Book excerpt: Results are summarized which provide the basis for development of the proposed ASTM standard test method for measuring and presenting very slow cyclic rates of fatigue crack propagation. The technique for obtaining very slow rate data as K decreases with crack extension is described. Data are reviewed that show the individual and combined effects of various precracking and testing procedures, loading rates, and other testing parameters. The data are used to demonstrate the utility of the method and its limitations. Guidelines are given for the minimization of transient growth rate processes which can confound interpretation of the data. Analytical procedures for fitting near-threshold data are also discussed.

Book excerpt: With the advent of ASTM Test Method for Measurement of Fatigue Crack Growth Rates (E 647-91) and the associated annexes for nonvisual methods of monitoring crack length, there exists a need to address many aspects of the role that automation plays in generating fatigue crack growth rate data. The current ASTM standard provides primary guidance for visual methods of monitoring crack length and manual control of the test. The associated annexes provide guidance for two common nonvisual methods of monitoring crack length. Although they are good guides for both manual and automated control, they lack detail on many important considerations related to stress intensity (K) control, crack length precision, and load precision. This paper will emphasize the effect of sampling rate and resolution on crack length precision, dynamic load precision, and control. The issues will include analog-to-digital conversion resolution, digital filtering, peak reading, and multichannel phase considerations.

The goal of this paper is to discuss in detail the experience developed and lessons learned during years of spectrum crack growth testing. Issues concerned with specimen geometry, crack geometry, precracking methodology, crack length measurement, spectrum content, load magnitude control, and interpretation of results are addressed herein. Although the ASTM Standard Test Method for Measurement of Fatigue Crack Growth Rates, E 647, provides guidance that is useful to this test, the specialized nature of spectrum testing does provide its own unique set of issues different from da/dN versus ?K testing.
