Book Environmental Law and Governance in the Pacific

Download or read book Environmental Law and Governance in the Pacific written by Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines environmental law and governance in the Pacific, focusing on the emerging challenges this region faces. The Pacific is home to some of the world’s most astonishing biological and cultural diversity. At the same time, Pacific Island nations are economically and technically under-resourced in the face of tremendous environmental challenges. Destructive weather events, ocean acidification, mining, logging, overfishing, and pollution increasingly degrade ecosystems and affect fishing, farming, and other cultural practices of Pacific Islanders. Accordingly, there is an urgent need to understand and analyse the role of law and governance in responding to these pressures in the Pacific. Drawing on academic and practitioner expertise from the Pacific region, as well as Europe and the United States, this unique collection navigates the major environmental law and governance challenges of the present and future of the Pacific. Environmental Law and Governance in the Pacific discusses 21 Pacific Island countries and territories, including Cook Islands, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Samoa, and a broad range of themes, such as deep-sea mining, wetlands and mangroves, heritage, endangered species, human rights, and access to justice, are addressed, thus providing a comprehensive and state-of-the-art overview of environmental law and governance within specific jurisdictions as well as across the Pacific region as a whole. This volume will be essential reading for students and scholars interested in environmental law and governance in the Pacific region, as well as policy-makers, practitioners and NGOs involved in the development and implementation of environmental law and policy.

Book Marine Protected Areas in the Republic of Palau

Download or read book Marine Protected Areas in the Republic of Palau written by John Duncan Gavitt and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The republic of Palau depends heavily on its marine resources for tourism, foreign fishing contracts, local markets and subsistence. Unfortunately, over-exploitation and other detrimental human activities have resulted in a downward trend for certain populations of fish and other marine life during the past two decades. To help address local resource management concerns, several Marine Protected Areas (MPA's) have been established throughout the Republic. These MPA's, which often protect important fish migration routes or spawning grounds, range from 1 sq km in Airai State to the 163 sq km Helen Reef in Hatohobei State. However, many MPAs suffer from poorly written legislation, weak compliance with regulations and/or inadequate enforcement. Palau is also in need of a system of protected areas with national biodiversity issues in mind"--P. 1.

Book The Pacific Insular Case of American S moa

Download or read book The Pacific Insular Case of American S moa written by Line-Noue Memea Kruse and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a researched study of land issues in American Sāmoa that analyzes the impact of U.S. colonialism and empire building in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Carefully tracing changes in land laws up to the present, this volume also draws on a careful examination of legal traditions, administrative decisions, court cases and rising tensions between indigenous customary land tenure practices in American Sāmoa and Western notions of individual private ownership. It also highlights how unusual the status of American Sāmoa is in its relationship with the U.S., namely as the only “unincorporated” and “unorganized” overseas territory, and aims to expand the U.S. empire-building scholarship to include and recognize American Sāmoa into the vernacular of Americanization projects.
