Book USDA Report on Water and Related Land Resources Central Lahontan Basin Walker River Subbasin Nevada California

Download or read book USDA Report on Water and Related Land Resources Central Lahontan Basin Walker River Subbasin Nevada California written by United States. USDA Nevada River Basin Survey Staff and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The objective of the Walker River Subbasin Report is to contribute to comprehensive planning for the coordinated and orderly development, management, and use of water and related land resources of the subbasin. It is anticipated that the information presented in this report will: (1) identify the present and potential land and water problems and opportunities for solving them; (2) provide a basis for more effective coordination of U.S. Department of Agriculture resource programs with the related activities of each State and with other Federal agencies; (3) provide a sound basis for the development of water and related land resources by means of Public Law 566 projects for other programs; (4) indicate opportunities for development of water resources and the rehabilitation of depleted watersheds and rangelands of the national forest and public domain, as part of the multiple use programs for these Federal lands. This subbasin report includes: (1) an inventory of the natural resources; (2) an analysis of economic development; (3) a definition of the causes and extent of the resource problems; (4) an indication of present and future needs for resource development; (5) a short discussion of existing resource projects and programs; (6) a description of the resource development potential; (7) an indication of the opportunities for development under U.S. Department of Agriculture programs; and (8) suggested future programs and coordination needs among all groups and agencies. The natural resource inventory was supplemented by a detailed reconnaissance soil survey covering the subbasin. The results of the survey produced a broad but comprehensive summation of the subbasin's most basic resource, along with an interpretative tabulation of the hazards, limitations, and potentials for its use"--Page 1.

Book Improving Water Quality in the Mississippi River Basin and Northern Gulf of Mexico

Download or read book Improving Water Quality in the Mississippi River Basin and Northern Gulf of Mexico written by Committee on Clean Water Act Implementation Across the Mississippi River Basin and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most water resources managers, scientists, and other experts would agree that nonpoint source pollution is a more pressing and challenging national water quality problem today than point source pollution. Nonpoint sources of pollutants include parking lots, farm fields, forests, or any source not from a discrete conveyance such as a pipe or canal. Of particular concern across the Mississippi River basin (MRB) are high levels of nutrient loadings--nitrogen and phosphorus--from both nonpoint and point sources that ultimately are discharged into the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM). Nutrients emanate from both point and nonpoint sources across the river basin, but the large majority of nutrient yields across the MRB are nonpoint in nature and are associated with agricultural activities, especially applications of nitrogen-based fertilizers and runoff from concentrated animal feeding operations. Improving Water Quality in the Mississippi River Basin and Northern Gulf of Mexico offers strategic advice and priorities for addressing MRB and NGOM water quality management and improvements. Although there is considerable uncertainty as to whether national water quality goals can be fully realized without some fundamental changes to the CWA, there is general agreement that significant progress can be made under existing statutory authority and budgetary processes. This book includes four sections identifying priority areas and offering recommendations to EPA and others regarding priority actions for Clean Water Act implementation across the Mississippi River basin. These sections are: USDA's Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative; Numeric Water Quality Criteria for the northern Gulf of Mexico; A Basinwide Strategy for Nutrient Management and Water Quality; and, Stronger Leadership and Collaboration.

Book Great Basin Region Comprehensive Framework Study Main Report

Download or read book Great Basin Region Comprehensive Framework Study Main Report written by Great Basin Region State--Federal Interagency Group and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is prepared in accordance with guidelines, objectives and projections set forth by the Water Resources Council which is directing a national effort toward regional comprehensive framework planning. It includes the main report and 16 supporting appendixes. Estimated requirements for water and related land resources within the Region are based on an assigned portion of a set of national projections of March 1968 developed by the Office of Business Economics, U.S. Department of Commerce and Economic Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. This study evaluates the adequacy of water and related land resources in the Great Basin Region to meet these projected requirements through selected time frames to 2020. The resultant program considered with framework plans of the other Regions, permits a general evaluation of the national capacity to meet projected requirements for water and related land resources for the next 50 years.

Book Colorado River Basin Water Management

Download or read book Colorado River Basin Water Management written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies of past climate and streamflow conditions have broadened understanding of long-term water availability in the Colorado River, revealing many periods when streamflow was lower than at any time in the past 100 years of recorded flows. That information, along with two important trends-a rapid increase in urban populations in the West and significant climate warming in the region-will require that water managers prepare for possible reductions in water supplies that cannot be fully averted through traditional means. Colorado River Basin Water Management assesses existing scientific information, including temperature and streamflow records, tree-ring based reconstructions, and climate model projections, and how it relates to Colorado River water supplies and demands, water management, and drought preparedness. The book concludes that successful adjustments to new conditions will entail strong and sustained cooperation among the seven Colorado River basin states and recommends conducting a comprehensive basinwide study of urban water practices that can be used to help improve planning for future droughts and water shortages.
