Book Standards of Mind and Heart

Download or read book Standards of Mind and Heart written by Peggy Clohessy Silva and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2002-04-05 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the remarkable story of the creation of a new kind of high school that truly aspires to educate all students to high standards. Believing that a deeply personalized culture can prevent the senseless violence that has invaded many public schools, educators at Souhegan High School in Amherst, New Hampshire set out to create a safe, caring, and academically rigorous school. In this volume, Silva (a teacher) and Mackin (a principal) chronicle their experiences as they worked through the many challenges that ultimately resulted in this extraordinarily successful school. Featuring their honest reflections and the voices of other participants, this book: -- Portrays a real public high school (not a small alternative school) that is successfully implementing most of the reform practices recommended by national reform models. -- Demonstrates how schools can strike a balance between the need for stricter safety measures and the social and emotional needs of each student, thus avoiding violent outbursts in schools. -- Details the school's structure, curriculum, professional culture, and systems of accountability for all students in a heterogeneous, inclusionary setting. -- Describes the use of teaming, advisory groups, exhibitions, and senior projects. -- Provides a working model of the "Breaking Ranks" recommendations, including the importance of "personalization" and democracy in education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mind to Heart first became a reality in 2013. Faced with the devastating loss of her beloved grandfather followed by a job layoff two months later, Andrea had to develop a healthy way to deal with the shift in the trajectory of her complicated and seemingly unsteady life, so she began writing. It began as a simple way of encouraging others through her heartache. The writings have been nicknamed as AMTs over the years. AMTs are short messages of hope that are shared with others as a way to offer encouragement that is inspired straight from God. These messages always include a scripture to validate the topic and to serve as a reminder that The Word is true and applicable. The easy to understand manner that each thought is presented helps the reader to get a grasp of Biblical principles regarding how we should live our lives based on the Word of God. There have been so many that have been blessed by these messages that it was only befitting to finally publish some of the work. God desires for us to share the Good News with others, so this collection of AMTs should inspire you but also those around you. These writings are not only easy to read and understand, but they should also give you hope and guidance about how you should live out your life full of purpose. People often wonder how she comes up with so many different topics, but it is through a willingness to follow Christ by upholding His holy standards. Mind to Heart is a compilation of some of Andrea's latest work, and it is sure to bless you.

Book excerpt: This volume contains nine chapters of translation, by a range of leading scholars, focusing on core themes in the philosophy of Zhu Xi (1130-1200), one of the most influential Chinese thinkers of the later Confucian tradition. It includes an Introduction to Zhu's life and thought, a chronology of important events in his life, and a list of key terms of art. Zhu Xi's philosophy offers the most systematic and comprehensive expression of the Confucian tradition; he sought to explain and show the connections between the classics, relate them to a range of contemporary philosophical issues concerning the metaphysical underpinnings of the tradition, and defend Confucianism against competing traditions such as Daoism and Buddhism. He elevated the Four Books-i.e. the Analects, Mengzi, Great Learning, and Doctrine of the Mean-to a new and preeminent position within the Confucian canon and his edition and interpretation of these four texts was adopted as the basis for the Imperial Examination System, which served as the pathway to officialdom and success in traditional Chinese society. Zhu Xi's interpretation remained the orthodox tradition until the collapse of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and exerted a profound and enduring influence on how Confucianism was understood in Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.

Book Untangling the Seven Desires of Your Heart

Download or read book Untangling the Seven Desires of Your Heart written by Lavon Koerner and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LaVon Koerner learnt the concepts that prompted the content of this book, while he was setting up and running his International Consulting Business (Revenue Storm). While these concepts were curiously absent from the church, they were constantly revealing themselves while he was conducting international business. As LaVon engaged in multiple cultures in 49 different countries, the patterns became increasingly more noticeable to him. It was out there in the international community that LaVon uncovered the seven common denominators occupying every human heart. They stood out as the most beautifully simplistic common denominators instilled by God in every human heart that all nationalities and peoples shared. In a world that appears to be growing more deeply divided, he found that these commonalities reach beyond skin color, languages, dialects, or cultural mores. We all share in the desperation and the joy of the Seven Desire in EVERY human heart. Your own heart will validate their existence as you read this book. It is now time to put these critical observations in the rightful hands of the church where they belong. If they remain absent from the personal work of the church, we will be failing each other while allowing people to continue in emotional bondage. These longings hold the key to unifying the church as one body sharing all the same aspirations that have been built into our hearts by God himself. We need to fight the obsession over what divides us and move onto these seven common longings that unite us. God designed just one “mankind” and every human being has these exact same seven desires in their hearts. This book will untangle each one of them and set you free from all the negative emotions emanating out of the love-gaps that surround them.
