Book excerpt: This study presents the historical background and details of the Kyoto Protocol, its flexible mechanisms, and carbon markets. As the carbon market appears to be the most visible result of regulatory efforts to mitigate climate change, this study provides comprehensive reviews of the operation of the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), the Clean Development Mechanism, the Joint Implementation and also other segments of the global carbon market. It appears that the existing several carbon markets mostly operate in isolation from each other, which leads to a fragmented global carbon market. This analysis suggests that improving the competitive conditions of carbon markets and increasing the substitutability of project-based credits for allowances can develop the integration of the markets. Potential improvements may include providing greater availability of credits within the EU ETS, providing greater clarity and simplicity of the EU ETS's rules regarding the use and the import of project-based credits, providing greater coordination between the EU ETS and the Kyoto mechanisms, and providing greater harmonization in regulatory frameworks.

Book excerpt: 'State and Trends of the Carbon Market 2004' examines the status of the emerging market for greenhouse gases emissions allowances and greenhouse gases emission reduction projectsthe so-called "carbon market". Based on a database of 354 transactions, this study shows that the market has been growing steadily over the past years, with demand still heavily concentrated and supply shifting from Latin America to Asia. It also explores the determinants of the price of carbon, showing that, in the absence of a standard contract for the purchase of emission reductions, the structure of the transaction has a strong impact on the price.This study finds that the carbon market is growing steadily. A total of 64 million metric tones of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) has been exchanged through projects from January to May 2004, nearly as much as during the whole year 2003 (78 million). Second, the demand for emission reductions remains heavily concentrated, with a few EU Governments and Japanese firms the largest buyers. Third, Asia is now the largest supplier of emission reductions, followed by Latin America, developed economies, and Eastern Europe. Last, prices of project-based emission reductions in early 2004 have remained essentially stable compared with 2003. In the absence of a standard contract, these prices strongly depend on the structure of the transaction, notably risk-sharing between buyers and sellers.

Book excerpt: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), a framework created by the Kyoto Protocol, was an attempt to link the carbon market and sustainable development objectives in developing countries. Consequently, sequestered carbon is now a globally traded commodity with a huge potential to provide economic returns to land manager. Unlike traditional development models based on deferred and diffused benefit streams, the new carbon-market model offers an opportunity to directly link land management and natural resource conservation with specific and immediate market incentives. Analysis shows that carbon markets can serve a catalytic function in stimulating increased tree planting and improved forest management, thus helping to realize the multiple benefits of forestry and agro-forestry systems. In recent years opportunities for participation in carbon credit trading markets have been growing. The Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) now boasts more than six million trades per month. A recent summary of the "State and Trends of the Carbon Market 2006" prepared for the World Bank's BioCarbon Fund, reports a rapid increase in corporate participation in the carbon market. This book focuses on the concept of CDM and other forestry based Carbon finance mechanisms introduced by UNFCCC and its impact on carbon markets. It also presents a brief analysis of the growth of carbon market in India, its present status and prospects in future. It provides a detailed account of Afforestation and Reforestation CDM Projects including the A/R Project Designed Document by UNFCCC in a simplified yet compact manner for better understanding of the procedure as a reference guide.
