Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a thrilling train crash staged in Queenstown for The Whip, a 1917 melodrama, to modern romantic comedies such as Runaway Bride and Wedding Crashers, the beautiful Eastern Shore has long sung its siren call to Hollywood filmmakers. Big stars were born here, have lived here, and are buried here. Natives and come-heres alike have had films made about them. Robert Mitchum. Tallulah Bankhead. The Lindas, Hamilton and Harrison. Annie Oakley. Misty of Chincoteague. Lucille Fletcher and Douglass Wallop. Edna Ferber, Showboat, and the James Adams Floating Theatre. The First Kiss. Violets are Blue. Failure to Launch. Novelists and screenwriters tend to love this place, but at least one scribe who spent formative years here and didn’t like it a bit—James M. Cain—would go on to author some of the most scorching crime stories ever to shatter Hollywood censorship standards. You'll read about all this and more in Stardust by the Bushel. Eastern Shore historian and lifelong resident Brent Lewis offers a wide-ranging compass—from Wilmington to Cape Charles, Oxford to Ocean City—finding literally scores of connections to Tinseltown. No Eastern Shore bookshelf will be complete without this fresh look at an underappreciated dimension of Eastern Shore history—its distinctive role as a hatchery, sanctuary, and stage setting for universally known moments in American pop culture.

Book The Stardust Lounge

Download or read book The Stardust Lounge written by Deborah Digges and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen Digges is the kind of angry adolescent a lot of parents would have given up on. He is out of control by the time he is 13 -- running with gangs, stealing cars, fooling around with drugs and guns, and in general making his family’s life hell. Confronted with his growing recklessness and defiance, his mother, the poet Deborah Digges, decides to try to accept Stephen on his own terms--a course that stuns her family and leads to the breakup of her second marriage. Digges “shadows” him on his late-night forays so that she can understand his world, welcomes his gang into their apartment, and tries to see life through his eyes. When she discovers that children who are devoted to animals have an easier time forming attachments to other people, she fills their home with a menagerie of ailing or abandoned pets. She also turns to an unconventional therapist who offers unusual — but helpful — treatment. The Stardust Lounge isn’t your usual story of rebellious adolescence. The power of Digges’s memoir comes from her stubborn unwillingness to give up on Stephen. Even when things are roughest, Digges manages to see the intelligent, sensitive child behind the hostile behavior. However difficult the path she chooses, her story is ultimately a heartening one, and it’s impossible not to root for this family as it rebuilds itself.

Book Shah Rukh Can The Story of the Man and Star Called Shah Rukh Khan

Download or read book Shah Rukh Can The Story of the Man and Star Called Shah Rukh Khan written by Mushtaq Shiekh and published by Om Books International. This book was released on with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the best window into Shah Rukh Khan s inner world and soul. Mushtaq, being a friend of the family, is the best artist for this family portrait portrayal. If Shah Rukh Khan has been known for his non-stop talk then writer Mushtaq Sheikh too doesn't appear far behind when it comes to translating his thoughts into words. He writes, and writes and then further writes about Shah Rukh, something that makes one feel that more than a friend and a colleague, Mushtaq looks at Shah Rukh as a hero. Someone who is not just his hero but also an entire country's - correction, entire world's hero! It is this very 'fan factor' that makes 'Shah Rukh Can' a read that seems to be coming straight from an admirer's heart. What makes this book special is that a lot of the material (words and pictures) is stuff that we haven't seen before. There are some things even Google's search algorithms cannot find. But Mushtaq Shiekh can. From a book that claims to talk about 'The Life and Times of Shah Rukh Khan', the least you expect is some trivia from the actor's life, both personal and professional, about which not much has been written about in the past. The kind which makes you wonder if something like that had really happened in the actor's life. Thankfully, Mushtaq extracts quite some trivia out of the actor's life. So you get to know how Shah Rukh was offered the role of Anil Kapoor's car driver in 1942 - A Love Story, which he rejected (of course!). Eventually Raghuvir Yadav did that role. Or how Shah Rukh completely surrendered to the director's vision and withdrew himself when he couldn't follow the trajectory of Subhash Ghai's Pardes. It's a different matter though that Shah Rukh was appreciated for his performance in the film but so was he in Karan Arjun too, which by the way he dared not watch over the years because he didn't connect with the role. There are number of such little instances that make 'Shah Rukh Can' an interesting read. But is it just about the actor and the trivia around his life? Not at all. One of the unexplored facets of Shah Rukh that is covered in the book in extensive detail is his views around acting v/s performances. This book is the best window into Shah Rukh Khan's inner world and soul. Mushtaq, being a friend of the family, is the best artist for this family portrait. It's almost like having Shah Rukh Khan over for coffee. - Karan JoharCompelling. A story you need to read if you feel the need to be inspired. - TabuThis book catches Shah Rukh Khan in his personal and professional space with versatile ease. - Subhash GhaiA book that I could not keep down. Worthy of many reads - Farah KhanIt's not a book it unfolds like a movie. - Ashutosh GowarikarIt's a beautifully crafted book. It's very difficult to catch the radiance of a man and star like Shah Rukh Khan. Mushtaq Shiekh not only manages it but also shocks you by adding further value. - Santosh SivanWhen a writer of the calibre of Mushtaq is writing a book about me, then I presume the book I am writing can wait. - Shah Rukh Khan

Download or read book The Mountain Mystery written by Ron Miksha and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, no one could explain mountains. Arguments about their origin were spirited, to say the least. Progressive scientists were ridiculed for their ideas. Most geologists thought the Earth was shrinking. Contracting like a hot ball of iron, shrinking and exposing ridges that became mountains. Others were quite sure the planet was expanding. Growth widened sea basins and raised mountains. There was yet another idea, the theory that the world's crust was broken into big plates that jostled around, drifting until they collided and jarred mountains into existence. That idea was invariably dismissed as pseudo-science. Or "utter damned rot" as one prominent scientist said. But the doubtful theory of plate tectonics prevailed. Mountains, earthquakes, ancient ice ages, even veins of gold and fields of oil are now seen as the offspring of moving tectonic plates. Just half a century ago, most geologists sternly rejected the idea of drifting continents. But a few intrepid champions of plate tectonics dared to differ. The Mountain Mystery tells their story.

  • Author : Simon Reynolds
  • Publisher : Catapult

Download or read book Energy Flash written by Simon Reynolds and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecstasy did for house music what LSD did for psychedelic rock. Now, in Energy Flash, journalist Simon Reynolds offers a revved-up and passionate inside chronicle of how MDMA (“ecstasy”) and MIDI (the basis for electronica) together spawned the unique rave culture of the 1990s. England, Germany, and Holland began tinkering with imported Detroit techno and Chicago house music in the late 1980s, and when ecstasy was added to the mix in British clubs, a new music subculture was born. A longtime writer on the music beat, Reynolds started watching—and partaking in—the rave scene early on, observing firsthand ecstasy’s sense-heightening and serotonin-surging effects on the music and the scene. In telling the story, Reynolds goes way beyond straight music history, mixing social history, interviews with participants and scene-makers, and his own analysis of the sounds with the names of key places, tracks, groups, scenes, and artists. He delves deep into the panoply of rave-worthy drugs and proper rave attitude and etiquette, exposing a nuanced musical phenomenon. Read on, and learn why is nitrous oxide is called “hippy crack.”
