Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tangata Whenua: An Illustrated History charts the sweep of Māori history from ancient origins through to the twenty-first century. Through narrative and images, it offers a striking overview of the past, grounded in specific localities and histories. The story begins with the migration of ancestral peoples out of South China, some 5,000 years ago. Moving through the Pacific, these early voyagers arrived in Aotearoa early in the second millennium AD, establishing themselves as tangata whenua in the place that would become New Zealand. By the nineteenth century, another wave of settlers brought new technology, ideas and trading opportunities – and a struggle for control of the land. Survival and resilience shape the history as it extends into the twentieth century, through two world wars, the growth of an urban culture, rising protest, and Treaty settlements. Today, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, Māori are drawing on both international connections and their ancestral place in Aotearoa. Fifteen stunning chapters bring together scholarship in history, archaeology, traditional narratives and oral sources. A parallel commentary is offered through more than 500 images, ranging from the elegant shapes of ancient taonga and artefacts to impressions of Māori in the sketchbooks and paintings of early European observers, through the shifting focus of the photographer’s lens to the response of contemporary Māori artists to all that has gone before. The many threads of history are entwined in this compelling narrative of the people and the land, the story of a rich past that illuminates the present and will inform the future.

Book Right on the Numbers

Download or read book Right on the Numbers written by Nino Frostino and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic subject of the book is to justify which athlete was the Greatest to ever wear a particular number. In my research, I listed all of the possible uniform numbers 0 to 99, took the finest athletes from the four major sports (baseball, basketball, football, and hockey), and slotted them under their appropriate uniform number. For each player, I created a mini-biography detailing their finest exploits on the field-whether it was All Star nods, championships won, records held, on-field highlights etc. Basically, I created a "case" for that athlete to be considered the best to ever wear the number. Among the possible uniform numbers, I've listed nearly 850 athletes for consideration and provided the accompanying biography. At the end of eahc section, I form a debate as to the Greatest to ever wear the number and then make a selection. After the selection is posted, I then list some quotes made by or about the athlete for the reader to gain even more insight into the player. Even if the reader is not overly concerned about the choice as to the Greatest under each uniform number, the book also serves as a wonderful reference guide. If the reader is interested in finding out more about any of the listed athletes, it's easy to look up the player and find out who he played for and what he did between the white lines. In either cae, Right On the Numbers serves multiple uses and is a must have for any true sports fan.

Book excerpt: Star Gossage's (Ngati Wai, Ngati Ruanui) paintings emerge from her wahine (female) centered world. They express how people are interconnected; inseparable from wairua, whenua, whakapapa and whanau (spirit, land, ancestry and family). Showing 20 years of her artistic practice, this complex and emotive exhibition illuminates her use of the portrait and figure in the landscape to communicate themes of unity, grief, compassion and aroha (love).

Download or read book Changing the World Is the Only Fit Work for a Grown Man written by Steve Harrison and published by . This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a 'sixties adman who harnessed the big ideas of his age and set out to reinvent advertising - and then change the world. In so doing he introduced interactive, PR-generating stunts, and social media - way back in the 1960s. Then he used them to save the Grand Canyon, kick-start the Green Movement, free a Caribbean island and launch Wired magazine's 'patron saint', Marshall McLuhan. And he did it all with a flamboyance that inspired the likes of Tom Wolfe, John Steinbeck and the makers of the counterculture. His name was Howard Luck Gossage. These are his life and times.

Book Johnny Temple

Download or read book Johnny Temple written by William A. Cook and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cincinnati Reds leadoff hitter Johnny Temple batted over .300 three times between 1954 and 1959. A tobacco chewing and tough-talking hustler, he had a fiery disposition on the field, which led many sportswriters, teammates and opposing players to refer to him as a throwback to baseball's early days--an Eddie Stanky or Enos Slaughter type who would challenge anyone to a fight. He and Milwaukee Braves shortstop Johnny Logan engaged in one of the Major League's longest-running feuds. Temple was an expert glove man, forming one of the premier double play combinations of the 1950s with shortstop Roy McMillan. Following his retirement in 1964, making ends meet became a daily struggle. Temple's life ended in disappointment and disgrace.

Book Dodgers vs Yankees

Download or read book Dodgers vs Yankees written by Michael Schiavone and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of the Epic Rivalry between Two of Baseball's Powerhouses that Has Spanned Over Eighty Years—from Ebbets Field to Dodger Stadium, from Babe Ruth to Reggie Jackson The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees are two of the most storied and popular teams in not only baseball, but all of sports. Their rivalry began in New York and continued with the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn and moving to sunny California. The two teams have even met in the World Series a record eleven times! For a long time, the Dodgers-Yankees rivalry was the marquee match-up in baseball. For as good as the Dodgers were, the Yankees were almost always better. But why were the Yankees so much better than the Dodgers? Were the Dodgers “chokers” when it mattered most? Or was it simply the case that the baseball gods favored the team that would be later known to its detractors as the “Evil Empire” over the boys in blue? From Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series, Jackie Robinson’s famous steal of home in the 1955 Series, or Reggie Jackson’s three-home-run game in the 1977 Series, Dodgers vs. Yankees provides a history of this rivalry—from their first World Series match-up in 1941 until the present day. Every game between the two teams, including inter-league play, is covered as author Michael Schiavone attempts to answer why the Yankees have reigned supreme over the Dodgers. Whether you’re a fan of the Yankees or Dodgers—both on the East and West Coast—Dodgers vs. Yankees offers the most complete overview and analysis of these team’s timeless rivalry.
