Book excerpt: The Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) is a non-ministerial government department with responsibility for regular inspection of schools, further education, and the regulation of childminding and day care. As part of its ongoing scrutiny of the work of Ofsted, the Committee's report considers Ofsted's work in 2003-04, including its annual report, structure and strategy; the growth of its remit, including its new responsibilities under the Children Bill relating to the inspection of children's services; value for money aspects of its inspection activities; the process and conduct of school inspections and reporting. The Committee's findings include support for the Ofsted's proposed new streamlined inspection regime to be established under the banner of 'a new relationship with schools'; and some concern that Ofsted's strategic expansion into new areas of responsibility needs to be carefully managed to ensure effective integration of new staff and efficient use of its increased resources. The Committee also welcomes Ofsted's proposal to publish a self-assessment review of its inspection activities, and urges the inspectorate to pursue the development of rigorous benchmarking measures.

Book Bubble Schools and the Long Road from Lockdown

Download or read book Bubble Schools and the Long Road from Lockdown written by Tony Breslin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-14 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sequel to Breslin’s critically acclaimed Lessons from Lockdown explores how school leaders, teachers, parents and pupils have navigated their way through and from lockdown. This is the story of ‘doing’ schooling against the topsy-turvy backdrop of a pandemic that has caused us all to reflect not just on the purpose and substance of education but also the world that schools might, in the future, need to prepare children and young people for. Drawing on the voices of more than a hundred pupils, parents and professionals, it captures the range of experiences as teachers and students grappled with new ways of working, policy chaos and the complexity of schooling and teaching in such a landscape. Bubble Schools is a must-read for all concerned about the shape that our public education systems take as we begin to move forward from a system-shock that has revealed both the strengths and the weaknesses of education policy, system design and long-established classroom practice.

Book The Practice and Theory of School Improvement

Download or read book The Practice and Theory of School Improvement written by David Hopkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-05-13 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ANDY HARGREAVES Department of Teacher Education, Curriculum and Instruction Lynch School of Education, Boston College, MA, U.S.A. ANN LIEBERMAN Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Stanford, CA, U.S.A. MICHAEL FULLAN Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, Canada DAVID HOPKINS Department for Education and Skills, London, U.K. This set of four volumes on Educational Change brings together evidence and insights on educational change issues from leading writers and researchers in the field from across the world. Many of these writers, whose chapters have been specially written for these books, have been investigating, helping initiate and implementing educational change, for most or all of their lengthy careers. Others are working on the cutting edge of theory and practice in educational change, taking the field in new or even more challenging directions. And some are more skeptical about the literature of educational change and the assumptions on which it rests. They help us to approach projects of understanding or initiating educational change more deeply, reflectively and realistically. Educational change and reform have rarely had so much prominence within public policy, in so many different places. Educational change is ubiquitous. It figures large in Presidential and Prime Ministerial speeches. It is at or near the top of many National policy agendas. Everywhere, educational change is not only a policy priority but also major public news. Yet action to bring about educational change usually exceeds people's understanding of how to do so effectively.
