Book excerpt: As a vibrant area of computer science which continues to develop rapidly, AI is a field in which fresh ideas and new perspectives are of particular interest. This book presents the proceedings of the 8th European Starting AI Researcher Symposium (STAIRS 2016), held as a satellite event of the 22nd European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI) in The Hague, the Netherlands, in August 2016. What is unique about the STAIRS symposium is that the principal author of every submitted paper must be a young researcher who either does not yet hold a Ph.D., or who has obtained their Ph.D. during the year before the submission deadline for papers. The book contains 21 accepted papers; Part I includes the 11 long papers which were presented orally at the symposium, and Part II the remaining long and short papers presented in poster sessions. These papers cover the entire field of AI, with social intelligence and socio-cognitive systems, machine learning and data mining, autonomous agents and multiagent systems, being the areas which attracted the largest number of submissions. There is a good balance between foundational issues and AI applications, and the problems tackled range widely from classical AI themes such as planning and scheduling or natural language processing, to questions related to decision theory and games, as well as to other newly emerging areas. Providing a tantalizing glimpse of the work of AI researchers of the future, the book will be of interest to all those wishing to keep abreast of this exciting and fascinating field.

Work started at 5.30am and went on until after dark. Yet from the gentleman with a penchant for stroking the housemaids' curlers, to the heartbreaking story of Agnes the pregnant under-parlourmaid, fired for being seduced by her mistress' nephew, Margaret's tales of her time in service are told with wit, warmth, and a sharp eye for the prejudices of her situation.

The varied textures and contemporary appeal of Industrial Botanicals give it a modern edge, combining polished concrete, rusted metal, and laboratory glass with peeling paint and vintage science posters. Next, Natural Botanicals is based around antique prints and museum specimen cases for a nostalgic feel while Tropical Botanicals features bold leafy motifs, cacti, and palm trees for a glamorous retro flavor. Throughout the book, Selina’s DIY Makes and Style Tips provide a wealth of suggestions for how to recreate the textures, tones, and ambience of botanical style at home.

Book excerpt: An atmospheric and intrigue-filled novel of dead gods, buried histories, and a mysterious, protean city--from one of America's most acclaimed young fantasy writers. The city of Bulikov once wielded the powers of the gods to conquer the world, enslaving and brutalizing millions—until its divine protectors were killed. Now Bulikov has become just another colonial outpost of the world's new geopolitical power, but the surreal landscape of the city itself—first shaped, now shattered, by the thousands of miracles its guardians once worked upon it—stands as a constant, haunting reminder of its former supremacy. Into this broken city steps Shara Thivani. Officially, the unassuming young woman is just another junior diplomat sent by Bulikov's oppressors. Unofficially, she is one of her country's most accomplished spies, dispatched to catch a murderer. But as Shara pursues the killer, she starts to suspect that the beings who ruled this terrible place may not be as dead as they seem—and that Bulikov's cruel reign may not yet be over.
