Book States of Confusion

Download or read book States of Confusion written by Paul Jury and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than deal with the problems he was facing as a recent college grad, Paul Jury decided to leave them in his rearview mirror. He might not have known the direction his life was headed, but he knew the route he was taking to hit all forty-eight contiguous states on one epic road trip. Filled with plenty of adventure and the unforeseen obstacle (or twelve), States of Confusion puts you in shotgun to see where the road takes Paul. All he knows--after crashing on the beer-soaked couch of his younger brother's frat--is that there's no going back.

Book State of Confusion

Download or read book State of Confusion written by Bryant Welch and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2008-06-10 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally, the answer to the many questions that have been preying on the minds of millions of Americans has arrived. Why are Americans so vulnerable to divisive political tactics? Why did Americans get dragged into such an unwise war in Iraq? Why do fundamentalist religious groups, Fox News, and right-wing radio still play such influential roles in America's political landscape? And why are long-accepted rational scientific ideas like evolution under siege? These questions hold America's future in the balance. Ultimately, they are questions about the American mind. Psychologist-attorney Dr. Bryant Welch has the answers. If America is going to change the mind-set that led us to war in Iraq and left us unable to confront our serious national problems, this book is vitally important. Drawing on his unique experience both as a clinical psychologist and a Washington, D.C., political figure with the American Psychological Association, Dr. Welch shows how the long-term effects of sophisticated new forms of political manipulation have not only led to our debacle in Iraq but are also currently undercutting America's ability to address its very serious problems. In the 1944 movie Gaslight, a husband drives his wife to the brink of insanity by playing games with her sense of reality. Just as in the movie, America's most recent political "gaslighters," such as George W. Bush, Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and many religious leaders, have generated and exploited confusion in the minds of countless Americans. Gaslighters prey on their victim's vulnerability to paranoia, sexual perplexity, and envy to undermine the mind's ability to function rationally. Welch examines why millions of Americans, in response to such assaults, subconsciously and dangerously create their own simplistic reality, even if it is completely different from the more complex reality of the world. Most important, State of Confusion explains how and why Americans must act now to fight back against this harmful manipulation before it's too late. Dr. Welch's exploration of the American mind is both fascinating and frightening, and State of Confusion is a must-read for everyone who cares about the future of this great country.

Book excerpt: Shows the maddening difficulties that voter ID requirements create for participants in US democracy and offers concrete solutions for every person’s vote and voice to count Over the past decade, and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of voter ID laws has skyrocketed, limiting the ability of nearly twenty-five million eligible voters from exercising their constitutional right to cast a vote. In States of Confusion, Don Waisanen, Sonia Jarvis, and Nicole Gordon explore this crisis and the difficulties it has created for American voters, offering practical solutions for this increasingly important problem. Focusing on ten states with the strictest voter documentation requirements, the authors show how people face major barriers to exercising their fundamental democratic right to vote and are therefore slipping through the cracks of our electoral system. They explore voter experiences by drawing on hundreds of online surveys, audits of 150 election offices, community focus groups, and more. Waisanen, Jarvis, and Gordon call on policymakers to adopt uniform national voter identification standards that are simple, accessible, and cost-free. States of Confusion offers a comprehensive and up-to-date look at the voter ID crisis in our country, as well solutions for practitioners, government agencies, and citizens.

Book Streams of Confusion

Download or read book Streams of Confusion written by Brad Scott and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the west during the past four centuries, a small number of thinkers like Hobbes, Hume, Darwin, Nietzsche, Freud, and Huxley have captured the minds of entire generations. Over time their ideologies have not only changed the Western world, but have taken on the status of unquestioned assumptions. Yet these views are greatly and adversely influencing current thought and behavior. you owe it to yourself -- and the people you know -- to not only critically examine and understand these influences in their original contexts, but to challenge them in their present forms. In these pages Scott examines thirteen leading ideas and the, through an analysis of primary sources, critiques and challenges those ideas from a reasoned and thoroughly biblical perspective. In the process, he provides hard evidence in defense of Christianity. Evidence you can use as you dialogue with those who are trapped in the cultural currents and have yet to hear God's voice above the confusing din." -- back cover.

Book Holding the Center

Download or read book Holding the Center written by Richard Strozzi-Heckler and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2011-06-21 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in all his books, Heckler draws from personal experience: training his horse, cultivating presence in aikido dojos, consulting with business executives, raising children. A masterful and encompassing book, Holding the Center develops from the fulcrum of the self in the natural world. Many of Heckler’s lessons arise from his life as a householder and father. Community is a larger family—we make alliances to “take care of what matters to us.” But, as Heckler teaches, that takes listening to others with an open heart, and learning what the needs of others are.The world can be a sanctuary, if we find a balance between instinct and choice. Richard Strozzi Heckler sounds an important call about the interplay between power and generosity in these subtle and luminous essays.

Book My Faith So Far

Download or read book My Faith So Far written by Patton Dodd and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-06-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this frank, funny, and often challenging memoir about life in and out of the church, twenty-something Patton Dodd reveals his quest for an authentic experience of God. On his journey he attempts to pinpoint and justify his belief in God, first with the fervent absolutes that characterize a new believer’s faith but then with a growing awareness of the cultural complexities that define his faith and encompass his understanding of Christianity. When a spiritual awakening in his last year of high school wrenches Dodd out of his rebellious party days, he embarks on a quest for God. He exchanges pot smoking for worship dancing, gives up MTV for Christian pop, and enrolls at a Christian university. Soon, however, he finds himself ill at ease with the other Christians around him and with the cloying superficiality of the Christian subculture. Dodd tells his story in contradictory terms—conversion and confusion, acceptance and rejection, spiritual highs and psychological lows. With painstaking honesty, he tries to negotiate a relationship with his faith apart from the cultural trappings that often clothe it. Dodd’s moving story paints a nuanced and multilayered portrait of an earnest quest for God: the hunger for genuine faith, the bleak encounters with doubt, and the consuming questions that challenge the intellect and the soul. This is a story that will resonate with the emerging generation of young adults attempting to break new ground within their own faith tradition.

Book The God Confusion

  • Author : Gary Cox
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA

  • ISBN : 1623569214
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book The God Confusion written by Gary Cox and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is God? Does he exist? Can we know? The God Confusion offers a down-to-earth beginner's guide for anyone interested in these questions. It does not evangelize for God and religion or, indeed, for atheism, secularism and science. Instead, it explores in a witty yet objective and balanced way the idea of God and the strengths and weaknesses of the standard arguments for his existence. Gary Cox shows that the philosophical reasoning at the heart of these arguments is logically incapable of moving beyond speculation to any kind of proof. The only credible philosophical position is therefore agnosticism. The God Confusion defends science generally and the theory of evolution in particular. It argues that if religion is not to appear increasingly outdated and ridiculous in the eyes of free-thinking, educated people, it must accommodate science and accept that science has replaced the old God of the gaps as an explanation of natural phenomena. Concluding that God may or may not exist, on the grounds that science, philosophy and theology are inherently incapable of proving or disproving his existence, The God Confusion acknowledges that religious faith based on a deliberate commitment to live as though there is a moral God is a coherent notion and a worthwhile, even prudent enterprise. At the same time, it rejects the idea of inner certainty as mere wishful thinking, arguing that it is not a coherent basis for belief and is simply bad faith.

Book excerpt: I set out on the path of writing to work through all the stuff that floats around my thick skull, and that's mostly what this book is about. It was only through the encouragement of others, that it was actually formed into a book and has been brought to you. In everything I write there is an intent to move the reader one way or the other. All of my work that could not accomplish this was left on the hard drive of my computer and will stay there. Through my words and their meanings, I want you to think and feel something, good or bad it does not matter as long as it takes you somewhere. I hope that reading this book can open your mind to new thoughts and new ideas and give you something to carry through your day.Thank you, B.D. Smith

Download or read book Web of Confusion written by William J. King, Jr. and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of it's kind. A hip hop text book chronicling the struggles of a group of young adults trying to make it in the music industry as they go back and forth between the temptation of the criminal element and the reality of following the rules. In today's world, the road to success has a few more vehicles on it than it did fifty or sixty years ago. Not only do you need to own these vehicles, you need to use them properly and know how to fix them when they malfunction. That brand new, shiny, fresh off the assembly line, fully equipped, High School diploma is not going to take you but so far down the road, even if you add a few extras, like a college degree or a friend in the business. True, there is still a significant need for that formal education, but in order to safely and meaningfully arrive at your final destination in life you need to have a "Masters" in common sense and a "PHD" in street knowledge. The book "Web of Confusion" breaks this down and simplifies it in a way that cannot be misunderstood by the youths of our society or their parents and educators. Not only does it give an inside look at "the game" it refocuses on the rules. The lyrics are raw, riveting and sometimes downright rude, but at the same time soaked with the truth. A unique harmony of old school and new school rhyming that will surely have a bit of appeal for everyone. The quiz hits the reader in the gut where it will most definitely leave an after taste, as well as in the head where is has a surprisingly stunning effect. The story delivers several messages which deal with what many consider to be the reasons for the collapse of our present day society The book purposely written with an abundance of bad pronunciation, many cleverly placed misspelled words and enough unorthodox punctuation to make this an easy read for any student no matter what his reading skills or grade level may be, while at the same time challenging those reading capabilities of the student as well as the teaching skills of the educator. The author takes into consideration that, for the ordinary student, contrary to popular belief, perfection is intimidation that often leads to a turn off. At the same time he gives proper respect to the art of "readin", "ritein" and "rithymatic For those of you who have been raised with paper thin skin, have a fear of real world discussion, or truly believe that the average teenager is interested in how J D Salinger .relates to their everyday lives. I would suggest you buy a copy of "Fifty Shades Of Gray" or re-read "Moby Dick", books which I consider to be much better written, more popular and forever destined to be classic best sellers. For the young adult, parent or educator who is satisfied with the direction that our culture is heading in or not satisfied but afraid of certain risk that question or challenge the status quo, I would not touch this book with a ten foot pole. For everyone else on the planet I recommend that you read the book, check out the lyrics and take the quiz, you won't be disappointed.
