Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil Engineering has recently seen enormous progress in the core field of the construction of deep foundations. This book is the result of the International Workshop on Recent Advances in Deep Foundations (IWDPF07), which was held in Yokosuka, Japan from the 1st to the 2nd of February, 2007. Topics under discussion in this book include recent rese

Book A Field Investigation and Analysis of a Large Pipe Pile Under Static and Dynamic Lateral Loadings

Download or read book A Field Investigation and Analysis of a Large Pipe Pile Under Static and Dynamic Lateral Loadings written by DB. Chin and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, an in-situ experiment under lateral static, cyclic, and dynamic loadings, on a large sized steel pipe pile in soft silty clay on the downstream of the Yangtze River and static and dynamic triaxial tests on soil samples in the laboratory are described, and the pile-soil interaction behavior is analyzed and discussed. In the analysis, the finite-element method and other simplified methods are compared using different models of lateral soil stiffness. From the results of the tests as well as the analysis, a possible formulation of the p-y curves of the pile in soft clay under lateral loadings is suggested, and a simplified method of dynamic analysis taking into account the pile-soil interaction is also proposed.

Book Buildings and Structures under Extreme Loads

Download or read book Buildings and Structures under Extreme Loads written by Chiara Bedon and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exceptional loads on buildings and structures may have different causes, including high-strain dynamic effects due to natural hazards, man-made attacks, and accidents, as well as extreme operational conditions (severe temperature variations, humidity, etc.). All of these aspects can be critical for specific structural typologies and/or materials that are particularly sensitive to external conditions. In this regard, dedicated and refined methods are required for their design, analysis, and maintenance under the expected lifetime. There are major challenges related to the structural typology and material properties with respect to the key features of the imposed design load. Further issues can be derived from the need for risk mitigation or retrofit of existing structures as well as from the optimal and safe design of innovative materials/systems. Finally, in some cases, no appropriate design recommendations are available and, thus, experimental investigations can have a key role within the overall process. In this Special Issue, original research studies, review papers, and experimental and/or numerical investigations are presented for the structural performance assessment of buildings and structures under various extreme conditions that are of interest for design.

Book Dynamic Lateral Response of a Pile Group in Clay

Download or read book Dynamic Lateral Response of a Pile Group in Clay written by GW. Blaney and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of lateral dynamic loading tests were conducted on a rigid concrete cap supported by nine 273-mm-diameter steel pipe piles in a square group. The piles were driven 13.7 m into a layered deposit of overconsolidated clay. A linear inertial mass vibrator applied horizontal constant-rate frequency sweep and steady state loadings from frequencies above the first mode resonance to frequencies below the resonance frequency of the pile-soil-cap system at several amplitudes of dynamic load. Sixty channels of system response data were recorded for each test. Frequency response functions between the applied load and points on the pile cap, points on the embedded piles, and locations in the surrounding soil were computed by standard digital signal processing techniques. The average measured pile cap frequency response function peak amplitude was 1.03 × 10-4 mm/N, or about 10 times the static flexibility, and the horizontal resonance frequency was about 7.5 Hz. The measured performance of the group was interpreted in terms of simple modeling techniques.

Book Analysis of Laterally Loaded Piles in Multilayered Soil Deposits

Download or read book Analysis of Laterally Loaded Piles in Multilayered Soil Deposits written by Dipanjan Basu and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on the development of a new method of analysis of laterally loaded piles embedded in a multi-layered soil deposit treated as a three-dimensional continuum. Assuming that soil behaves as a linear elastic material, the governing differential equations for the deflection of laterally loaded piles were obtained using energy principles and calculus of variations. The differential equations were solved using both the method of initial parameters and numerical techniques. Soil resistance, pile deflection, slope of the deflected pile, bending moment and shear force can be easily obtained at any depth along the entire pile length. The results of the analysis were in very good agreement with three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The analysis was further extended to account for soil nonlinearity. A few simple constitutive relationships that allow for modulus degradation with increasing strain were incorporated into the analysis. The interaction of piles in groups was also studied.
