Book excerpt: A nuclear war, the war of all wars, desolated Earth the way we once knew it. The few lone people that had survived the catastrophic event sought out refuge at the bottom of canyons to avoid the toxicity and radiation above. Every day, many prayed for some sort of sign, some ray of hope that would come save them from their dire situation. Food was scarce and staying alive was even tougher. Help would come from unexpected sources. Nobody ever truly believes in extraterrestrials until they're standing right in front of you. And even then, it is not totally believable. A misfit group of people that survived the war, are kidnapped to help a much larger universal cause. One that none of them ever knew existed. A few of the surviving earthlings are carefully selected due to each one of the skills that they possessed prior to the big war. An ex-navy seal, a former showgirl, a doctor, an escaped prison inmate, a former Olympic champion, and a biker gang member, despite their differences, are forced to come together quickly as they are abducted one by one and thrust into a world of unknown. They come to meet an alien general, short in stature and skin the color of night, who is the leader of a galactic army assembled of beings from many different planets. It doesn't take long to realize the mysterious general is full of deceit, espionage, and lies ... It's difficult for them to know whether to trust the small alien since he treats them well initially or to flee and figure things out for themselves. They travel to many different planets to gather information and skillsets that they will need to defeat a much larger threat than they had originally thought that looms in their future. Will the humans be able to come together in these foreign predicaments, or will adversity and the weight of these unique situations destroy them? Only time will tell...

Book The Gospel According to Star Trek The Original Crew

Download or read book The Gospel According to Star Trek The Original Crew written by Kevin C. Neece and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's Christian about Star Trek? Nothing. That's the way most people see it and that certainly seems to be the way the franchise is intended. There's no question that the Trek universe is based on a doggedly humanistic world view and is set in a future time when religion has essentially vanished from Earth. If that's the case, how can there even be a "gospel according to Star Trek" In The Gospel According to Star Trek: The Original Crew, you'll discover how the continuing voyages of Kirk and company aboard the Enterprise--from the original series to the Abramsverse--tell us more about our human quest for God than you ever imagined. You'll learn how Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's own spiritual quest informed the franchise, what he and the series really have to say about God and religion, and the amazing image of Christ contained in Star Trek's most popular character. You'll also see how Star Trek can help us recover a deeper, more fully human gospel that embraces our humanity instead of denigrating it and echoes the call of both Spock and Christ: "Live long and prosper!" (John 10:10).

Book Red Rose Crew

Download or read book Red Rose Crew written by Daniel Boyne and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1975, a group of amazing women rowed their way to international success and glory, battling sexual prejudice, bureaucracy, and male domination in one of the most grueling and competitive sports around. Among the members of the first international women’s crew team--and one of the first women’s teams anywhere--were Gail Pearson, the soft-spoken MIT professor who fought equally hard off the water to win the political battles neccessary for her team to succeed; lead rower Carie Graves, a statuesque bohemian from rural Wisconsin who dropped out of college and later became the most intense rower of the crew; and Lynn Stillman, a tiny sixteen-year-old coxswain from California. On hand to guide them was Harry Parker, the legendary Harvard men’s crew coach who overcame his doubts about the ability of women to withstand the rigors of hard training. From their first dramatic bid at the 1975 World Championships to their preparations for their first Olympic Games in 1976, this gripping story of bravery, determination, and indomitable spirit captures a compelling moment in the history of sports and of America.
