Book A Survey of State level Involvement in Distance Education at the Elementary and Secondary Levels

Download or read book A Survey of State level Involvement in Distance Education at the Elementary and Secondary Levels written by Richard England and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is at present an unusually high degree of interest among educators and educational policy makers in the possibilities of improving and expanding elementary and secondary education by incorporating some forms of distance education into traditional schooling. However, no procedures and little funding have been provided for research to find out what issues states consider important, what policies they have implemented or intend to implement, or what the opinions are among policy makers about the future of distance education in the schools. An issue raised by the Office of Technology Assessment in 1989 ("Linking for Learning: A New Course for Education") has to do with the certification of teachers involved in distance education programs, as the teacher certification process varies from state to state, and at times among universities and colleges within a particular state. A survey of chief state school officers in the United States, including the District of Columbia, was conducted in 1990 for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (APB), Organization of State Broadcast Executives (OSBE), and the Southern Educational Communications Association (SECA). Questions were asked regarding state-level involvement in distance education and teacher certification issues. Responses from 41 states (response rate 80%) provided an overview of activity and opinion. These responses are discussed in the context of individual questions in each of the two areas, and it is concluded that, although there is a continuing need for research and education of policymakers, the majority of states appear to recognize the opportunities that exist for distance education through telecommunications, and that they are exploring ways to make education more available through technology. Responses from the individual states to each of nine questions are tabulated in the appendix. (Contains 7 references.) (ALF)

Book The Role of Technology in Distance Education Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Role of Technology in Distance Education Routledge Revivals written by Tony Bates and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1984, provides a comprehensive review of the range of technology that was being used in distance education. Technological developments in word processing, video-disc and viewdata as well as computer-based learning had revolutionised the potential for distance education. These developments required the role of more ’conventional’ distance learning media, such as broadcasting, tuition and text, to be reassessed. This book, written by international experts in the field, explored the state of the art at the time, and also provided their ideas on how future developments were likely to evolve. This book is ideal for those studying education and communications.

Book The New Digital Education Policy Landscape

Download or read book The New Digital Education Policy Landscape written by Cristóbal Cobo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-16 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a scholarly investigation of the new era we have entered, in which platforms can replace or profoundly modify educational systems, and questions the role of educational policy in this new stage of platform-based digital technology. The contributors explore important questions around who controls these transformations, what form they are taking, what the balance between national education policies and Big Tech education solutions should be, as well as whether there should be a public platform in every education system that digitally expands learning, and what evidence there is that learning will be more efficient using these platforms. The first part provides a selection of empirical studies on the new digital educational policy, and an analysis of the real opportunities and concerns that governments face in this regard, while the second offers reflections on the processes of platformization and the role of the state in this new digital world. Uniquely examining the temporal evolution of these changes and taking a theoretical, political, and epistemological approach, it crucially opens pathways for dialogical and diverse critical thinking about profound problems and possibilities. Gathering purposeful thinking that creates space for design solutions and rethinking educational systems considering these new technological artefacts, it will appeal to researchers and specialists in the fields of educational technology and educational policy.

Book The Promise and the Power of Distance Learning in Rural Education Policy Brief

Download or read book The Promise and the Power of Distance Learning in Rural Education Policy Brief written by Vicki Hobbs and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rapidly growing number of rural students are increasingly involved in some form of distance learning for all or part of the school day (or night). The precise long-term impact of distance learning technologies on schooling will not be known for several years. But this paper embraces the likelihood that distance learning will revolutionize the concept of 'schooling'--not by abandoning schools and individualizing and isolating students in the process, but rather by enhancing individual and class educational opportunities most often in the context of a school. It focuses on the applicability and potential of two-way interactive television for small and rural K-12 schools as a primary asset in improving educational access and equity and calls for the adoption of enlightened distance learning policies and guidelines at the state and local levels. The following are appended: (1) Characteristics of Major Distance Learning Technologies; (2) Types of Distance Learning Technologies; and (3) a Categorization of State Videoconferencing Policies. A glossary is also included. (Contains 2 tables and 27 endnotes.).
