Book Physical and Computational Aspects of Convective Heat Transfer

Download or read book Physical and Computational Aspects of Convective Heat Transfer written by T. Cebeci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with the transport of thermal energy in flows of practical significance. The temperature distributions which result from convective heat transfer, in contrast to those associated with radiation heat transfer and conduction in solids, are related to velocity characteristics and we have included sufficient information of momentum transfer to make the book self-contained. This is readily achieved because of the close relation ship between the equations which represent conservation of momentum and energy: it is very desirable since convective heat transfer involves flows with large temperature differences, where the equations are coupled through an equation of state, as well as flows with small temperature differences where the energy equation is dependent on the momentum equation but the momentum equation is assumed independent of the energy equation. The equations which represent the conservation of scalar properties, including thermal energy, species concentration and particle number density can be identical in form and solutions obtained in terms of one dependent variable can represent those of another. Thus, although the discussion and arguments of this book are expressed in terms of heat transfer, they are relevant to problems of mass and particle transport. Care is required, however, in making use of these analogies since, for example, identical boundary conditions are not usually achieved in practice and mass transfer can involve more than one dependent variable.

Book Blunt body Stagnation region Flow with Nongray Radiation Heat Transfer

Download or read book Blunt body Stagnation region Flow with Nongray Radiation Heat Transfer written by Walter B. Olstad and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A singular perturbation solution to the blunt-body stagnation-region flow of an inviscid, radiating gas has been obtained by means of the Poincař-Lighthill-Kuo, or perturbation-of-coordinates, method. A number of results for a gray gas have been presented in order to provide some physical insight into the effects of various parameters on the shock-layer enthalpy profiles and the radiant heat-transfer rates. A nongray absorption-coefficient model was developed which includes, in an approximate way, the important vacuum-ultraviolet contributions of bound-free and line transitions. This model was used to obtain solutions pertinent to the case of reentry into the earth's atmosphere. While the results are restricted to small values of the radiation cooling parameter, which characterizes the relative importance of radiation and convection as energy-transport mechanisms, they cover broad ranges of vehicle velocity, altitude, and nose radius, which are of practical interest. The characteristic enthalpy variation of the model absorption coefficient was found to be nearly independent of altitude and nose radius for fixed vehicle velocity except for velocities lower than 10.67 km/sec. Thus it was possible to correlate certain quantities by plotting these quantities as functions of the nondimensional adiabatic radiant heat-transfer rate for various altitudes and nose radii at fixed vehicle velocity. Among the quantities correlated was the cooling factor (the ratio of the stagnation-point radiant heat-transfer rate to the adiabatic radiant heat-transfer rate). The cooling-factor correlation is particularly useful because it eliminates the need to perform nonadiabatic calculations whenever radiant heat-transfer rates are desired. Also correlated was the factor by which the convective heat-transfer rate is reduced because of radiation losses in the shock layer. Finally, upper-bound estimates were made of the effects of absorption of precursor radiation by the free-stream air on the radiant and convective heat-transfer rates.

This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of fluid flow and heat transfer in a porous medium have been the subject of continuous interest for the past several decades because of the wide range of applications, such as geothermal systems, drying technologies, production of thermal isolators, control of pollutant spread in groundwater, insulation of buildings, solar power collectors, design of nuclear reactors, and compact heat exchangers, etc. There are several models for simulating porous media such as the Darcy model, Non-Darcy model, and non-equilibrium model. In porous media applications, such as the environmental impact of buried nuclear heat-generating waste, chemical reactors, thermal energy transport/storage systems, the cooling of electronic devices, etc., a temperature discrepancy between the solid matrix and the saturating fluid has been observed and recognized.

Book Micropolar Fluids

Download or read book Micropolar Fluids written by Grzegorz Lukaszewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micropolar fluids are fluids with microstructure. They belong to a class of fluids with nonsymmetric stress tensor that we shall call polar fluids, and include, as a special case, the well-established Navier-Stokes model of classical fluids that we shall call ordinary fluids. Physically, micropolar fluids may represent fluids consisting of rigid, randomly oriented (or spherical) particles suspended in a viscous medium, where the deformation of fluid particles is ignored. The model of micropolar fluids introduced in [65] by C. A. Eringen is worth studying as a very well balanced one. First, it is a well-founded and significant generalization of the classical Navier-Stokes model, covering, both in theory and applications, many more phenomena than the classical one. Moreover, it is elegant and not too complicated, in other words, man ageable to both mathematicians who study its theory and physicists and engineers who apply it. The main aim of this book is to present the theory of micropolar fluids, in particular its mathematical theory, to a wide range of readers. The book also presents two applications of micropolar fluids, one in the theory of lubrication and the other in the theory of porous media, as well as several exact solutions of particular problems and a numerical method. We took pains to make the presentation both clear and uniform.

Book Differential Quadrature and Its Application in Engineering

Download or read book Differential Quadrature and Its Application in Engineering written by Chang Shu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years, the differential quadrature method has been applied extensively in engineering. This book, aimed primarily at practising engineers, scientists and graduate students, gives a systematic description of the mathematical fundamentals of differential quadrature and its detailed implementation in solving Helmholtz problems and problems of flow, structure and vibration. Differential quadrature provides a global approach to numerical discretization, which approximates the derivatives by a linear weighted sum of all the functional values in the whole domain. Following the analysis of function approximation and the analysis of a linear vector space, it is shown in the book that the weighting coefficients of the polynomial-based, Fourier expansion-based, and exponential-based differential quadrature methods can be computed explicitly. It is also demonstrated that the polynomial-based differential quadrature method is equivalent to the highest-order finite difference scheme. Furthermore, the relationship between differential quadrature and conventional spectral collocation is analysed. The book contains material on: - Linear Vector Space Analysis and the Approximation of a Function; - Polynomial-, Fourier Expansion- and Exponential-based Differential Quadrature; - Differential Quadrature Weighting Coefficient Matrices; - Solution of Differential Quadrature-resultant Equations; - The Solution of Incompressible Navier-Stokes and Helmholtz Equations; - Structural and Vibrational Analysis Applications; - Generalized Integral Quadrature and its Application in the Solution of Boundary Layer Equations. Three FORTRAN programs for simulation of driven cavity flow, vibration analysis of plate and Helmholtz eigenvalue problems respectively, are appended. These sample programs should give the reader a better understanding of differential quadrature and can easily be modified to solve the readers own engineering problems.

Book Solutions of Blunt body Stagnation region Flows with Nongray Emission and Absorption of Radiation by a Time asymptotic Technique

Download or read book Solutions of Blunt body Stagnation region Flows with Nongray Emission and Absorption of Radiation by a Time asymptotic Technique written by Linwood B. Callis and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A second-order time-asymptotic solution to radiation-coupled stagnation-region flows is presented. The solution is applied to the hypervelocity flow over blunt vehicles of inviscid, nonconducting, equilibrium air, emitting and absorbing nongray radiation. Velocities, nose radii, and altitudes covered by the analysis are sufficient to bracket reentry trajectories of current interest. Radiative heat-transfer rates for the range of interest and typical profiles of pressure, density, enthalpy, temperature, and velocity are shown. The nature of time-asymptotic solution is discussed and it is shown o be a feasible means of achieving second-order accurate solutions to radiation-coupled shock-layer flows. Step-function models of the absorption coefficient are used in order to evaluate the divergence of the radiation flux vector. An analysis is carried out to determine what effect variations in the spectral complexity of the step model absorption coefficients used in the analysis will have on the thermodynamic and flow profiles of interest and on the nongray radiative heat-transfer rates. In this connection use is made of consistent model absorption coefficients having one to nine spectral steps with free-free, free-bound (including atomic line transitions), and molecular transitions taken into account. Relatively simple models of the absorption coefficient can be used with no significant loss of accuracy. An existing correlation for the cooling factor, the ratio of the radiation heat-transfer rate to the adiabatic radiation heat-transfer rate, is extended to larger velocities than heretofore considered.

Book Gaseous Radiation in Hypersonic Stagnation Point Flow

Download or read book Gaseous Radiation in Hypersonic Stagnation Point Flow written by Imants Reba and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of gaseous radiation in shock tube flows can be used to predict the radiant heat transfer to an actual re-entry vehicle if the flow is in equilibrium and the actual tempera tures and densities are duplicated. A scheme which enables determination of flow regimes where non-equilibrium effects become important is discussed. Reported also are results of spectral radiation measurements for flow regimes in which equilibrium exists. These measurements cover the spectral range from 3800 A to 6300 A. Experi ments were performed using 3/8 and 3/4-in diam eter hemisphere cylinders. Light radiating from the bow shock region was collected by a light tube extending to the stagnation point of the model. As evidenced by the tests results, this technique yields good reproducibility of data. It constitutes a direct measurement of radiant light flux at the stagnation point, which is not masked by the impurity radiation encountered if measurements are made through a window in the shock tube wall. Download or read book Solving ODEs with MATLAB written by Lawrence F. Shampine and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-28 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise text, first published in 2003, is for a one-semester course for upper-level undergraduates and beginning graduate students in engineering, science, and mathematics, and can also serve as a quick reference for professionals. The major topics in ordinary differential equations, initial value problems, boundary value problems, and delay differential equations, are usually taught in three separate semester-long courses. This single book provides a sound treatment of all three in fewer than 300 pages. Each chapter begins with a discussion of the 'facts of life' for the problem, mainly by means of examples. Numerical methods for the problem are then developed, but only those methods most widely used. The treatment of each method is brief and technical issues are minimized, but all the issues important in practice and for understanding the codes are discussed. The last part of each chapter is a tutorial that shows how to solve problems by means of small, but realistic, examples.

Book Stagnation Point Boundary Layer with Large Wall to freestream Enthalpy Ratio

Download or read book Stagnation Point Boundary Layer with Large Wall to freestream Enthalpy Ratio written by Harold Mirels and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of large surface-to-freestream enthalpy ratios on stagnation point shear and heat transfer is investigated for two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies. Numerical solutions are obtained for a wide range of enthalpy ratios and wall transpiration rates. Absorption of externally imposed thermal radiation by the transpired gas is included for cases where the absorption is small compared to thermal conduction. It is found that the pressure gradient causes large velocity overshoot in the boundary layer. In the limit of infinite enthalpy ratio. the peak velocity in the boundary layer is approximately 4/9 or 1/3 that value that would occur at the wall for an inviscid two-dimensional or axisymmetric flow, respectively, with the same temperature ratio. The application of the numerical results to 'cold flow plus radiation' nose-tip test facilities is also noted. (Author).

Book Fundamentals of Gas Particle Flow

Download or read book Fundamentals of Gas Particle Flow written by G Rudinger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Gas-Particle Flow is an edited, updated, and expanded version of a number of lectures presented on the “Gas-Solid Suspensions course organized by the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics. Materials presented in this book are mostly analytical in nature, but some experimental techniques are included. The book focuses on relaxation processes, including the viscous drag of single particles, drag in gas-particles flow, gas-particle heat transfer, equilibrium, and frozen flow. It also discusses the dynamics of single particles, such as particles in an arbitrary flow, in a rotating gas, in a Prandtl-Meyer expansion, and in an oscillating flow. The remaining chapters of the book deal with the thermodynamics of gas-particle mixtures, steady flow through ducts, pressure waves, gas-particle jets, boundary layer, and momentum transfer. The experimental techniques included in this book present the powder feeders, the instrumentation on particle flow rate, velocity, concentration and temperature, and the measurement of the particle drag coefficient in a shock tube.
