Book Australian Dictionary of Biography Volume 19

Download or read book Australian Dictionary of Biography Volume 19 written by Melanie Nolan and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 19 of the Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB) contains concise biographies of individuals who died between 1991 and 1995. The first of two volumes for the 1990s, it presents a colourful montage of late twentieth-century Australian life, containing the biographies of significant and representative Australians. The volume is still in the shadow of World War II with servicemen and women who enlisted young appearing, but these influences are dimming and there are now increasing numbers of non-white, non-male, non-privileged and non-straight subjects. The 680 individuals recorded in volume 19 of the ADB include Wiradjuri midwife and Ngunnawal Elder Violet Bulger; Aboriginal rights activist, poet, playwright and artist Kevin Gilbert; and Torres Strait Islander community leader and land rights campaigner Eddie Mabo. HIV/AIDS child activists Tony Lovegrove and Eve Van Grafhorst have entries, as does conductor Stuart Challender, ‘the first Australian celebrity to go public’ about his HIV/AIDS condition in 1991. The arts are, as always, well-represented, including writers Frank Hardy, Mary Durack and Nene Gare, actors Frank Thring and Leonard Teale and arts patron Ian Potter. We are beginning to see the effects of the steep rise in postwar immigration flow through to the ADB. Artist Joseph Stanislaw Ostoja-Kotkowski was born in Poland. Pilar Moreno de Otaegui, co-founded the Spanish Club of Sydney. Chinese restaurateur and community leader Ming Poon (Dick) Low migrated to Victoria in 1953. Often we have a dearth of information about the domestic lives of our subjects; politician Olive Zakharov, however, bravely disclosed at the Victorian launch of the federal government’s campaign to Stop Violence Against Women in 1993 that she was a survivor of domestic violence in her second marriage. Take a dip into the many fascinating lives of the Australian Dictionary of Biography.

Book excerpt: Richly illustrated and beautifully designed, Modern Times: The Untold Story of Modernism in Australia reveals how modernism transformed all aspects of Australian culture across five tumultuous decades from 1917 to 1967. The influence of modernism was wide reaching. Modern Times looks at all things modern and as diverse as art, advertising, photography, film, fashion, the body, architecture, interiors, recreational sites such as the new swimming pools and fountains, milk bars and auto culture. Modernism embodied the utopian possibilities of the 20th century. It transformed Australian cities into complex metropolises and offered access to new cosmopolitan cultures. This is the first time that such diverse material has been brought together in one volume. With stories from more than 20 authors and more than 300 images, many of them never before published, Modern Times will be a revelation!

Book Modernism Australia

Download or read book Modernism Australia written by Ann Stephen and published by Melbourne University. This book was released on 2006 with total page 1076 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first anthology of modernist art, design and architecture in Australia reveals the raw nerves that modernism exposed and highlights the role of migrants, expatriates, travel and mass reproduction in the reception of modernism in Australia. In more than two hundred documents - talks, letters, fiery debates, public manifestoes and private diaries - the main players of the time (1917-67) convey in their own words the tensions, aspirations and paradoxes behind the reception of modernism. Each document is put in context and accompanied by expert commentaries from the editors. The collection overturns many key assumptions about Australian culture, revealing not a 'time-lag' in reception, but an up-to-date engagement with the latest overseas trends and developments. It shows a surprising acceptance of modernism in the commercial realms (design, fashion, interior decoration), yet chronicles the dogged institutional resistance that greeted modernism, particularly in the fine arts.

Book Patrick White s Theatre

Download or read book Patrick White s Theatre written by Denise Varney and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Varney combines a theoretically astute sense of the hybridity of the dramatic event, with a dense but lucidly rendered sociological history of White’s plays as they progress through different productions, revivals, and receptions … This is an essential insight, and one which could be usefully extended to White’s novels, and perhaps to Australian modernism broadly.” - Jonathan Dunk, Australian Book Review One of the giants of Australian literature and the only Australian writer to have won the Nobel Prize for Literature, Patrick White received less acclaim when he turned his hand to playwriting. In Patrick White’s Theatre, Denise Varney offers a new analysis of White’s eight published plays, discussing how they have been staged and received over a period of 60 years. From the sensational rejection of The Ham Funeral by the Adelaide Festival in 1962 to 21st-century revivals incorporating digital technology, these productions and their reception illustrate the major shifts that have taken place in Australian theatre over time. Varney unpacks White’s complex and unique theatrical imagination, the social issues that preoccupied him as a playwright, and his place in the wider Australian modernist and theatrical traditions.

Book Guy Grey Smith Life Force

Download or read book Guy Grey Smith Life Force written by Andrew Gaynor and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guy Grey-Smith (1916-1981) remains one of the most important Australian artists of his generation. His artwork has been collected by every major public gallery in the country. Based in Western Australia, Grey-Smith exhibited nationally, participated in key international exhibitions, received Queens Honors Awards, and was a spirited contributor and active participant in the national arts scene. Granted access for the first time to Guy Grey-Smith's notebooks, war-time sketches, correspondence, and estate, author Andrew Gaynor draws a fascinating portrait of a country boy whose life was first liberated, then stalled, by the brutality of war. Teaching himself to draw while interned in prisoner of war camps, Grey-Smith went on to create some of the most enduring and powerful images of the Australian landscape, redolent with color, texture, and an unmistakable life force. He studied under the modernist sculptor Henry Moore at the Chelsea School of Art, London. Although primarily a painter, Grey-Smith also produced sculptures, pen and ink drawings, etchings, and wood blocks. This is the first book about this outstanding Australian artist and his remarkable 35-year career.
