The planning and design of new power stations can involve complex interaction between the many engineering disciplines involved as well as environmental, planning, economical, political and social pressures. This volume aims to provide a logical review of the procedures involved in power station development. The engineering aspects are outlined in detail, with examples, showing the basis of the relationships involved together with non-engineering factors so that the engineer can draw on the information provided for specific projects. The civil engineering and building of power stations are also treated, from the earliest planning and site selection studies, through estimating, finance and quantity surveying, to final landscaping.

Book Rail Transit Station Area Development

Download or read book Rail Transit Station Area Development written by Richard T Green and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of past and prospective business development around rail transit stations in the Washington DC area. Washington has one of the very few new and extensive rail transit systems in America, although expectations of transit system-induced revitalization in this area have not uniformly been met. This book develops an econometric model of local development (LOCDEV) around major public investments, applies it to the existing Washington transit system, and uses it to forecast future development levels around new stations. The book includes a user's guide to the LOCDEV model and concludes with reflections on modelling and forecasting.

Book International Space Station

Download or read book International Space Station written by David Nixon and published by Circa. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1984 President Ronald Reagan gave NASA the go-ahead to build a Space Station. A generation later, the International Space Station is an established and highly successful research centre in Earth orbit. The history of this extraordinary project is a complex weave of powerful threads - political, diplomatic, financial and technological among them - but none is more fascinating than the story of its design. This book provides the first comprehensive account of the Station's conception, design, development and assembly in space. It begins in 1979 with early NASA concepts based on the use of the Space Shuttle and ends with the final Space Shuttle mission in 2011. As a highly accessible chronicle of a complex piece of design and engineering, it is a book that will appeal to readers far beyond the space field.

Book What Makes a City Planning for Quality of Place

Download or read book What Makes a City Planning for Quality of Place written by J.J. Trip and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2007-02-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban quality is generally considered increasingly important for urban competitiveness. Nevertheless, large urban redevelopment schemes often fail to provide sufficient quality from a user’s perspective. This study therefore investigates the role of urban quality in large-scale urban redevelopment, which is here elaborated in terms of Richard Florida’s concept of quality of place. In a number of extensive case studies, it focuses on prestigious redevelopment projects around the high-speed rail stations in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Lille. It provides an analysis of the role of urban quality in the development of these projects, as well as some insights in the applicability of quality of place in a wider Dutch context. In addition, the study advocates a more open and flexible planning process, based on a distinctly long-term perspective on urban quality.
