Book Helping Children Learn Mathematics

Download or read book Helping Children Learn Mathematics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from national and international assessments indicate that school children in the United States are not learning mathematics well enough. Many students cannot correctly apply computational algorithms to solve problems. Their understanding and use of decimals and fractions are especially weak. Indeed, helping all children succeed in mathematics is an imperative national goal. However, for our youth to succeed, we need to change how we’re teaching this discipline. Helping Children Learn Mathematics provides comprehensive and reliable information that will guide efforts to improve school mathematics from pre--kindergarten through eighth grade. The authors explain the five strands of mathematical proficiency and discuss the major changes that need to be made in mathematics instruction, instructional materials, assessments, teacher education, and the broader educational system and answers some of the frequently asked questions when it comes to mathematics instruction. The book concludes by providing recommended actions for parents and caregivers, teachers, administrators, and policy makers, stressing the importance that everyone work together to ensure a mathematically literate society.

Book Uncomplicating Algebra to Meet Common Core Standards in Math K 8

Download or read book Uncomplicating Algebra to Meet Common Core Standards in Math K 8 written by Marian Small and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2014-05-26 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second book in the Uncomplicating Mathematics Series, professional developer Marian Small shows teachers how to uncomplicate the teaching of algebra by focusing on the most important ideas that students need to grasp. Organized by grade level around the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, Small shares approaches that will lead to a deeper and richer understanding of algebra for both teachers and students. The book opens with a clear discussion of algebraic thinking and current requirements for algebraic understanding within standards-based learning environments. The book then launches with Kindergarten, where the first relevant standard is found in the operations and algebraic thinking domain, and ends with Grade 8, where the focus is on working with linear equations and functions. In each section the relevant standard is presented, followed by a discussion of important underlying ideas associated with that standard, as well as thoughtful, concept-based questions that can be used for classroom instruction, practice, or assessment. The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics challenges students to become mathematical thinkers, not just mathematical "doers." This resource will be invaluable for pre- and inservice teachers as they prepare themselves to understand and teach algebra with a deep level of understanding.

Download or read book Standards Driven Math written by Nathaniel Max Rock and published by Team Rock Press. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standards Driven MathT addresses the California Content Standards individually through this Student Standards HandbookT. Students can focus more directly on content standards for improved math success. In addition to standards being covered one-at-a-time, explanations of the meaning of each content standard are provided and appropriate problem sets are included. There is also a subject index by standard. Standards driven means that the standard is the driving force behind the content. No matter what textbook students are using, all will benefit from the direct standards approach of Standards Driven MathT. Every student should practice directly from a Student Standards HandbookT. Developed directly from one of the nation's most rigorous sets of state standards-California, this book is useful for spring standards test prep. No classroom should be without one for every student. Nathaniel Max Rock, an engineer by training, has taught math in middle school and high school including math classes: 7th Grade Math, Algebra I, Geometry I, Algebra II, Math Analysis and Calculus. Max has been documenting his math curricula since 2002 in various forms, some of which can be found on MathForEveryone.com, StandardsDrivenMath.com and MathIsEasySoEasy.com. Max is also an AVID elective teacher and the lead teacher for the Academy of Engineering at his high school.

Book The Analysis of Complex Nonlinear Mechanical Systems

Download or read book The Analysis of Complex Nonlinear Mechanical Systems written by Martin Lesser and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 1995-09-20 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers the fundamentals of the mechanics of multibody systems, i.e., systems of interconnected rigid bodies. A geometric view is emphasized in which the techniques and algorithms are motivated by the picture of the rigid body system as a point in the multidimensional space of all possible configurations. The reader is introduced to computer algebra methods in the form of a system, called Sophia, which is implemented in the Maple symbolic manipulation system. The first chapter provides a motivational introduction to the basic principles and an introduction to Maple. Kinematics based on the idea of tangent vectors to the configuration manifold sets the stage for dynamical analysis. The latter ranges from the Lagrange and Gibbs-Appell to Kane's equations. Coverage includes nonholonomic systems and redundant variable methods. The computer algebra methods included enable the treatment of nontrivial mechanical systems and the development of efficient numerical codes for simulation.

This book was released on 1991-12-11 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Nicholas N Govorun, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, was the principal organizer of the precedent meetings held at Dubna (1979, 1983, 1985). Unfortunately, he passed away in 1989. This volume is to honor his support in Computer Algebra. This is perhaps the only meeting of the entire soviet union computer algebra community and foreign scientists. The meeting presented scientific results, plans for research facilities, and status reports of the basic areas of investigations. The fields covered include computer algebra systems and general algorithms as well as applied algorithms, programs and results in computer algebra applications (mainly in physics).

Book Algebra in the Early Grades

Download or read book Algebra in the Early Grades written by James J. Kaput and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first to offer a comprehensive, research-based, multi-faceted look at issues in early algebra. In recent years, the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics has recommended that algebra become a strand flowing throughout the K-12 curriculum, and the 2003 RAND Mathematics Study Panel has recommended that algebra be “the initial topical choice for focused and coordinated research and development [in K-12 mathematics].” This book provides a rationale for a stronger and more sustained approach to algebra in school, as well as concrete examples of how algebraic reasoning may be developed in the early grades. It is organized around three themes: The Nature of Early Algebra Students’ Capacity for Algebraic Thinking Issues of Implementation: Taking Early Algebra to the Classrooms. The contributors to this landmark volume have been at the forefront of an effort to integrate algebra into the existing early grades mathematics curriculum. They include scholars who have been developing the conceptual foundations for such changes as well as researchers and developers who have led empirical investigations in school settings. Algebra in the Early Grades aims to bridge the worlds of research, practice, design, and theory for educators, researchers, students, policy makers, and curriculum developers in mathematics education.
