Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three powerful Norman lords and a dispossessed Saxon thegn watch their steeds race close to the forest of Woodstock, each lusting for a win. But the first horse past the post has an empty saddle and his rider is lying in a copse with a knife in his back. Ralph Delchard and Gervase Bret, Domesday commissioners on behalf of the King, are guests of the Sheriff of Oxford while they settle a land dispute. But soon their attentions are focused on a stretch of grass outside Woodstock where a murderer's secrets are to be found. The solution will not be easy; from the powerful lords with their dynastic ties, to the downtrodden Saxons, living beneath the heavy Norman yoke, Oxfordshire is teeming with malice, hatred and struggles for power. More than one man has reason to wise the rider of the black stallion unseated from his horse. But who would go so far as murder?

Book Tales from the Sea Horse A Nostalgic History of Woodstock and Its Unique Spirit

Download or read book Tales from the Sea Horse A Nostalgic History of Woodstock and Its Unique Spirit written by Dr Wallace Sife and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wallace Sife captures an era in this famous art colony's history, from beatniks to hippies, from the 1940s through the mid 60s. That includes local gatherings that led directly to the Woodstock Festival of 1969, the "big bang" that echoed around the world as the largest gathering for peace or music, ever. "Tales from the Sea Horse" is a thrilling, coming of age, autobiographical memoir prefaced by a beautifully encapsulated history of the town. Nathan Koenig, President of the Woodstock Museum In 1946, when he was a teenager Wallace Sife's family bought a half-finished house near Zena, just outside of Woodstock. It was there that he first learned the rudiments of building and wiring houses. His brother used to drive him into town, to the Sea Horse, where he met "bohemians," artists and "wannabes" of all kinds - and for the next few years he went through his "rites of passage" into manhood. He also bicycled 6 miles into town, but upon turning 17 he received his driver's license, and bought his first car - a Model T Ford. Surprisingly, it was the only one in town, and everyone knew it and him. The house in Zena was his family's summer home, and he also spent the rest of each year frequenting many of the old hangouts of artists and aspiring young musicians, in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. Most of the friends he made there also used to go up to Woodstock and the Sea Horse in the summers. They referred to the town as "Greenwich Village with lots of land and trees." A few years later he was drafted and shipped to Korea as a combat infantryman, where he was wounded and then sent back to the line. After being discharged, he returned to his beloved Woodstock and Sea Horse with a different perspective on things. All the tales and accounts related here are factual, except for some name changes. The Sea Horse was funky, and a few of the regulars there were a bit "far out," but he loved it all - as this book now so clearly demonstrates. In 1963 he and his brother built the Sled Hill Cafe which led a brief but colorful existence."

Book Southern Hoofprints

Download or read book Southern Hoofprints written by Garry Allison and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One-part lively oral history, one-part meticulously researched encyclopaedia, and one-part wild ride, Southern Hoofprints colorfully conveys the story of horse racing in Southern Alberta. And in so doing, it also becomes a fascinating history of the region itself, from the late 1880s through to the present day. From racing’s rough, Wild West beginnings to the vast grandstands of modern times, this regional history of the Sport of Kings has been deeply researched and is delivered in a unique and engaging fashion. With wry humour and occasional pulse-throbbing drama, the reader is treated to an intimate perspective on family traditions of husband and wife owners, the dynasties of multi-generational riders, the spectators, and even the horses themselves. The chronicle of the rise of women riders from the trivialized ‘powder puff’ races to becoming power players on the track, and that of the First Nations people from the early days through to today, make this a completely inclusive history. It tells a distinctly Canadian story and its focus on the Southern Alberta region allows it to paint the picture in vivid detail. With its historical data enriched and enlivened through the human dimension of the oral histories, Southern Hoofprints entertainingly recounts horse-racing’s triumphs, tragedies, and continual reinvention.
