Book Stamp Taxes in Nevada 1863 1873 IV Chronological Geographic Analysis Ghosts of the Glory Trail

Download or read book Stamp Taxes in Nevada 1863 1873 IV Chronological Geographic Analysis Ghosts of the Glory Trail written by Michael Mahler and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph traces the chronological and geographical progression of revenue stamp usage in Nevada during its classic period of fiscal history: *from arrival of U.S. Civil War revenues in Nevada Territory in March 1863; *through imposition of state stamp taxes in 1865; *until expiration of virtually all stamp taxes in February 1873. This treatment mirrors the nine mining rushes, moving progressively eastward, by which Nevada was settled. The first of these, the frenetic "rush to Washoe," began in 1859 after rich silver strikes on the Comstock Lode in western Utah Territory. It would have momentous local, national and international implications, and trigger rapid transformation of a barren wilderness into a new state. The extraordinary intertwining of history, geography and philately unique to Nevada revenue-stamped documents is herein explained and illustrated for the first time. Philatelic treatment of this material has largely ignored its historic import, while alternative sources have generally minimized its philatelic significance. This exposition is undeniably complex, but with a simple underlying thread: miners and their followers went everywhere there was silver! The many promising strikes and subsequent settlements comprise the "glory trail" of the subtitle here, the term an homage to Nell Murbarger, whose Ghosts of the Glory Trail (1956) and Sovereigns of the Sage (1958) were instrumental in bringing Nevada ghost towns into the public eye. In these far-flung settlements the U.S. and Nevada tax schedules required revenue stamps -- often both federal and state -- on virtually every document. Most towns were short-lived, many extremely so, becoming "ghosts of the glory trail." Amazingly and thankfully, revenue-stamped documents have survived from a surprising number, often the only physical evidence that these places even existed. To facilitate understanding and appreciation of this approach, three earlier monographs explain separate components. I. Silver Fever! Nevada Territory Stock Certificates, 1863-4 is a detailed look at stock certificates issued and stamped in Nevada during the feverish speculation in mining stocks, triggered by rich strikes on the Comstock Lode, that swept the Territory from late 1862 to mid-1864. These are the most plentiful and visible components of the vanguard of revenue stamp usage in Nevada ― that of federal stamps created to pay the Civil War taxes mandated in 1862. II. Adhesive Revenue Stamps of Nevada, 1865-1873 characterizes the tax stamps created by the new state. And III. An Illustrated Census of Documents Bearing Nevada State Revenue Stamps, 1865-1873, by Type and Tax Rate is a compendium listing all documents bearing the state stamps recorded over four decades of monitoring collections, dealer offerings and auction catalogs, arranged according to the usual framework of fiscal history, by document type and tax rate. With all this groundwork accomplished, the present volume rearranges this material into what, for aficionados of Nevada's momentous early history, is the most natural, informative and interesting framework: by geography and chronology, radiating in time and place from the Comstock. These precious survivors from the early years of statehood, taken together, are an important primary source in piecing together the history of the state. Book Stamp Taxes in Nevada II Adhesive Revenue Stamps of Nevada 1865 1873

Download or read book Stamp Taxes in Nevada II Adhesive Revenue Stamps of Nevada 1865 1873 written by Michael Mahler and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is the result of efforts to revise the listings of Nevada's classic 1865-73 issues in the State Revenue Society's 2007 State Revenue Stamps Catalog. A preliminary version was the basis for the extensively revised listings in the Society's 2013 State Revenue Catalog. Previous efforts to characterize these stamps foundered on two obstacles: First, measuring the gauge of rouletted stamps is difficult and often impossible using the traditional perforation gauge and magnifying glass. This problem has been completely surmounted here using a computer-based method. Second, even when a given stamp has been properly identified, determining the duration of its use has been handicapped by a paucity of material in the hands of the analysts; collectors have been understandably reluctant to accumulate the hundreds of duplicates necessary for this task. This obstacle is circumvented here by two mechanisms. The stamps on which the anaysis was primarily based were not loose, but affixed to hundreds of revenue-stamped documents, assembled over four decades with an eye not only for their stamps, but also the document types and tax rates, origins, users -- in short, every aspect that makes a document collectable. Thus for example, many receipts bearing the same 2¢ stamp had been added with no sense of duplication, as they were all from different companies, for different sorts of goods, some with unusual layouts, illustrations, imprints, and so on. A side benefit of using on-document stamps is that the date of use is always evident, even when when missing from the cancel, as is often the case. The second useful mechanism is another byproduct of the computer age: the greatly increased ease of communication with fellow collectors, who added key off-document stamps to the database via scanning and email. The proposed listings comprise the final chapter here (pp. 139-142) and are previewed on p. 4.

Book Creating the Philatelic Exhibit Synopsis

Download or read book Creating the Philatelic Exhibit Synopsis written by Andrew McFarlane and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The philatelic synopsis is the short document given to the philatelic judges in advance of a stamp show to help them prepare to judge the exhibit. This often misunderstood and underrated document can dramatically shape how an exhibit is received by the judges and can have a big effect on an exhibitor's medal level. This e book describes, with full color examples, how to provide judges with what Andrew calls a "guided tour": an in-depth description of the exhibit, section by section, giving the judges an understanding of the exhibit and how the pieces fit together. While the content of an exhibit and its synopsis are what matters the most, how that information is presented to the viewer can be is just as critical. It helps to think of "presentation" not just in the visual sense, but also how the overall message is conveyed. Andrew McFarlane is one of the most skilled practitioners in the preparation of synopsis documents in the US philatelic exhibiting community. This book is a must have for philatelic exhibitors.

Book Who Rules America Now

Download or read book Who Rules America Now written by G. William Domhoff and published by Touchstone. This book was released on 1986 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author is convinced that there is a ruling class in America today. He examines the American power structure as it has developed in the 1980s. He presents systematic, empirical evidence that a fixed group of privileged people dominates the American economy and government. The book demonstrates that an upper class comprising only one-half of one percent of the population occupies key positions within the corporate community. It shows how leaders within this "power elite" reach government and dominate it through processes of special-interest lobbying, policy planning and candidate selection. It is written not to promote any political ideology, but to analyze our society with accuracy.
