Book A Phase I Archaeological Survey of Portions of Godman Airfield on the Fort Knox Military Reservation Hardin and Meade Counties Kentucky

Download or read book A Phase I Archaeological Survey of Portions of Godman Airfield on the Fort Knox Military Reservation Hardin and Meade Counties Kentucky written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1996, Fort Knox contract archaeologists conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of portions of Godman Airfield, Fort Knox, Hardin and Meade Counties, Kentucky. This survey was not performed in association with a specific undertaking, but took advantage of improved field conditions. The area surveyed encompasses approximately 32.6 ha (80.4 acres). The survey resulted in the recording of two archaeological sites, 15Hd521 and 15Hd522, lithic scatters of indeterminate prehistoric cultural-temporal affiliation with minor amounts of late nineteenth-early twentieth century historic materials. Site 1SHd522 is not eligible for the National Register due to previous disturbance and a small assemblage. No further archaeological investigation is recommended for 15Hd522. Site 15Hd521 is potentially eligible for the National Register because conditions were not conducive to proper assessment. Additional testing should be conducted at 15Hd521 prior to any future undertakings which might affect the site. It is recommended that all sections of the airfield bounded on all sides by runways may be assumed to be too disturbed to warrant survey for archaeological sites. It is also recommended that the unsurveyed portions of the airfield which cannot be assumed to be previously disturbed should be surveyed for cultural resources prior to future earthmoving activities.

Download or read book A Phase I Archaeological Survey of 1996 Rehab Areas 12 17 in Training Areas 3 and 6 Fort Knox Hardin County Kentucky written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May-July 1996, Fort Knox contract archaeologists conducted a Phase I survey of 37.34 ha (92.26 acres) in Training Areas 3 and 6, Fort Knox, Hardin County, Kentucky, in advance of soil rehabilitation. The survey recorded 15Hd528-15Hd535 and five isolated finds. Sites 15Hd528, l5Hd53O, 15Hd532, 15Hd533, and isolated finds TA3-IFl and TA6-IF2 through TA6-IF4 have indeterminate prehistoric components. Sites 15Hd529 and 15Hd531 have Late Archaic-Early Woodland components, and 15Hd534 has Late Archaic and Late Woodland-Mississippian components. TA6-IF1 is an unidentified Middle-Late Archaic projectile point. Site 15Hd535 is a late nineteenth-early twentieth century historic site. Sites 15Hd528-15Hd530 and 15Hd532-15Hd535 and the isolated finds are not eligible for the National Register, and no further archaeological investigation is recommended for them. Site 15Hd531 is potentially eligible for the National Register due to the presence of intact topsoil over much of the site and conditions not conducive to a complete evaluation of the site. The tank trail passing through 15Hd531 is eroded well into subsoil, so grading it will not affect intact areas of the site. It is recommended that archaeologists monitor tree planting in the 15Hd531 vicinity, examining soil profiles and screening the soil prior to backfilling of the tree root holes.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Phase I archaeological study was conducted of two areas, totalling 121 ha (299 acres), scheduled for rehabilitation on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, Meade county, Kentucky. The survey, conducted from April-August 1994, recorded 30 sites (15Md347-15Md376), and 10 prehistoric isolated finds. The sites include Early Archaic through Middle Woodland components, plus prehistoric sites of indeterminate affiliation, and mid nineteenth to mid twentieth century historic sites. Sites 15Md347, 15Md348, 15Md350, 15Md352-15Md374, 15Md376, and the isolated finds are not eligible for the National Register. No additional archaeological investigations are recommended for these sites and isolated finds. Sites 15Md349 (Late Archaic), 15Md351 (Late Archaic), and 15Md375 (Early Archaic and Middle Woodland) are open habitation sites. They are considered potentially eligible for the National Register, because of the possibility of intact cultural deposits and/or the possibility of identifiable activity areas on the site surface. Additional archaeological investigations are recommended for 15Md349, 15Md351, and 15Md375. These investigations should be integrated into and coordinated with the rehab activities.

Book excerpt: In April 1996, the Fort Knox contract archaeology staff conducted a phase I survey of three proposed borrow areas on Cedar Creek Range, Hardin County, Kentucky. The borrow areas encompass 4.0 ha (10 acres). Four sites were recorded in the survey. Site 15Hd523, in Borrow Area 1, and 15Hd526, in Borrow Area 3, are lithic scatters of indeterminate prehistoric affiliation. Site 15Hd524 in Borrow Area 1 and 15Hd525 near Borrow Area 1 are nineteenth or twentieth century historic sites. Due to previous disturbance, 15HdS23, 15Hd52S, and 15Hd526 are not eligible for the National Register, and no further archaeological investigation is recommended for them. Site 15Hd524 is potentially eligible for the National Register. it should be avoided, because of its archaeological potential and proximity to a creek. If 15Hd524 cannot be avoided, additional archaeological research must be conducted prior to borrowing activities to assess more fully its National Register status. If 15Hd524 is avoided or impacts mitigated through additional archaeological research, then it is recommended that the borrowing be conducted as proposed. Cedar Creek Cemetery is near Borrow Area 3. The cemetery is bermed and fenced. No impact to the cemetery is expected due to the proposed borrowing activities.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1994, the Fort Knox cultural resource management staff conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of 13.2 ha (32.5 acres) for the proposed Wilcox Range upland urban area, observation tower, and access road on Fort Knox, Bullitt County, Kentucky. The survey recorded 15Bu528 plus one isolate and revisited 15Bu489. Previously recorded 15Bu488 could not be relocated and is presumed destroyed. 15Bu486, in the project area and previously determined to be not eligible for the National Register, was not revisited. 15Bu488, 15Bu488, and 15Bu528 (late nineteenth-mid twentieth century historic sites) and the prehistoric isolate are not eligible for the National Register, and require no additional archaeological work. 15Bu489 is a prehistoric lithic scatter of indeterminate cultural-temporal affiliation. Only the portion of 15Bu489 in the access road improvements corridor was inspected and was determined to be severely disturbed. No additional work is recommended for 15Bu489 in conjunction with the proposed Wilcox Range access road improvements, but expansion north of the existing road would require further testing of 15Bu489. It is recommended that the upland urban area, observation tower, and access road be constructed as proposed. The proposed lowland Wilcox Range improvements area must be surveyed for cultural resources as a separate project.

The proposed timber harvest area is approximately 122 m (400 feet) wide and 25 m (80 feet) long, encompassing approximately 0.30 ha (0.74 acres). Only selected trees will be harvested. The total area surveyed is 580 m long and 325 m wide, encompassing approximately 6.7 ha (16.5 acres). The survey resulted in the discovery of one archaeological site, outside the proposed timber harvest area. Site 15Hd498 is a small lithic scatter, which is considered potentially eligible for the National Register in part due to field conditions not conducive to the adequate investigation of its horizontal or vertical extent. Since 15Hd498 lies completely outside the proposed timber area, it is recommended that the timber harvest be conducted as proposed.

Book A Phase I Archaeological Survey of the Proposed Training Area 11 Timber Harvest and Adjacent Areas on the Fort Knox Military Reservation Hardin and Meade Counties Kentucky

Download or read book A Phase I Archaeological Survey of the Proposed Training Area 11 Timber Harvest and Adjacent Areas on the Fort Knox Military Reservation Hardin and Meade Counties Kentucky written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From June-October, 1995, Fort Knox contract archaeologists conducted a Phase I survey of the proposed Training Area 11 timber harvest tract and adjoining areas on the Fort Knox Military Reservation, Hardin and Meade Counties, Kentucky. The timber tract encompasses approximately 15.3 ha (37.5 acres). An additional adjacent 5.9 ha (14.7 acres) also were surveyed. The survey recorded three historic archaeological sites, 15Hd502-15Hd504, and the recovery of a prehistoric isolated find. Isolated finds are not eligible for the National Register. Site 15Hd504, the isolated find, and a portion of 15Hd503 lie outside the proposed timber tract. The historic sites have an end date of 1919 and are considered potentially eligible for the National Register due to the presence of intact cultural deposits. Sites 15Hd502 and 15Hd504 are also potentially eligible because of their association with individuals of local, and possibly state and national, significance. Because the timber harvest is being conducted to improve airfield safety, site avoidance is not feasible. It is recommended that the timber harvest be conducted as proposed except that heavy machinery use on sites be minimized and that archaeologists be present during the logging of site areas to assist in the avoidance of damage.
