Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is to investigate competing explanations of the processes underlying associative recognition. Like recognition memory for individual items, associative recognition is currently understood through two different classes of model. The first is the single-process model class which holds that associative recognition decisions are based on a continuum of associative memory strength. The second is the dual-process model class, which holds that associative recognition decisions are based on two sources of information, called familiarity and recollection. Familiarity is conceptualised as a fast-acting, context-free 'feeling of knowing', while recollection is said to be a slower, more conscious process allowing for the recall of detail and context. Familiarity may play a role in associative recognition through a mechanism called unitisation, whereby two distinct stimuli are bound into a single individual memory trace. State-trace analysis is a method to determine the number of latent variables or processes that contribute to performance on a set of tasks, under mild assumptions. A critical diagnostic feature is the dimensionality of the state-trace plot - a plot of performance on one dependent variable against the other. If associative recognition depends on a single latent variable then manipulation of experimental factors affecting memory should result in a unidimensional state-trace plot. If associative recognition depends on two or more latent variables which are differentially affected by the experimental factors then a bidimensional state-trace will result. State-trace analysis therefore provides a method of discriminating a class of single-process models from a class of dual-process models. State-trace analysis was applied to associative recognition in four experiments. Each experiment utilised two independent variables that previous research had suggested could differentially affect familiarity and recollection. Experiment 1 investigated associative recognition of word pairs by manipulating attention and study presentation frequency. Experiments 2 investigated associative recognition of word pairs under conditions designed to encourage unitisation by pairing an encoding-based unitisation manipulation with a working memory load manipulation. Experiment 3 manipulated the same unitisation instructions as well as varying study time. Experiment 4 examined the effect of unitisation using pairs of faces and manipulated visual similarity and study time. State-trace analysis of the four experiments consistently revealed unidimensional state-trace plots. Using a recently developed monotonic regression statistical test, unidimensionality could not be rejected at either aggregate or individual participant level. Therefore, no evidence was found for the differential activation of familiarity and recollection in associative recognition. The results of this thesis are therefore consistent with a single-process account of associative recognition. These results also pose a challenge to dual-process models to identify alternate experimental manipulations that reveal the involvement of different component processes such as recollection and unitized familiarity.

Book excerpt: A powerful theoretical framework for exploring recognition memory is the global matching framework, in which a cue's memory strength reflects the similarity of the retrieval cues being matched against all of the contents of memory simultaneously. Contributions at retrieval can be categorized as matches and mismatches to the item and context cues, including the self match (match on item and context), item noise (match on context, mismatch on item), context noise (match on item, mismatch on context), and background noise (mismatch on item and context). I present a model that directly parameterizes the matches and mismatches to the item and context cues, which enables estimation of the magnitude of each interference contribution (item noise, context noise, and background noise). The model was fit within a hierarchical Bayesian framework to ten recognition memory datasets that employ manipulations of strength, list length, list strength, word frequency, study-test delay, and stimulus class in item and associative recognition. Estimates of the model parameters revealed at most a small contribution of item noise that varies by stimulus class, with virtually no item noise for single words and scenes. Despite the unpopularity of background noise in recognition memory models, background noise estimates dominated at retrieval across nearly all stimulus classes with the exception of high frequency words, which exhibited equivalent levels of context noise and background noise. These parameter estimates suggest that the majority of interference in recognition memory stems from experiences acquired prior to the learning episode.

Questions about these ways have occupied philosophers and metaphysicians for centuries. During the early growth of cognitive science the problem of consciousness remained taboo, but an increasing number of studies have either implicitly or explicitly begun to bear on its nature. These have been inspired by a number of different different original questions, and focus on a variety of different empirical phenomena. Thus, studies of implicit memory, subliminal processing, strategic versus automatic processing, allocation of attention, and differences between information processes in the awake versus dreaming state all share a common assumption of a particular quality or state -- awakeness, awareness, alertness, namely consciousness -- that somehow can be distinguished from another type of state or states in which the subject is not aware of the information being processed. What distinguishes the cognitive psychological and cognitive neuroscience approach to the question of consciousness from that of philosophy and metaphysics is scientific methodology: a set of tools that permit the empirical study of a phenomenon in an objective and reproducible way. Book excerpt: Eyeblink classical conditioning (EBC) is a model paradigm for associative (also termed Pavlovian) learning, one of the simplest and best understood forms of learning and memory. Because EBC paradigms are readily adapted across species, the neural substrates of EBC have been well characterized, and include but are not limited to the cerebellum and anterior interpositus nucleus, the hippocampus, and prefrontal cortices. The ability to collect EBC data across many different species (i.e. including but not limited to humans) also has the distinct advantage of facilitating translational research, and therefore may be of particular benefit to elucidate mechanistic changes associated with a wide variety of psychiatric disorders. In fact, EBC paradigms have been employed to assess individuals with a wide range of neurological deficits (including Korsakoff’s amnesia, Alzheimer's disease as well as normal aging, dyslexia, inflammatory tremor, dystonia, and multiple sclerosis) and psychiatric disorders (including major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, autism, and alcohol use/addiction disorders). Individuals with these disorders exhibit differential impairments across different EBC task types (e.g., delay vs. trace EBC), with some showing impairment in one but not the other task and some showing impairments in both; across learning stage (e.g., acquisition, discrimination, or extinction), and across response variables (e.g., magnitude and timing of the conditioned eyeblink motor response, modality of the conditioned stimulus). Evaluating specific individual differences in the context of variable brain pathology should aid characterization and refinement of our understanding of complex neuropsychiatric disorders. The field of psychiatry has seen a transition from more traditional use of symptom clusters to define psychiatric disorders with subsequent examination of associated behaviors and traits, to the use of physiological and behavioral indicators to characterize individuals with respect to various psychological domains [in line with the National Institute of Mental Health Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative]. This approach employs a neuroscience-based framework to assess the pathophysiology of chronic mental illnesses. Behavioral and cognitive processes are critical domains of interest in evaluating potential maladaptive patterns that may be indicative of specific psychopathologies. Furthermore, the rapid development of technological advances that allow for more detailed examination (e.g., EEG, MEG, MRI, fMRI, infrared imaging) and manipulation (e.g. transcranial magnetic and direct current stimulation) of brain functions should enhance our ability to better characterize EBC performance and its utility in characterizing aspects of particular neuropathologies. Substantial research evidence exists for the value of EBC paradigms to inform our understanding of the pathophysiologies underlying a wide variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Despite these findings, this readily implemented classic cognitive-behavioral paradigm is relatively underutilized in clinical settings. This e-book highlights recent convergence of clinical and research efforts in this area and aims to promote a resurgent interest in eyeblink classical conditioning, and to emphasize the potential for future translational and diagnostic applications of EBC in combination with other techniques to strengthen our understanding of alterations in brain function manifested in behaviors characteristic of specific psychopathologies.
