Book excerpt: Written for students with basic experience in college algebra and applied calculus, Fundamentals of Statistical Thinking: Tools and Applications familiarizes readers with fundamental concepts in statistical thinking in order to prepare them for specialized management courses such as econometrics and quantitative analysis. The book is organized into four sections, each of which focuses on a common tool used in application. Chapters 1 through 4 discuss data analysis and summaries, with an emphasis on descriptive statistics and visualization. In Chapters 5 through 8 students learn about probability models and sampling distributions. Chapters 9 and 10 deal with statistical inferences, while Chapters 11 and 12 provide further applications for categorical data and simple linear regression models. Graphical illustrations support the written text and each chapter concludes with a visual summary. Rooted in over ten years of classroom experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, Fundamentals of Statistical Thinking helps readers understand the importance of the main technical tools of statistical decision making, and explains when they can most appropriately be used for applied studies.

Book Statistical Thinking from Scratch

Download or read book Statistical Thinking from Scratch written by M. D. Edge and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers across the natural and social sciences find themselves navigating tremendous amounts of new data. Making sense of this flood of information requires more than the rote application of formulaic statistical methods. The premise of Statistical Thinking from Scratch is that students who want to become confident data analysts are better served by a deep introduction to a single statistical method than by a cursory overview of many methods. In particular, this book focuses on simple linear regression-a method with close connections to the most important tools in applied statistics-using it as a detailed case study for teaching resampling-based, likelihood-based, and Bayesian approaches to statistical inference. Considering simple linear regression in depth imparts an idea of how statistical procedures are designed, a flavour for the philosophical positions one assumes when applying statistics, and tools to probe the strengths of one's statistical approach. Key to the book's novel approach is its mathematical level, which is gentler than most texts for statisticians but more rigorous than most introductory texts for non-statisticians. Statistical Thinking from Scratch is suitable for senior undergraduate and beginning graduate students, professional researchers, and practitioners seeking to improve their understanding of statistical methods across the natural and social sciences, medicine, psychology, public health, business, and other fields.

Book Statistical Thinking for Managers

Download or read book Statistical Thinking for Managers written by David K. Hildebrand and published by South-Western College. This book was released on 1998 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the analysis of data using modern statistical and spreadsheet software, Hildebrand and Ott emphasize making sense of data and discuss not only how a statistical method is applied, but why and why not. Throughout the book, the authors integrate computer use into the development of statistical concepts, emphasizing the value of looking at data to make sure the right questions are being asked. The real-life applications and examples throughout challenge students to think like managers. The case that concludes every chapter asks students to deal with a relatively unstructured situation and to explain the statistical reasoning in nontechnical language. Modern statistical methods, including resampling and bootstrapping are included. In addition, the authors emphasize quality control and improvement throughout the book and include three full chapters on regression and correlation methods.

Book The Rise of Statistical Thinking 1820 1900

Download or read book The Rise of Statistical Thinking 1820 1900 written by Theodore M. Porter and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential work on the origins of statistics The Rise of Statistical Thinking, 1820–1900 explores the history of statistics from the field's origins in the nineteenth century through to the factors that produced the burst of modern statistical innovation in the early twentieth century. Theodore Porter shows that statistics was not developed by mathematicians and then applied to the sciences and social sciences. Rather, the field came into being through the efforts of social scientists, who saw a need for statistical tools in their examination of society. Pioneering statistical physicists and biologists James Clerk Maxwell, Ludwig Boltzmann, and Francis Galton introduced statistical models to the sciences by pointing to analogies between their disciplines and the social sciences. A new preface by the author looks at how the book has remained relevant since its initial publication, and considers the current place of statistics in scientific research.

Book A Quick Review of Statistical Thinking Third Edition

Download or read book A Quick Review of Statistical Thinking Third Edition written by Richard Wielkiewicz and published by . This book was released on 2020-10 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Quick Review of Statistical Thinking (QRST) is for students who need to quickly become familiar with the content of a typical introductory statistics course as they conduct their own research, begin an honors thesis, take advanced statistics courses, review for the MCAT, or start graduate school. QRST covers the main topics in a typical undergraduate statistics course. The only computation covered is the standard deviation. My goal was to condense the typical undergraduate statistics course into a book that could be quickly reviewed. Electronic publishing was chosen to save paper and for cost effectiveness. Each chapter ends with an exercise or quiz, with an answer key, to test your understanding of concepts. Chapter 8 explains how to use IBM SPSS Statistics software (SPSS) to perform statistical analyses covered in the typical undergraduate course and some additional procedures that researchers will find useful such as recodes, reliability, data transformations, and multiple regression. Examples of reporting the results in articles or papers are also provided. Instructors of advanced statistics and research methods courses will find that QRST can be used as a text in the first week to review or cover basic introductory statistics. QRST would also make a good companion text in a course that combines research methods and statistics. This book has two important help features. First, the detailed table of contents can be used to jump directly to any section of the book. Second, the book includes a glossary. Words defined in the glossary are printed in bold the first time they are used in the text. The third edition of QRST was edited extensively. The main changes are to Chapters 3, 6, and 8. These chapters now cover the essentials of confidence intervals and related statistical issues such as meta-analysis.
