given of the changes which have taken place during the years which have elapsed since the modern steam engine began to find application in modern industries, and especially those which have been brought about by the demands of the last established of those industries - electric lighting - and which have been the result of unprecedentedly exacting conditions as to efficiency, regulation, and smooth action at high speed of rotation. The subject was deemed to be of great importance to all mechanical engineers in any way connected with this latest department of their professional work; and it was desired that a systematic outline should be given of the history of the development of the now standard type of engine for "electric lighting plants" from the older, and still standard, types of stationary engine, in such form that readers should be able to compare the causes of such changes, with the modifications of construction and operation to which they have given rise. This the writer has endeavored to do, giving a philosophical account of this evolution of the later forms of engine, and of the stage to which it has progressed, while, at the same time, presenting correct descriptions of the forms and construction of representative machines. It has been his endeavor to do full justice to the several engines described, and he has carefully avoided the expression of merely personal opinion in regard to debatable points. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1890 edition. Excerpt: ...by, Professor John E. Sweet, formerly the superintendent of the workshops in which instruction in machine work was given in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Cornell University--a position in which he became widely known as one of the most skilful and ingenious mechanical engineers in the United States--later a President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The first of these engines was built at Ithaca for experimental purposes, by students under the instruction of the designer. The Straight Line Engine has many interesting and novel points, which will bear much more extended study than they can be given in the small space which can here be allowed for the description of the engine. The problem, proposed to himself by the inventor, was to design an engine which, while consisting of the smallest possible number of parts, should, nevertheless, be economical in its use of steam, capable of the most perfect regulation attainable with any known device, strong and stiff in every part subjected to the working strains of an engine working at high speed, inexpensive in first cost, and durable as a simple engine can be. This engine is shown in the accompanying illustration. A vertical engine, which is shown at the end of the article, is also designed for all powers; there seems no reason why it should not prove a good style for heavy work; better in some respects, in fact, than the horizontal engine. The engine takes its trade designation from its peculiar form of frame, which is seen to consist of two perfectly straight diverging struts extending from the end of the cylinder directly to the two main bearings, thus carrying the line of resistance to the pull and push of the connections exactly along its own central line. Download or read book Stationary Steam Engines Simple and Compound written by Robert Henry Thurston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stationary Steam Engines, Simple and Compound: Especially as Adapted to Light and Power Plants This little book is composed of articles written by the author for the Electrical Engineer, supplemented by later revision, and by the addition of matter relating to the new multiple-cylinder engine, which had been originally prepared for the lecture-room and subsequently presented in abstract to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. It had its origin in a request, by the editor of the periodical above mentioned, that the readers of that journal be given an account, in simple and concise but fairly complete form, of the various types of steam-engine in common use; of the principles of their design; the circumstances determining their efficiencies and their economy of steam and fuel; their various forms as usually built, and the best methods of insuring further improvement. Book Structures of Change in the Mechanical Age

Download or read book Structures of Change in the Mechanical Age written by Ross Thomson and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2009-05-08 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States registered phenomenal economic growth between the establishment of the new republic and the end of the Civil War. Ross Thomson's fresh study accounts for the unprecedented technological innovations that helped propel antebellum growth. Thomson argues that the transition of the United States from an agrarian economy in 1790 to an industrial leader in 1865 relied fundamentally on the spread of technological knowledge within and across industries. Essential to this spread was a dense web of knowledge-diffusing institutions—new occupations and industries, the patent office, machine shops, mechanics’ associations, scientific societies, public colleges, and the civil engineering profession. Together they composed an integrated innovation system that generated, disseminated, and employed new technical knowledge across ever-widening ranges of the economy. To trace technological change in fourteen major industries and the economy as a whole, Thomson analyzes 14,000 patents, the records of two dozen machinery firms, census data for 1,800 companies, and hundreds of business directories. This exhaustive research leads to his interesting interpretation of technological diffusion and development. Thomson's impressive study of the infrastructure that fueled and supported the young country’s economic and industrial successes will interest students of economic, technological, and business history.
