Book Family Focused Treatment for Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Download or read book Family Focused Treatment for Child and Adolescent Mental Health written by Paul Sunseri and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as a treatment manual for using family-based treatments with children struggling with mental illness, supporting both family therapists and the families they are helping. Based on over 40 years of research, it has been shown that involving the entire family in treatment is effective. However, family therapy is still not used as a first line of treatment. Paul Sunseri explains and explores why family-based approaches should be used with struggling young people and how this can be applied in practice. Chapters discuss the causes, contributors, and social determinants for the rise in childhood mental illness and provide empirical evidence and treatments for working with children and adolescents suffering from self-harm, suicidal ideation, anxiety, anger, and depression. Filled with case studies throughout, the book also touches on mitigating the effects of screen time in our increasingly technological lives and interventions to help reluctant children participate in therapy. This book will be invaluable reading for graduate-level students, clinicians in training, and fully licensed clinicians, such as psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists, and clinical social workers. The book is also a practical resource for parents and other caregivers; it pulls back the curtain on therapy and teaches parents exactly what to do to best love and support their child at a time when they need it the most.

Download or read book Learning to Care written by Robert Wuthnow and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-11-02 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urgent calls have gone forth--from the White House and Congress, from schools, churches, synagogues, and other agencies--for Americans to become more involved in caring for the needy and in serving their communities. And as federal and state governments across the nation cut back on aid to the poor and disabled, the role of volunteerism can only grow in importance. But how can we inspire caring behavior in our young when so many adults seem indifferent to the problems of the needy, when many problems (such as homelessness) seem beyond individual effort, and when agencies often come under fire for ineffectiveness if not corruption? Drawing on deeply moving personal accounts from young people who have become involved in community service, as well as on data from recent national surveys, Learning to Care looks at why teenagers become involved in volunteer work, what problems and pressures they face, and what we can do to nurture caring in our youth. Robert Wuthnow's intimate interviews bring to life the stories of high school student volunteers, teenagers such as Tanika Lane, a freshman who works with Literacy Education and Direction (LEAD), a job-training program for inner-city kids, and Amy Stone, a homecoming queen and student-body president at a suburban southern school who organizes rallies for AIDS awareness. Through these profiles, Wuthnow shows that caring is not innate but learned, in part from the spontaneous warmth of family life, and in part from finding the right kind of volunteer work. He contends that volunteers' sense of service is shaped by what they find in school service clubs, in shelters for the homeless, in working with AIDS victims, or in tutoring inner-city children. And Wuthnow also argues that the best environment to nurture the helping impulse is the religious setting, where in fact the great bulk of volunteering in America takes place. In these organizations, as well as in schools and community agencies, teenagers can find the role models and moral incentives that will instill a sense of service that they can then carry into their adult life. Robert Wuthnow is one of our leading commentators on religious life in America, the author of Acts of Compassion, which was nominated for both a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award. Learning to Care, the sequel to that highly acclaimed volume, offers an eye-opening (and somewhat reassuring) portrait of volunteerism among America's youth, as it helps lay the groundwork for teaching our children to care.

Book Boyhood Impressions

Download or read book Boyhood Impressions written by Phillip Eldridge Williams and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in a poor family, a poor community, and a poor state is no unusual set of circumstances that has produced many positive and unfortunate outcomes in the lives of people everywhere. What is rare is to have these never-ending hardships remembered in detail with an innocence that makes one wonder why such an obvious lack of resentment, but this is precisely what the author has done. How this was achieved is due to an innate drive to overcome and a conviction that surely this is not the way growing up need be. No matter the depth of depravity, there are assets that can be taken advantage of. With maybe just a little more than average intelligence, and exceptional physical coordination that included the ability to run fast, a deprived father’s sports background, and a wonder and curiosity that developed out of necessity and a love for nature, Williams left for the military life that ultimately answered many of these deep questions that even the Creek Bank School of Learning could not provide answers to.
