Book Building a Statewide Traffic Count Database

Download or read book Building a Statewide Traffic Count Database written by Nicholas Joseph Linesch and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of California is anticipating considerable growth in the coming years and is demanding advanced quantitative modeling tools to assist in making informed decisions about how to accommodate the growth. Policy makers and the general public are demanding quantitative analysis which results in high tech modeling and data analysis. The tools result in models and simulation of urban systems which depict the impact on the environment, both natural and built and involve developing an understanding of historical trends in order to project future demand for transportation links and building development (transportation and land use modeling). Specifically in this report I will focus on the data preparation required to understand historical trends of traffic volumes in California for validation of the California Statewide Travel Demand Model (CSTDM), detail the procedure of using the counts for validation, and suggest future uses of the count database including describing trends in interregional travel behavior and estimating of corridor level vehicle miles traveled (VMT). Three independently maintained count databases are consolidated in a single interface and utilized for this effort. This analysis provides insight into monitoring effectiveness which is a key component to good modeling; in addition suggestions are made for improvements to the monitoring system. With better data and modeling the policy makers and planners have more information available when making decisions. The tools and data are useful in moving the State towards its goals set in the Climate Action Plan (AB-32) and in implementation of the Sustainable Communities Strategies (SB-375).

Book Statewide Travel Forecasting Models

Download or read book Statewide Travel Forecasting Models written by Alan J. Horowitz and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2006 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 358: Statewide Travel Forecasting Models examines statewide travel forecasting models designed to address planning needs and provide forecasts for statewide transportation, including passenger vehicle and freight movements. The report explores the types and purposes of models being used, integration of state and urban models, data requirements, computer needs, resources (including time, funding, training, and staff), limitations, and overall benefits. The report includes five case studies, two that focus on passenger components, two on freight components, and one on both passenger and freight.

Download or read book Metropolitan Travel Forecasting written by National Research Council (U.S.). Committee for Determination of the State of the Practice in Metropolitan Area Travel Forecasting and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB Special Report 288, Metropolitan Travel Forecasting: Current Practice and Future Direction, examines metropolitan travel forecasting models that provide public officials with information to inform decisions on major transportation system investments and policies. The report explores what improvements may be needed to the models and how federal, state, and local agencies can achieve them. According to the committee that produced the report, travel forecasting models in current use are not adequate for many of today's necessary planning and regulatory uses.

Book Economic Impact Analysis Using Statewide Analysis Model and TREDIS

Download or read book Economic Impact Analysis Using Statewide Analysis Model and TREDIS written by Stasa Vojin Zivojnovic and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation projects do not necessarily get evaluated for economic value or impact even though arguably most projects are done to advance the economy in the long run, from inducing travel to improving market access. Those studies that do provide an economic study in their reports do not explain the methodology or critique the economic study process. This thesis takes a look at using the Texas Statewide Analysis (SAM) in combination with the Transportation Economic Development Impact System (TREDIS) to better understand the bearing a transportation project, or group of projects, may have on a region. The overview and critique of the SAM-TREDIS methodology is completed using a few scenarios of groups of projects for the Texas study region, for which one scenario includes the implementation of HSR in the Texas Triangle. The scenario of high-speed rail is explored as to encourage a future discussion to create a more concrete plan regarding future HSR. While the outputs of SAM for most Texas transportation scenarios were too subtle in difference between scenarios to create informative TREDIS outputs, they provided an in-depth look in the use of SAM and TREDIS separately and collectively. Overall, this method is useful at looking at future roadways projects that produce a moderately significant change in travel characteristics. Another model, or an improved SAM, is recommended for an accurate HSR study.

Book Community Impact Assessment

Download or read book Community Impact Assessment written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide was written as a quick primer for transportation professionals and analysts who assess the impacts of proposed transportation actions on communities. It outlines the community impact assessment process, highlights critical areas that must be examined, identifies basic tools and information sources, and stimulates the thought-process related to individual projects. In the past, the consequences of transportation investments on communities have often been ignored or introduced near the end of a planning process, reducing them to reactive considerations at best. The goals of this primer are to increase awareness of the effects of transportation actions on the human environment and emphasize that community impacts deserve serious attention in project planning and development-attention comparable to that given the natural environment. Finally, this guide is intended to provide some tips for facilitating public involvement in the decision making process.
