Download or read book William Sheppard Cromwell s Law Reformer written by Nancy L. Matthews and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-08 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a full account of Sheppard's employment under Oliver Cromwell's Protectorate as well as an examination of his family background and education, his religious commitment to John Owen's party of Independents and his legal philosophy. An appraisal of all Sheppard's legal works, including those written during the Civil War and the Restoration period, illustrates the overlapping concerns with law reform, religion and politics in his generation. Sheppard had impressively consistent goals for the reform of English law and his prescient proposals anticipate the reforms ultimately adopted in the nineteenth century, culminating in the Judicature Acts of 1875-8. Dr Matthews examines the relative importance of Sheppard's books to his generation and to legal literature in general. The study provides a full bibliography of Sheppard's legal and religious works and an appendix of the sources Sheppard used in the composition of his books on the law.

Download or read book Law for Non Law Students written by Keith Owens and published by Cavendish Publishing. This book was released on 2001-10-30 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law for Non-Law Students is written in a clear and readable style and aims to make the law understandable for readers at undergraduate or comparable level. It explains the practical influences under which the law has been formed,so that the student will be better able to understand why the law has developed in the way that it has. It gives lots of straightforward examples as to how the law works in practice and aims to equip students with the ability to appraise the effectiveness of the law in a particular circumstance rather than simply providing a list of rules for the student to regurgitate at exam time. The facts of the more important cases are given in some detail to enable the student to appreciate the range of factors which the court may have taken into account in reaching its decision. The new edition has been updated to take account of all recent developments, both in relation to statute and to case law. Certain chapters, particularly in the area of sale of goods, have been substantially rewritten and expanded in an attempt to give more detail, while at the same time remaining student-friendly. New chapters on Agency and Negligence have been added. brThis new edition should be suitable for most courses which have a law element.

Download or read book A History of the French in London written by Debra Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines, for the first time, the history of the social, cultural, political and economic presence of the French in London, and explores the multiple ways in which this presence has contributed to the life of the city. The capital has often provided a place of refuge, from the Huguenots in the 17th century, through the period of the French Revolution, to various exile communities during the 19th century, and on to the Free French in the Second World War.It also considers the generation of French citizens who settled in post-war London, and goes on to provide insights into the contemporary French presence by assessing the motives and lives of French people seeking new opportunities in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It analyses the impact that the French have had historically, and continue to have, on London life in the arts, gastronomy, business, industry and education, manifest in diverse places and institutions from the religious to the political via the educational, to the commercial and creative industries.
Download or read book Human Documents of the Industrial Revolution In Britain written by E. Royston pike and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2005. So many books have been written on the Industrial Revolution in Britain that it may be thought that there is hardly room for another. The present volume is an attempt to go some way towards filling what must surely appear to be a somewhat surprising gap in the literature. Its aim and purpose is to enable the men and women—and, let it be said, the children and young people—who lived in and through the Industrial Revolution in this country and who had their part, large or small, in its development and helped to give it direction and impetus, to describe their experiences in their own words. All the documents quoted are original documents, prepared and written and set down in print when the Revolution was actually going on.
