Now after two years hiding as a ship hand, she is finally returning to her beloved home...but not in the way she imagined. Shackled by bounty hunters, she is violently dragged back to account for her crimes. Her only solace is that the Banshee crew managed to evade capture, including Kane Arric, her best friend...with occasional benefits. Meanwhile, Kane and the rest of the crew of the Banshee plan a desperate rescue mission. But when they arrive on Eturia, Cassia isn't exactly in need of heroics--she's claimed her birthright as Eturia's queen, but has inherited a war-torn planet simmering with rebellion. Cassia must make alliances, and Kane, the bastard son of a merchant, isn't a choice that will earn her any friends. Kane knows he will never find someone to replace Cassia--and is certain she returns his feelings--but how can he throw away his own promising future waiting on a queen? When the outer realm is threatened by the dangerous Zhang mafia, Cassia, Kane and the rest of the Banshee crew uncover a horrifying conspiracy that endangers the entire universe. In the face of unspeakable evil, Cassia must confront her own family's complicated legacy on Eturia and decide once and for all who her real family is.

Book excerpt: "Starfall" is the first novel in "The Fables of Chaos", a new dark fantasy epic series across the vast, broken world of Eos. 8,000 years ago, a great Cataclysm threatened all life on Eos. Its moon was fractured and strewn across the night sky, the oceans shifted and swallowed the lands. Those living across Eos were forced to fight against other-wordly horrors as reality itself was torn asunder. Since then, the peoples of Eos have long-forgotten their dark history, until signs of a new Cataclysm begin to appear once again...It began with the bleeding star. A strange, bright-red streak across the sky that some viewed as a sign of fortune, others as a stark omen of bloodshed. The secretive Magisters of the Grand Repository are hunted down and slaughtered by unknown forces. The seas turn to blood, and fresh corpses go missing in battle. Peasant children are lured away by strange, ghoulish whispers into the woods, never to be seen again.Katryna Bower, the runaway daughter of King Giliam Bower, is forced to return home after her mother dies suddenly and father is poisoned. Old traumas run deep however, and Katryna must confront her painful past and estranged family before she can uncover the twisted plot against her House.King Emery Blacktree agrees to end a bitter border dispute with the House Seynard by marrying his only daughter to the despisable Seynard prince. Emery's objective is to maintain peace, but all is quickly shattered at the royal wedding as his wife's fears consume her and slanderous secrets are revealed. How far will Emery go to avoid a civil war?Up north, Tomas and Rilan, two naive peasant boys from a small village, are conscripted into the army of the Broken Coast, and thrown into the horrors of an invasion by a foreign empire. War isn't the only threat they will face, as they fight alongside an unforgiving captain and his barbaric men on a dangerous mission that will lead them into the very path of the next Cataclysm and a strange girl who may hold all the answers.

Book excerpt: Solara Brooks needs a fresh start, someplace where nobody cares about the engine grease beneath her fingernails or the felony tattoos across her knuckles. The outer realm may be lawless, but it's not like the law has ever been on her side. Still, off-world travel doesn't come cheap; Solara is left with no choice but to indenture herself in exchange for passage to the outer realm. She just wishes it could have been to anyone besides Doran Spaulding, the rich, pretty-boy quarterback who made her life miserable in school. The tables suddenly turn when Doran is framed for conspiracy on Earth, and Solara cons him into playing the role of her servant on board the Banshee, a ship manned by an eccentric crew with their own secrets. Given the price on both Doran and Solara's heads, it may just be the safest place in the universe. It's been a long time since Solara has believed in anyone, and Doran is the last person she expected to trust. But when the Banshee's dangerous enemies catch up with them, Solara and Doran must come together to protect the ship that has become their home-and the eccentric crew that feels like family.

Book excerpt: An imaginative tour de force, Starfall consists of three dramatic dialogues among real people in imagined settings. Anchoring each of the dialogues is the great Russian film director and theoretician Sergei Eisenstein, whose artistic theories (in all their formations and reformations) run throughout the book, illustrating the influences that affected the Soviet art world in the period between the two world wars. In The Aquarians Eisenstein meets Bertolt Brecht in the first-class compartment of a train heading from Berlin to Moscow in 1932. They spend the night discussing and arguing about everything from the use of Renaissance magic in art tosome kind of Wagnerian Gesamtkunstwerk, in which everything in art is connected. The Sorcerer's Apprentices takes place at a meeting held in Moscow on April 14, 1935, on the occasion of performances given during a visit by a noted Chinese actor, Mei Lan-Fang, and his troupe, the prime representatives of early twentieth-century classical Chinese theater. Conceived as a series of speeches by noted members of the Soviet theater and film circles (Eisenstein again), The Sorcerer's Apprentices contrasts the Russian theater with that of the Chinese, the German (antifascist, emigre theater of Brecht and Erwin Piscator), and even the avant-garde British drama (as represented by Gordon Craig). Ash Wednesday has Eisenstein engaged in a dialogue with Mikhail Bakhtin. They speak about German culture -- in particular Eisenstein's desire to stage Wagner's The Valkyrie, which Bakhtin appears to object to on both political and artistic grounds; the influence of astrology in Soviet literary circles; and jazz music as a symbol of pure art. Filledwith references familiar and arcane, biographical and political, steeped in literary history from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth, and peppered with references to the writings of such dissimilar thinkers as Giordano Bruno, Rabelais, Goethe, and Antonin Artaud, Starfall will appeal to all readers interested in the developments of twentieth-century dramatic art.
