Book Cotton Fiber Physics Chemistry and Biology

Download or read book Cotton Fiber Physics Chemistry and Biology written by David D. Fang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cotton fiber is the most important natural fiber used in the textile industry. The physical structure and chemical compositions of cotton fibers have been extensively studied. Newer high speed spinning instruments are being deployed around the world that demand longer, stronger and finer fibers. Consequently, genetic improvement in fiber quality has been stressed. With improvement in fiber quality has come the realization that further fiber improvement will require a better understanding of fiber development and biology. As a consequence, cotton fiber developmental biology, genetics and genomics have become focal points in the cotton research community. As the longest single-celled plant hair, cotton fiber has been used as an experiment model to study trichome initiation and elongation in plants. This book provides a comprehensive update on cotton fiber physics, chemistry and biology that form the three sections of the book. In the physics section, the physical structure of cotton fiber is first illustrated in great detail. Then a suite of fiber properties and their measuring methods are described. The pros and cons of each method are outlined. New methods to measure physical properties of single fiber and young developing fibers are included. In the chemistry section, the chemical compositions of cotton fibers are described in detail. This knowledge is necessary for efficient modification of cotton fibers for better and broader utilization. The advancement in cotton fiber modification using chemical and enzymatic methods opened new ways to utilize cotton fibers. In the biology section, the book first introduces the utilization of naturally occurring color cottons. Color cottons possess unique attributes such as better fire retardant ability. Advancement in understanding fiber color genetics and biochemical pathways and new utilization of color cottons are discussed. Recent technological advancements in molecular biology and genomics have enabled us to study fiber development in great depth. Many genes and quantitative trait loci related to fiber quality attributes have been identified and genetically mapped. Some of these genes and QTLs are being used in breeding. Progresses in cotton fiber improvement using breeding and biotechnology are discussed in the last chapter. This book serves as a reference for researchers, students, processors, and regulators who either conduct research in cotton fiber improvement or utilize cotton fibers.

Book Advanced Textile Testing Techniques

Download or read book Advanced Textile Testing Techniques written by Sheraz Ahmad and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Textile testing is an important field of textile sciences involving experimental evaluation of conventional as well as technical textile products. This book aims to provide technical details, required protocols and procedures for conducting any specific evaluation test along with key parameters. The book covers the topics in two main sections, first one for the conventional textile testing techniques starting from fiber to final product while the second one focusses on testing of technical textiles. Written with a reader friendly approach, it will cater to graduate students in textile engineering as well as industry personnel, focusing on following key points: Addresses all techniques for testing both conventional and technical textiles. Describes testing techniques compliance with the latest requirements of the updated EN ISO and AATCC standards. Provides detailed description on the testing of technical textiles and their products. Discusses the operations conditions, like atmospheric conditions, and human error with cause and effect diagrams. Covers both destructive and non-destructive testing.

Book Physical Properties of Textile Fibres

Download or read book Physical Properties of Textile Fibres written by J. W. S. Hearle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-10-10 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1962, and now in its fourth edition, Physical properties of textile fibres has become a classic, providing the standard reference on key aspects of fibre performance. The new edition has been substantially reorganised and revised to reflect new research. After introductory chapters on fibre structure, testing and sampling, the book reviews key fibre properties, their technical significance, factors affecting these properties and measurement issues. Each chapter covers both natural and synthetic fibres, including high-performance fibres. The book first reviews properties such as fineness, length and density. It then considers thermal properties and reaction to moisture. A further group of chapters then reviews tensile properties, thermo-mechanical responses, fibre breakage and fatigue. Finally, the book discusses dielectric properties, electrical resistance and static, optical properties and fibre friction.Written by one of the world's leading authorities, the fourth edition of Physical properties of textile fibres consolidates its reputation as a standard work both for those working in the textile industry and those teaching and studying textile science. - A standard reference on key aspects of fibre performance - An essential read and reference for textile technologists, fibre scientists, textile engineers and those in academia - Provides substantial updated material on fibre structure and new test methods, data and theories regarding properties of textile fibres
