Book The Coloring Book of Jewish Symbols

Download or read book The Coloring Book of Jewish Symbols written by M. G. Anthony and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-12-06 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This coloring book will take you on a meaningful journey utilizing five key Jewish symbols. As you color the Shalom section of the book, perhaps try to drown out all the noise around you and allow this expedition to bring you some inner peace. The Shofar is not simply a ram’s horn. Its sound and symbolism are meant to penetrate our souls. The Hamsa amulet is a talisman utilized by some in Judaism and other religions to guard against negative energy. It is clearly meant to signify protection in a chaotic universe. Chai means “living” or “alive;” it signifies the life force that drives us, that compels us to keep going. There are few symbols as lively as the Star of David, which has become the emblem of Judaism and modern Jewish identity.

Book excerpt: Today the Star of David is the universally recognized Jewish symbol, but was that always the case? In this fascinating work that includes dozens of full color photographs, Dr. Norman explores the use of the hexagram through its use in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as in Buddhism and Eastern philosophies. What was it about the hexagram that made it so attractive in multiple faith traditions? He explains that the earliest documented use of the hexagram is in Capernaum in the sixth century, and was displayed prominently in Prague in the thirteenth century, but it did not become the defining symbol of Judaism until the 1930s, when Nazis forced the Jews to wear a yellow hexagram to indicate their Jewishness. The Star took on new meaning at that point, and then when it was adorned on the flag of the State of Israel in 1948, it took its place as one of the great religious symbols.

The Zionists adopted the symbol as part of the national ensign. Pp. 97-104 deal with the Nazi use of the Magen David to mark the Jews. Download or read book Jewish Curses written by and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a guide and coloring book of Jewish "curses." This book is not about cursing as in the kind of "cursing" you do when you hit your thumb with a hammer. Something funny happened on the way to the world we live in today. That funny thing was the hilarious belly laugh Borscht-Belt comedy of immigrant Jews. And Yiddish was a critical and funny part of that world. Generations of Jewish immigrants came to our English-speaking world with Yiddish, a secret language which only they spoke, and it carried their culture. Yaakov Kirschen, famous Jewish cartoonist and comedian has written and drawn this treasure of our people. It makes a great gift for a younger generation that came along after that golden age of Yiddish comedy and is a heart-warming gift for those of us who can still remember those days. And even if you're not into coloring, this cartoon "guide" is super fun. Cartoonist Kirschen is an old guy. Mr. Shuldig, the bald hero of his Dry Bones cartoons is also an old guy. Now, after more than four decades of writing and drawing his daily Israeli/American political cartoon, Kirschen has decided to tackle something REALLY important; passing on the essence of Yiddish culture and comedy to a younger generation and warming the hearts of other old folks. His new project is a series called "Grandpa's Jewish Cartoon Coloring Books." Those early Yiddish-speaking immigrants expressed their frustrations and anger through wickedly funny Yiddish curses that dripped with cynicism. Kirschen's book is a funny cartoon guide and coloring book based on English translations of those sometimes rough explosions of Yiddish one-liners which were the basis of what we now call "Jewish humor."
