Book The State of the Marine Environment

Download or read book The State of the Marine Environment written by and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2006 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides an overview of the current state of the coastal and marine environment in relation to the nine categories of threats outlined by the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA). The report indicates that legal and institutional arrangements have been strengthened and now cover most regions of the world, but that despite these heightened efforts globally, coastal and marine ecosystems continue to deteriorate mainly because of pressures by human development. Publishing Agency: United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Book Marine Specially Protected Area The General Aspects and the Mediterranean Regional System

Download or read book Marine Specially Protected Area The General Aspects and the Mediterranean Regional System written by Tullio Scovazzi and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years several States have established specially protected marine areas under their domestic legislation. At the international level the trend towards providing an increased protection to certain marine spaces has also been reflected in a number of treaties and declarations. This volume reviews the recent developments in the field of specially protected marine areas and preservation of the marine environment in general with particular emphasis on a specific region, the Mediterranean Sea. Special attention is devoted to the latter for three reasons. First, the regional framework for the protection of the environment in the Mediterranean (the so-called Barcelona system) has recently been updated and strengthened. Second, the Mediterranean is a typical example of the category of semi-enclosed seas where international cooperation between the bordering States should be particularly encouraged in various fields; this also explains why the scope of this book has been enlarged to also cover fisheries, a field which is closely connected to the sustainable development of marine areas. Last and least, the parochial inclination of the editor also influenced his choice. To complete the picture the relevant texts have been reproduced and a series of maps showing some specially protected marine areas have been drawn.

Book Oil Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea Part II

Download or read book Oil Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea Part II written by Angela Carpenter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-27 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reviews the oil inputs to the Mediterranean Sea from sources such as shipping, offshore oil installations, and oil refineries, presented in a number of national case studies. A regional overview is also presented for the Adriatic Sea. Topics include mapping of oil slicks in the Adriatic, oil exploration and exploitation activities in the waters of the Levantine Basin (Eastern Mediterranean), the oil pollution preparedness and response activities of individual Mediterranean states, bilateral and regional cooperation among the various states, and the risk of pollution from shipping in sensitive sea areas, for example. Together with the companion volume Oil Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea: Part I - The International Context, it addresses both national and international measures in the region, making it of relevance to the agencies and government bodies tasked with remediating or preventing oil pollution, as well as policymakers and practitioners in the fields of shipping, ports and terminals, oil extraction and marine management. It provides researchers with essential reference material on tools and techniques for monitoring oil pollution, and constitutes a valuable resource for undergraduate and post-graduate students in the field of marine oil pollution.

Book Priority Issues in the Mediterranean Environment

Download or read book Priority Issues in the Mediterranean Environment written by European Environment Agency and published by European Environment Agency. This book was released on 2006 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report aims to identify priority pollution zones and emerging issues in the Mediterranean Sea. The report does not attempt to give an overall state of the Mediterranean marine environment. Instead it addresses specific issues which are of main concern to the sustainable development of the region: sewage and urban run-off; solid waste; industrial effluents including oil processing; urbanization; eutrophication; sand erosion; marine transport causing oil pollution; biological invasions; harmful algal blooms; exploitation of marine resources; expansion of aquaculture; natural hazards. The main problems in southern and eastern Mediterranean countries are the inadequate treatment of urban waste and management of chemicals in contrast to northern countries where efforts should be deployed to overcome the problems raised by use of chemicals and their impacts on environment. In the northern Mediterranean region, which is the most industrialised, there are a priori necessary prevention mechanisms, correction technologies and the appropriate legal framework. But there is a lack of political willingness from the countries to enforce environmental regulation. The southern Mediterranean region is growing at the expense of the environment since neither the economic conditions nor the required technologies are available. The number one priority in environmental management in the Mediterranean region is to develop the necessary environmental legislation and to enforce it.

Book Strategies and Advanced Techniques for Marine Pollution Studies

Download or read book Strategies and Advanced Techniques for Marine Pollution Studies written by C.S. Giam and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinction between contamination and pollution is useful when we wish to consider what strategies to adopt in researching the impact of anthropogenic activities on the marine environment. Contamination strictly refers to the chemical burden imposed on the system and is evaluated in terms of the concentrations of chemical compounds in various abiotic (e. g water, suspended particulate matter, sediments) and biotic (plant and animal, pelagic and benthic) components. The concept of pollution, on the other hand, infers an assessment of biological response to the measured levels of contamination. This response may be measured at various levels of biological organisation, from molecular events within the cell to changes in such ecosystem properties as nutrient flux and biological productivity. Such measures of biological response need not infer any value judgements regarding putative damage or disturbance to the natural systems, although the biologist will usually have in mind a reference point of normality with which to compare the measured response; departure from this "normality" may then provide a quantitiative index of disturbance. The challenge to scientists engaged in research into marine contamination and pollution is to weld the chemical and biological elements together (always with reference also to the physical features of the environment) so as to provide a coherent framework for the quantitative evaluation of environmental response.
