Book Readings Cases in State and Local Politics

Download or read book Readings Cases in State and Local Politics written by Richard A. Clucas and published by Wadsworth. This book was released on 2005-03-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reader is designed to illustrate specific themes within government. Readings and Cases juxtaposes selected texts from scholarly literature with case studies from popular publications to first define the concept at hand, then to illustrate how the concept is applied in contemporary society. Each of the sixteen chapters follows a user-friendly structure. First, a major topic within the study of state and local politics is introduced, followed by two readings culled from outside sources, and concluding with a concise summary highlighting the salient points introduced. The result is one text that examines major themes in both a classic and contemporary context. Chapter introductions present a brief statement from the author that explains the connection between the reading and case study. Headnotes introduce each reading and indicate how the selection relates to the chapter's overall theme. Chapter review questions and suggestions for further reading are featured in the end-of-chapter pedagogy. A topic correlation chart is included to help instructors structure their course and assign appropriate readings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to voting, taxes, environmental regulations, social services, education, criminal justice, political parties, property rights, gun control, marriage and a whole host of other modern American issues, the state in which a citizen resides makes a difference. That idea—that the political decisions made by those in state-level offices are of tremendous importance to the lives of people whose states they govern—is the fundamental concept explored in this book. Gary F. Moncrief and Peverill Squire introduce students to the very tangible and constantly evolving implications, limitations, and foundations of America’s state political institutions, and accessibly explain the ways that the political powers of the states manifest themselves in the cultures, economies, and lives of everyday Americans, and always will.

Book The Power of American Governors

Download or read book The Power of American Governors written by Thad Kousser and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With limited authority over state lawmaking, but ultimate responsibility for the performance of government, how effective are governors in moving their programs through the legislature? This book advances a new theory about what makes chief executives most successful and explores this theory through original data. Thad Kousser and Justin H. Phillips argue that negotiations over the budget, on the one hand, and policy bills on the other are driven by fundamentally different dynamics. They capture these dynamics in models informed by interviews with gubernatorial advisors, cabinet members, press secretaries and governors themselves. Through a series of novel empirical analyses and rich case studies, the authors demonstrate that governors can be powerful actors in the lawmaking process, but that what they're bargaining over – the budget or policy – shapes both how they play the game and how often they can win it.

Book excerpt: The use of ice on board smaller fishing vessels is increasing, due to factors such as the growing demand for fresh fish, market globalisation and increased quality controls, and the decrease in near-shore fish resources which forces fisherman to make longer fishing trips and use ice to preserve the freshness of their catch.
