Download or read book Stories of My People written by Marsha Stanley and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of My People is a highly personal account of Marsha Stanley's four family lines of descent from her Appalachian ancestors: the Stanley, Buchanan, Burke and Yost families who settled in Virginia and North Carolina. This story-telling narrative by a former newspaper reporter is not dull genealogy. It is enlivened by detailed historical content, exhaustive genealogical research, sometimes hilarious family stories and numerous photographs. The story begins in the 1600s in Tidewater, Virginia, not far from Jamestown and continues with early and perilous settlements in the Colonial wilderness. The book is a product of 45 years of research by Marsha and others in her family line into 300 years of original records, including tax lists, census records, ship manifests, marriages, wills and private letters. Captivated by genealogical research and the determination to solve mysteries, Stanley chronicles personal family anecdotes, life as a coal miner's daughter, the company of aunts, uncles and cousins, fond memories of picking strawberries, making apple butter, and eating simple, but delicious, home-cooked meals. There are reports of the isolation of remote life and the efforts of the first woman elected to the Virginia legislature and her success in bringing a road across Big A (for Arse) Mountain into Buchanan County to the door of the school which she founded and which Stanley's mother attended. There are details of a typical, arduous wash day before washing machines, accounts of the Yost men who were gunmakers for General George Washington and his Revolutionary War soldiers and descriptions of Quaker life. Stories are told against the backdrop of the human misery and environmental degradation of coal mining, the immeasurable losses of the American Chestnut Tree and many species of animals, harsh living conditions for the early colonial settlers, the risks associated with child-bearing and lack of birth control particularly for poor women, the tragedy of undiagnosed and untreated illnesses, and a glimpse of untold horrors of the Vietnam War. Stanley's unvarnished account of her hillbilly legacy is full of emotion - sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, even sad - and always authentic.
