Download or read book The Essential Cocktail written by Dale DeGroff and published by Clarkson Potter. This book was released on 2010-07-14 with total page 926 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dale DeGroff is widely regarded as the world’s foremost mixologist. Hailed by the New York Times as “single-handedly responsible for what’s been called the cocktail renaissance,” he earned this reputation during his twelve years at the fashionable Promenade Bar in New York City’s Rainbow Room. It was there in 1987 that he not only reintroduced the cocktail menu to the country but also began mixing drinks from scratch, using impeccably fresh ingredients instead of the widespread mixes used at the time. Known especially for crafting unique cocktails, reviving classics, and coaxing superior flavor from his ingredients, DeGroff has selected his 100 essential drinks and 100 of their best variations—including many of his signature cocktails—for this premier mixology guide. The Essential Cocktail features only those drinks that stand out for their flavor, interesting formula, or distinctive technique. These are the very ones every amateur and professional bartender must know, the martinis, sours, highballs, tropicals, punches, sweets, and classics, both old and new, that form the core of a connoisseur’s repertoire. Throughout the book are DeGroff’s personal twists, such as a tangy Grapefruit Julep or a refreshing Yuzu Gimlet. To complement the tantalizing photographs of each essential cocktail, DeGroff also regales readers with the fascinating lore behind a drink’s genesis and instructs us on using the right ingredients, techniques, glasses, and garnishes. As Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking was the classic compendium for home chefs and gourmands, so The Essential Cocktail will be the go-to book for serious mixologists and cocktail enthusiasts.

Book The Captain s Log

Download or read book The Captain s Log written by mateboer Hans and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2011 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cruise ships can be compared to small floating cities, and unlike their counterparts ashore, they actually move around. This makes them unique, as one day a ship can be found in Manhattan, and a few weeks later she could be in the South China Sea. This book is about 'normal' everyday people who sail on these ships, who just like their counterparts ashore do have their faults, their hopes and at times achieve their share of greatness. The captain sits at the top of the ships pyramid and if he listens well, hears most of what happens on board his ship. Shifting through the enormous pile of material, I decided to use almost exclusively stories which were funny to (almost) all involved.Every chapter you will read, truly happened. The characters, truly existed, although I did change names and ships around a bit. This book is a picture of my life and undoubtedly that of many others who have spend a considerable time at sea.

Book Shooting the Pacific War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thayer Soule
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2014-10-17
  • ISBN : 0813157307
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Shooting the Pacific War written by Thayer Soule and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thayer Soule couldn't believe his orders. As a junior officer with no military training or indoctrination and less than ten weeks of active duty behind him, he had been assigned to be photographic officer for the First Marine Division. The Corps had never had a photographic division before, much less a field photographic unit. But Soule accepted the challenge, created the unit from scratch, established policies for photography, and led his men into combat. Soule and his unit produced films and photos of training, combat action pictures, and later, terrain studies and photographs for intelligence purposes. Though he had never heard of a photo-litho set, he was in charge of using it for map production, which would prove vital to the division. Shooting the Pacific War is based on Soule's detailed wartime journals. Soule was in the unique position to interact with men at all levels of the military, and he provides intriguing closeups of generals, admirals, sergeants, and privates -everyone he met and worked with along the way. Though he witnessed the horror of war firsthand, he also writes of the vitality and intense comradeship that he and his fellow Marines experienced. Soule recounts the heat of battle as well as the intense training before and rebuilding after each campaign. He saw New Zealand in the desperate days of 1942. His division was rebuilt in Australia following Guadalcanal. After a stint back in Quantico training more combat photographers, he went to Guam and then to the crucible of Iwo Jima. At war's end he was serving as Photographic Officer, Fleet Marine Force Pacific, at Pearl Harbor.
